I am just talking about his point of view though. If I were the Knicks, I would never offer him a max contract.

Phil probably explained multiple scenarios. One with him taking the max and another with him taking a smaller salary. Phil probably showed the potential options he would have if Melo took less.

So while the max is on the table, he probably gave Melo something to think about.

I agree, thats probably what happened.

I may be way off but here's what I think may be happening. The Knicks have not made any offers to Melo. Instead Phil had discussed various scenarios with him of how the team would be built at various price levels for him. Then he has asked Melo to come back worth what he thinks is the right price for himself and the best approach to build a contender. We are not committed to anything yet but we haven't taken anything of the table either. Once Melo comes back we can agree to what he wants, make a counter offer or move on.

I think that's a pretty reasonable scenario. Melo and Phil are not stupid and putting all the cards on the table is the right approach so both sides understand what the possibilities are at different price points.

You are probably right. But this is a team that announced they would match Lin for any amount on a press conference (at least tge wooden headed head coach did) and then didn't even make him an offer. So anything is possible.

I think its a PR move. Showing that Knicks think Melo is a max contract player but Melo wants to win so he will take a pay cut for the good of the team.

I think you're both right that Phil tried to subtly steer Melo towards taking less (with his Zen magic), that it would be in his best interest as a player who wants a ring to do so. We should know soon enough if it worked.

Melo did say he would take less during the all-star break. So if he takes less he is keeping to his word. I never heard anything different. Phil Jackson was the one who put fire on Melo's words. I think Phil got his PR together and him and Melo is on the same page. It will be a wonderful thing seeing Melo back with the Knicks with that smile of his and a clear path to a championship mastermind by the Zen master.

I remember that, but saying it and doing it are two different things, especially when there is that much money on the table. I agree that it sounds like they're on the same page and that Melo will likely take less, how much less is hard to say.

If Fisher can get this team to exceed most of the "expert's" expectations for the Knicks next season, it will be easier to attract FAs. Id be happy if we can just get to the playoffs, anything after that would be gravy, barring a major upgrade in talent.

beginning to feel a little bit like Kerr in that the media has all conceded Kerr/Melo is going to sign with the knicks ... and yet what is the hold up now? what are we waiting for?

Melo said he was going to take this holiday weekend to mull it over. Just finished his visit to other teams. My guess is we will know some time next week.

nixluva @ 7/5/2014 6:34 PM
There's no need to rush! IMO no way he walks away from our max offer now. Phil has shown he can make smart deals and Melo can win here, get paid and not have to leave the city he and his family love. I think he'll take the pay cut in year 2 and trust should be enough to allow us to add another player.
CrushAlot @ 7/5/2014 6:36 PM
If Melo waits and Phil can trade Stat does that Create enough cap space to offer Pau a deal?

He also said it the choices are down to NY, LA and Chicago. I don't even think the Bulls believe that.

this makes no sense.

if he is smart, he CHOOSES to take less so that HE can be surrounded with a better team.

Knicks22 @ 7/6/2014 3:25 AM
we'll learn soon enough. Max contract a foolish offer - just a coincidence that the past four years the two dominant teams - Heat and Spurs - had elite, HOF players - who played for less (much less) than max?

Simply doesn't work in cap to allocate that much to any player, let alone volume shooter who chose not to play for prior coach with 'pass the ball system' (MDA), and, i doubt will change his game for this regime.

Even the Yankees - operating without any cap - damaged by long term 'max' contracts for players (CC, Jeter, Arod, Tex) who aren't playing, or, are fractions of their former selves.

Amazing sport the NBA - where folks view contracts expiring as a major asset. NYK history - hamstrung by Houston's deal, then, Amare's, to once again offer contract which will likely be as unproductive as those - makes no sense.

THey went for it, and I give Dolan credit - thought pairing Melo and Amare - and Tyson - would be our version of Big Three - but for host of reasons (including, when Amare was healthy, he and Melo seemingly unable to be on court together since each couldnt (wouldn't?) play in theother's preferred offensive system), it didn't work. Tyson gone, Stat contract done soon - extending Melo for 5 years a mistake, in my view.....

Now to be fair, you would have to apply that equation to all recipients of sport contracts, movie deals or stock transfers. Let's not leave out the owners of said enterprises.

Jmpasq @ 7/6/2014 11:46 AM
If Melo resigns he may take less but it wont the less that will make a difference to this roster. He will get 5 for 125 or something, for the Knicks to win he has to go 5 for 80 at the most

are you saying somebody earning 145 dollars per second is being exploited? how about the poor slob who forks over 12 dollars for a light beer to watch one first round exit after another because the guy earning 145 dollars a second won't play for 98 dollars a second instead?
