This may be the route to take going forward. Rather then overpay a free agent trade for unwanted expiring deals and assets.

They immediately get an asset and have the potential of doubling up if they end up moving these vets to contenders at the trade deadline.

Yea

I wonder if it would be a good practice to continually create 10mil in cap space each yr looking to use that for unwanted expiring contracts in order to add assets. Then use the assets to move up in the draft to add higher caliber of players. So rather then spending on free agents you would be spending on better draft talent. And it wouldn't matter if you are winning 50 games a year or not.

If we traded Shump with Amar'e, it leaves us with zero defense in the backcourt:

Calderon
Larkin
Tim Jr
JR Smith

Anji @ 7/8/2014 5:41 AM
Still have ellington and priggy on the roster, plus JR has been much improved in the last two years. Thanasis Antetokounmpo is also a tweener SG/Sf, far from nothing less, got to pull that trigger...

This is not football. Shumpert isn't Sherman.

This is a tired argument. Stump hasn't stopped anyone in his career. He's overrated in that regard

Yes indeed

I'm thinking this might be a plan b type deal if Melo signs elsewhere. Thaddeus Young would be a nice piece.

The kid I really like in Philly is Wroten

It would be good practice to not add contracts that take up future cap space unless we're getting a great player also.

I forgot they also got Jerami Grant and KJ Mc Daniel in the second round. Getting either of those guys thrown in would be great. I thought both might go in the first round.

+1. Once he learns how to shoot, he'll be a monster.

He's better than Tim Jr and Calderon! Shump seemed to motivate/inspire the team to play better defense when he started playing good defense. He took a step back last year, but before that he was capable of being a good defender.

I would rather use Stat as an asset to get something in return at the trade deadline. That HUGE expiring contract is going to be great come February.

what if he is giving you 15/6 off the bench and shooting 55% and playing a great P&R next to Larkin and the Knicks are leading the Atlantic and are 3rd in the East. Still trade him? I think we could see that scenario..

The pick and roll is de-emphasized in the triangle in lieu of better floor spacing and coordinated player movement. That right there is why Amar'e should be on the block.

knicks1248 @ 7/8/2014 1:45 PM
I think melo is waiting to see what kind of deal phil maybe able to swing, and then that will dictate what kind of contract he will sign.

Thats why stat is now been shopped to a team with major cap space, everyone trying to dump a salary to gain a star is calling phili..

they have already said it wont be a pure triangle and Fish is free to put his own wrinkles in. Also Larkin was literally the best P&R PG in college, if you what your saying is true makes his aquisition puzzling.

I suspect the Amare thing is just a feel it out. We all know he's not a part of the future here so its just a matter of time. The question is when and does PHil try to get something out of him first? Then again maybe he stays as bench guy for years like McDyess did in Det.

Anything is possible at this point.

Great question. I guess it depends on what we are getting back. If you sell, might as well sell high.

tough one... but I can really see Amare having a bounce back season. He works crazy hard. If he's playing really well and the Knicks are a top 4 seed what do you do? Gotta figure we stand pat but that would be selling high!

The concern about Amar'e has never been his game. It's been his health. 20 consecutive game of good play won't dissuade the skeptics.

Certain elements of the college game translate well to the pros e.g. rebounding. Most of those qualities are only applicable to big men and big men skills. I'm skeptical of Larkin's ability to reproduce his P&R numbers because of his inability to see over the defenses. There's only one small PG that beat the odds in recent memory and that was CP3. But with CP3, he was always an element athlete and built like a bull, which Larkin is not. This is why I haven't thought much of Larkin's acquisition and remain skeptical of his ability to have any kind of staying power in this league. It doesn't always come down to skill or heart, after all because if it did, Pierre Jackson would've been in the league last season and dudes like Sebastian Telfair and Andre Barrett would've been household names.

As for Amare, I'd try to move him at ASAP. Every season we've expected him to morph back into a star, and we've been left disappointed after each. It's not a matter of heart with him, it's a matter of health, which leads me to believe that this season will be no different in spite of how hard he may work. Let's cut the umbilical cord and be done with him entirely. Yes, guys like McDyess has beaten the odds but with him, only his knee has been an issue. With Amar'e it's been his entire body, which makes it that much more unlikely that he'll ever be the same.
