Maybe it seems too outlandish but not sure why this isn't viewed as the biggest threat to Melo returning to NYC. If Bosh goes to Houston and Melo still isn't signed, I'm inclined to agree with Stephen A. (yikes) and think that Melo lives the dream and plays with his Superman BFF. They could come close to maxing him out if Bosh is off the books and Wade re-signs at a discount for more years, no? Seems like Lebron could keep Bosh and everyone in the dark, maybe even privately give some vibes one way or the other to the right people, keep everybody shaking in their boots about what the King will do, Anthony stalls for a bit, and then Bosh feels he can't NOT sign a Houston max deal much longer. He caves and goes to Houston, Riley pounces with his best offer to Melo.
As a Knick fan who wants Melo back (albeit ideally at a discount), this is what I see as our biggest potential problem. I mean last season Wade+Bosh = $18.6+$19M, respectively, next year potentially is Wade = $14M. That is $23M surplus. Please, capologists, tell me that the Heat wouldn't be able to muster a tempting offer for Melo. Otherwise, I feel like Miami could surprise everyone again.

This seems like a very likely scenario to me and it's bizarre the rumor crazed media isn't talking about it more. That and Carmelo has been reported to be wanting to make a decision "quickly" and that hasn't happened. It seems like he's waiting for Lebron's decision to happen first.
Also, how does Bosh not take 97 mil from HOU? That basically the perfect system for him. He ain't getting close to that in Miami.
I agree with you. I thnk LA and Chi are second to Miami if he leaves NYC.
Melo on the Heat with Lebron would be a pretty bad team.

We need to find a way to dump Amare on the sixers. That will kill the Melo to Heat scenario. Rockets can't take Bosh unless they can trade Lin. If we dump Amare first the sixers won't trade for Lin anymore. If Lebron and Melo team up, it needs to be in NY. Getting rid of Amare can help do both. Give the sixers whatever they want.

I don't think he is scared of the ny media and fans. I think if he stays it is for the security of that fifth year and for his family. However, I think he wants to play with another star. Kobe, Noah , Bron etc. He doesn't have that in ny and he won't for awhile.
From the "it's all about winning" perspective, you know that Melo believes that playing with Lebron provides it (true or not). In this scenario, I could even see him taking a discount from the full max if it meant teaming up with LBJ as well as giving Riles a bit of help to improve the team. They just have to wait out Bosh.
I agree that not having accepted the NYK max offer yet is a bad sign for NYK Melo fans. I tend to think that he feels positive about Phil Jackson and what he has pitched, and obviously when PJax talks about basketball he is impressive, but Melo has to look at the Knick roster right now and feel his clock is ticking, no time to waste. If he can make a big jump next year, he has to do it.

I dont think signing Melo for five years is a bad move for the Knicks. I think it is a great move for him. He has a very physical game and could get hurt or breakdown sooner than some of his peers. That money might not be there in 4 yrs if he is hobbled like a Wade or Nash.

Of course its great for him but he knows that if he takes that contract and he does not succeed in NY he will be vilified worse than Arod.

No, 'scared' of the media and fans is not the reason. He would stay 1) for the most money and/or 2) because he talks himself into buying into the Phil Jackson Vision For The New York Knicks.

This article does not seem to be accurate. If they sign Melo using cap space after Bosh goes, they should not be able to use the cap exceptions to sign McRoberts and Granger. The regular cap space would have to be used for them. They still have the cap holds for the big 3, but if Bosh leaves, and it blows up, they don't get the mid level exception and LL exception because they will already be under the cap including cap holds, is that correct? So McRoberts and Granger would be a $7M hit to the cap space making it that much harder.

I am not a cap expert but Berger is one of the best at his craft in my opinion. If he made a mistake my guess is he will 'update' the article.
