http://nypost.com/2014/07/03/source-kurt...Buried in Berman's article about Rambis taking the assistant job is this nugget:
Though the Knicks can’t budge until they get a commitment from Carmelo Anthony or Pau Gasol, the Knicks have inquired about New Orleans free-agent forward Jason Smith
This guy is a bit under the radar....been in the NBA a while, but he's 7 ft and has always put up good numbers and decent percentages, even in limited minutes. Certainly can score a little at his size.

Maybe someone we can grab in a sign and trade for the 3.6mm exemption?
Anyone remember watching him play?

Ha, I brought him, Ekpe Udoh and Gustavo Ayon up in another thread. All of them would be solid additions. Smith has a good midrange jumper. I'm guessing the pelicans don't think Smith is tough enough physically to pair with brow. It doesn't look like he's much of a rebounder either. Ayon might be my first choice out of the three.
He's a high energy guy. Lunch pail type player. He's can play and looks like he can do more but is a live body reserve. He does everything at his position just nothing very well. He would fit well in a platoon gig with Dalembert

I was thinking third big man, with STAT getting minutes behind Dalembert in smaller line ups. What do you think about Gustavo Ayon?

yea, he is a solid player.. energy, hardworking player.. not bad..

Thanks BigDaddyG. Someone with fouls to give I guess who can also put up some points.
I honestly think aldrich is the same kind of player but better and would cost less.

I was thinking vets minimum or slightly less for Smith too.
I tell ya what, this guy wouldn't be my first choice, but he wouldn't be terrible. 7', moves pretty well, can block a shot and he can really shoot the ball. Not bad. Pretty good fallback option when you think about him...We'll see.

I don't know who jason smith is but I assume he is a white guy based on your comparison
How come white guys are never compared to black guys? Seems a bit wrong.

Smith can shoot Cole can't. I think I remember Smith being a good three point shooter but I could be wrong. I think Smith fits the triangle better.

so he is more like joe klein will purdue, jack haley, bill wenington and longley?
Smith and Aldrich are quite a bit different I think. Smith is more of an offensive player, more mobile, definitely a lot more slightly built than Aldrich. Aldrich is more physically imposing and more of a banger/rebounder than this guy. I don't see why we shouldn't bring in both guys and Tyler as well. Might as well have 4 big dudes that can play a little with a couple that can swing over to PF like Tyler and Smith.
Looks like he made 2.5mm last year and is still reasonably young, so we'll either have to use the mini-MLE or the trade exception.

Kyle Korver gets compared to Ray Allen. Harden gets compared to Ginobli(he's not "white" i know). I like to compare Jr to Korver and Redick.
When I say same kind of player I mean off the bench big that can score a little and play D. I think Aldrich is the better defender, rebounder, and his scoring is underrated. HE just looks so dang awkward at everything that stuff he does go unnoticed. I would like if he had more minutes playing in the league but I can only go by the minutes he has played.
