If we were to have *both* of the highest paid players in the world, and it wasn't for guys like Lebron, Paul, or Durant but rather Kobe and Melo - the trust would have to be busted.

i don't know...i feel like when you're talking about one of the best all around players in NBA history for a 2 yr window it's not that shortsighted. Especially when within those 2 yrs you don't really have the draft picks to be able to rebuild. We're not gonna rebuild with 3 yrs worth of 2nd round picks that we buy.

But Kobe at his age and in the next two years isn't worth what you could get in terms of other players?
I mean, would you rather have a very likely broken down Kobe for 2 years, or Kyle Lowry, Shaun Livingston, Marcin Gortat?
That is assuming you had Melo - you already have enough scoring. He needs help?
And I am not making any valuations on the three above - I think Gortat is overpaid, but he is a 7 footer and looked great in the play offs...
Lowry and Gortat signed for a higher combined value than Kobe's contract for a longer period of time. And I don't think the combination of the 2 gives you a better chance of winning the East than a 60% probability of a healthy Kobe. And I think all those guys all have a decent likelihood of having albatross contracts (up and down career track records).
Its a tough call- maybe on the surface it doesn't seem to make sense, but if you're going "all-in", a Kobe, Pau, Melo squad would seemingly give us the highest liklihood of contending with the resources we have.
I think I'd be singing a different tune if we had multiple first round picks to combine with cap space. Given our position I don't think a 2 yr commitment to Kobe is too unreasonable.

The only way Kobe and Melo would work IMO is if Phil were coaching. Anyone else and it would probably be a disaster.
