It probably wouldn't end up being that big a loss since he could get an opt out in the contract and then a max extension. No doubt, it's still a loss and a financial risk.Especially when your not 100% sure it will result in a championship. I mean 2 players on the same team, that play the same position, both hold the ball, and miamis real problem is the lack of depth, not melo.
Alternatively, the Heat could jettison Bosh and/or less likely Wade OR offer one or the other or both less than the max. Surely, Wade is NOT a max player anymore and the way Bosh is playing in these finals he doesn't deserve it either. I wonder if the Spurs demolition of the Heat gives Riles the bargaining power he needs to offer them less thereby gaining the little bit of flexibility
needed to sign Melo or Love or whoever.
It still would leave them with no depth, youth, or future. The Heat as consturcted can not hold up against a deep team. They look exactly how they did in the finals against DALLAS, and 1 player won't cure there issues.
So know they want everybody to opt out so they could make room for another max player, and exactly where are you going to find 6 other worthy players to play for a million bucks..Your gonna get washed up players like Oden and Bynum
Only thing going for Miami is that there is absolutely no team in the east with talent and that's what it comes to. There are no challengers, it's Miami by default.

if you've read any of my posts, which clearl you haven't, i am not a melo-lover whatsoever, but im also not a petty child behind the keyboard and realize that melo is talented and we need him here OR we need to get something for him if he leaves. go back under your rock at realgm.
Funny, how tkf calls other butthurt and emotional and he spews out more emotion over Melo than most Homers on here could in their wildest 62 point wet dreams.
He's not emotional, he just hates Melo.
He's a Knick fan, he just doesn't watch them much.
What about the possibility of this Big Four, should the Heat flame out in 5 games:
Melo stays
Lebron comes here
Love signs here because he's honestly sick of not even making the playoffs
Durant comes here to be with his friend Derek and leave the Westkook far behind.
Keep FluTyson. Who needs a PG? Melo can finally play the 3 and rest his shoulder.
Our bench is then filled with mass filthiness, and role players for quality minutes.
Philip, make this happen please!

Thanks. Miami would be a really exciting team to watch with those 4. I hope we do the sign and trade option and get lots of picks while keeping 2015 cap room.

Is Pat Reilly cold blooded enough to do to Wade what the Lakers couldn't do to Kobe? The Heat needs to tell Wade to take considerably less or move on. The Heat need depth and real point guard help. Cole is nice but he's a backup. Chalmers is just too mediocre to rely on. Battier is on his last legs and the heat need to replace Hus three point shooting and wing defense. Is Sugar Ray even coming back? That's another hole the heat might have to fill. They can't address those issues if they're overpaying Wade.

Pat the Rat is a cold blooded snake. The way he treats Wade will have an effect on how he will treat Bosh and LeBron an it will resonate with them in a negative way.

They listed like 5 players in the article that Miami would send (in addition to many picks) after being re-signed

Bonn, Mario Chalmers, Shane Battier, Toney Douglas, James Jones, Michael Beasley and Greg Oden... those are the players listed that HAVE to have 1 year guarantees coming back to NY.
These are the players you want on the Knicks next year for Melo? Maybe Chalmers and Jones have some sort of value.
What picks do Miami have that would make this worth while to the Knicks?

Exactly, these are the same players that have been a complete no show in most of this yrs playoffs, and have been all but invisible in the finals.
They have no trade chips that Phil would even remotely be interested in. Even if you have 4 top guys on your team at 15 mil per, your going to have to fill the rest of your roster with pure trash.
If wade goes down, I dont see how you balance out this roster especially with 3 of your top players playing (bosh, melo and LBJ) basically the same position.
It's like having Curry, Irving and Kobe on the same team and having Camby and haslem as you bigs and a bunch of(35 yr olds) and 2nd round picks as you bench.
The East will get better, and the Heats window will be 2 yrs tops

Indy is vastly overrated, Washington is just learning to win, if you are looking 2-3 years into the future then I agree with you but as of now Miami still is the beast of the east. I don't really see them being challenged by any team in the east.

is it at all possible that since the "big 3" took less money last time, that riles promised a guy like wade maybe more than he's worth on his next contract to make up for it?

26 and 55, I know NKY wan't a pick badly in this draft, but don't see them helping out miami.
If the heat are smart, they will try to move up in the draft, and draft a 2g, and atleast get a tad bit younger, and have wade come off the bench..

WHAT IS so overrated about indy? they went to back to back ECF's and their best players are 22 and 23 years old? did you have them rated higher? vastly overrated? I mean come on man you act as if people had them as a finals shoe in and they finished with our record.... what they are now consistently proving is that they are clearly the second best team in the east behind miami and with a tweak here or there can surpass them.
washington, Atlanta, and the Hornets are all playoff teams, with picks, and youth and they are improving fast... orlando has a potential beast in oladipo and plenty of picks... it may not take 2-3 years for those teams to pose a threat.. miami is getting older, and it is showing a bit..
