For executives to leak trades that are about to happen with there club to media outlets. Like if a trade is almost completed most of the time its leaked before official. What benefit is there for the executive leaking it to leak it?
I always thought that it means the deal is done and paperwork has been submitted to the league for approval. I see the term 'in principal' used alot and take that to mean that if there is some technical reason the league will not approve the deal the teams involved will have to tweak it, but the major pieces are agreed to.
More favorable coverage from a network or a reporter.

I think it's done to get an idea of the fan bases reaction to the trade. Also, it's way for other interested clubs to get an idea of a player's value and decide if they want to come in with a better offer. I think it's also a way to counter the misinformation spread by rival GMs and to sucker other clubs into offering more in a trade package.
I don't think it's usually teams doing it officially. I think it's more lower level guys who get to talk to the press and feel important.
Of course, there are times that teams lead trades. In those cases I think BigDaddyG has it perfect.
