+1 on all points. If they will include Parsons, great but it would be only so we could trade him. He's a nice player but he's about to be badly overpaid.
Melo for Lin, Parsons, 2 first round picks (which would prob be around 25 to 30), and returning our 2 second round picks (2014, 2015) would be reasonable. Those second round picks might be around 35. I'd love to get more but don't see it happening.
I would not be who to contain myself in excitement
Parsons at $10-12m is not overpaying. He is better than hallow who makes $10
You can still add free agents
You can't point out one guy with a higher salary to justify someone else's salary. It doesn't work that way. My guess is $10-12 mil per is lower than what Parson's wants - just a hunch from what I've read. I guess it wouldn't be bad to have the Bird's rights to Lin, Parsons, and Asik and decide to just keep whichever ones will sign at reasonable prices. I think you could try to extend each to reasonable salaries during the season.
Exactly if they play well
I've seen a lot of talk about guys' love for Chandler Parsons but I'm not a fan. I come from the Bonn school of though on this one and think that he is going to be grossly overpaid, which would negate his value. Let's be honest, the guy isn't much more than a 3rd or 4th option on a contender and that isn't adequate compensation for a guy like Melo anyway.
What we need is to move Melo to Chicago. I'd package him, Shumpert, Tyler and Aldrich to the Bulls for Boozer, Mirotic, Jimmy Butler, Jimmer Fredette as well as their 16th and 19th picks. The Bulls give up a lot but undoubtedly get the best player and get seismically better, while maintaining their middle level exception. That team would be the heir apparent behind the Heat in the Eastern Conference. From our prospective, we'd get 4 or 5 players that can form a solid supporting cast in 2 years that would be good enough to lure Durant to NYC.
We are not talking about paying parsons $20mil+
2nd/3rd options on good teams make anywhere from $10-20mil

We wouldn't be able to get Parsons because Houston declined his option making him a RFA. That means we would have to agree to a S&T and we can't receive S&T players because we're too far over the cap.
I thought we could still do sign and trades, we just had less leeway in getting the salaries to match?
This new cba is such a head f***!
Wouldn't we not be over the cap if we traded melo??
Even if we took back $0 salary in any Melo deal our cap number would still be $77M, about $13M over the projected cap for next year.
The salary cap is increasing by $5 million. That means that the luxury tax and apron should increase as well accordingly. $78 million should be the new threshold if all things remain consistent.
I know, I'm including the projected increase (which I thought was $6M) in account. Based off of this year's cap numbers, next year's salary cap, luxury tax, and luxury tax apron should be something along the lines of $64M, $77M, and $81M. Our cap figure next year with Melo is $90M and without is $77M.
Best case scenario on a melo trade boozer and 16+19 why? BECAUSE PJ can start hand pi king players while we keep salary cap flrxibilty for the future
If Melo left I would be more angry that the Knicks will suck again on NBA 2K. We were never going to win with Melo as the top guy making 30mil per year in real life. Knowing Melo's past I doubt if he was going to take less money and stay with us anyway. We all know Melo is all about his money. The funny thing is he will F us on the way in(Not sign in the offseason) and on the way out(Will just sign with another team). This is the norm for the Knicks. We always overpay for players and never get anything good for them when they leave.

Parsons is little more than Mike Dunleavy Jr with an opportunity. In fact, I think Dunleavy (a fav of mine) was the better player because he could do everything that Parsons is doing, plus run an offense as a point-forward. To be honest, I was being kind by suggesting that Parsons is even a guy that can consistently be the 3rd best player on a contender. Paying anything close to 8 figures for a guy like that is a bad investment especially if the team isn't in a position to win.

why would we take Boozer so easily? We need to use him as leverage. The Bulls owner is known for being extremely cheap. They would have to Amnesty Booz for them to have a shot at Melo without a sign and trade and we all know he does not want to give away free money. We should use his greed against him and fleece them for as much as we can. We should be trying to gut that team like denver gutted us.

Well said. This is why I'd be unwilling to take back any long term contracts in a deal for Melo. It's best to keep our payroll low and flexible. It'd also present us with an opportunity to finally develop some talent to build with/around. Out of curiosity, who are you looking at with the 16th and 19th picks?

Honestly, getting two 1st rounders in this year's loaded draft all at the expense of taking on one year of Boozer's contract IS fleecing them.

Exactly! Besides that point, Boozer could be a pretty good mentor for younger post players. I think people forget just how good this guy use to be in his prime and healthy. His post moves were beautiful to watch.

Do you think we could pull it off though?

I think so, it's a pretty reasonable trade for both sides. Also, if we were to go after Butler or Mirotic as well I wouldn't hesitate to include Hardaway; if they wanted Shumpert on top then I would start to reconsider.

The we need a resolution to the Kevin Love situation as soon as possible. The draft is coming up in a couple of weeks. I'd rather have Taj Gibson in any deal, but I can see why people would want Boozer's expiring.

I like Taj Gibson but the guy is already closing in on 29. I don't think that would be a good investment in lieu of picks/prospects, given our situation.
I'm ok with the Chicago deal but realize you are not getting a player better than Parsons & Lin with those picks
Most likely

Rose could use some help with the load offensively I think

I still want the picks, assuming Chicago makes good choices. Taj was signed to a good deal and should hold solid until the end of it. I just like the idea of getting back na solid starter and good defender at a good price. I guess Butler would fill a need at value price. Mirotic's right would not be bad. We could try to bring him over in 2015.

I like your thinking. Would prefer Asik instead of Parsons so that we can get rid of that headache Flu Tyson.
