I would respect Melo if he went to the Bulls, its not like going to the Heat with LeBron there. His rep would still take a hit if he followed up this movie of the week ending with LeBron and the Cavs, and bailed.

If melo went to the bulls for less it would show that he is serious about winning right now. Personally i like the youth movement so getting mcdermott and first rounder sis intruging to me. However if melo tells Phil he wants to come back for a lot less in order to help the Knicks build better around him i will give him props

Puts pressure on Anthony.

James is getting the $$, but he was most likely going to get another chance at a title if the big three came back and Riley fine-tuned the Heat roster.

As you said, you can respect Anthony if he takes less to go to Chicago in a S&T with the Knicks, or if he works out his contract with the Knicks to take less than Max so we can sign another star. If he simply demands the Max from Phil and we are somehow limited in roster flexibility because of that I will be pissed off.

Exactly. Thats the only point i've been trying to make through thsi whole process. It doesnt mean i dislike melo or dont wnat him on teh Knicks it simply means its will benefit everyone in the knicks organization(including melo) if he takes less and we have more flexibility to sign better talent. I mena lest be honest melo can build a mansion out of %100 bills so taking less wot hurt him

2014 much more pleasant to be around lol

You know that based on? He is supposedly bipolar and has always been either a doll or nightmare to be around, depending on the day.

almost, if not entirely, makes up for departure and the crap that went with it.

You have to respect how much he has grown since then and he really has achieved a lot - 4 straight finals, 2 championships. Now he is going back to Cleveland to resurrect their franchise. Its huge.

I am not a big fan of Lebron but I definitely respect him more after the past few years and now this.

Winning 1 title with the Cavs is worth 3 more with the Heat.

How many players have won championships with multiple teams as the key player? Shaq maybe? But even then Wade was beginning to take over.

I agree, asking for the max and talking championships out of the other side of his mouth would be tough to swallow for some fans. Melo should get paid what the market says he's worth, but it will be hard to square Melo taking the max with his dreams of getting a ring.

Whats Miami gonna do with the close to 40mm of cap holds that are gonna be released when Lebron and Bosh sign elsewhere. And where does Dwayne go?

has to be very few, if any (not including shaq)-- though that probably is impacted by lack of fa way back and even more recent, how many teams lost their best player after winning a title or making multiple finals in a row.

Wow, this was rumoured to be a possibility all season, but i never in a million years thought it was true! Respect to Lebron- he's really matured these past few years. Kind of awkward when Melo announces he's doing the opposite of Lebron and going to the Bulls!

At this point, my dream would be to trade melo to the Cavs for Wiggins & Bennett and a pick. However, looks like they're about to land Love (also note Lebron makes no mention of Wiggins and Bennett in his letter). Number two would be a S& T with the Bulls, number 3 is Melo at the max.

Who does Bron want to play with more - Love or Melo? I'd gladly take that package in a S&T.

Completely agree. Same goes for if Melo wins 1 in NY as opposed to multiple in LA or Chi.

Yup...

Mark Messier won multiple Stanley Cups with the Oilers, but is more revered and famous for the single Cup he won with the Rangers.

I remember that Le Batard Heat journalist (remember him from some racist crap back in the LJ days) gloating when Lebron signed with the Heat in 2010 and laughing saying "New York, welcome to another decade of irrelevance!" etc. Well, what goes around, comes around...

Heat fans are terrible- at least Cavs fans will truly appreciate a championship, Heat fans even turned up late to playoff games.

Love is the better fit for the Cavs, to be honest. Maybe something personal comes into it. However, I can't see Cleveland ticking the boxes for nice places for his family to live.

Yea but you mix bipolar and hard drugs and things get ugly like it did in the 90s

Around the 1.47 min mark, and again at the 2.33min mark. Man, that annoyed me so much 4 years ago!

Miami media and fans are the worst. They don't deserve a good team. If not for Riley Miami basketball would be non existent

Knicksfan @ 7/11/2014 1:43 PM
I thought LeBron was a great player before the infamous "Decision". A great player isn't only able to dominate in a basketball court, but lead a group of men into becoming a team that can win together. LeBron became a joke for me when he went to Miami with all the parties and immature quotes.

But today I think that changed for all, including me. May be shameless manipulation to clean his image, but it takes courage to admit your mistakes and take a big decision like this one. Amazing how a simple essay can turn a villain into a hero that I'm sure will make fans root for him whenever he reaches an NBA Finals again. I want my Knicks to win first, but it will be memorable whenever LeBron gets that championship with Cleveland.

Great news for an intense fanbase that suffered losing someone they truly see as a son. This is great for the league.

Good job, LeBron.

That would be the ultimate factor to separate Melo and LeBron. Compared so many times, yet really different.

But we will see what Melo does...

This. I was impressed with the power and clarity of his words. I bought it all

THIS IS no surprise. There were strong indications that he was going back to cleveland.. just some knick fans were holding out this unrealistic hope of he and carmelo in new york...

Now look for kevin love to go to cleveland and the cavs can dangle wiggins and Thompson to the wolves.. good for both teams..

nyk4ever wrote:http://www.si.com/nba/2014/07/11/lebron-...

Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled. It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son. Their passion can be overwhelming. But it drives me. I want to give them hope when I can. I want to inspire them when I can. My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now.

Remember when I was sitting up there at the Boys & Girls Club in 2010? I was thinking, This is really tough. I could feel it. I was leaving something I had spent a long time creating. If I had to do it all over again, I’d obviously do things differently, but I’d still have left. Miami, for me, has been almost like college for other kids. These past four years helped raise me into who I am. I became a better player and a better man. I learned from a franchise that had been where I wanted to go. I will always think of Miami as my second home. Without the experiences I had there, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today.

I went to Miami because of D-Wade and CB. We made sacrifices to keep UD. I loved becoming a big bro to Rio. I believed we could do something magical if we came together. And that’s exactly what we did! The hardest thing to leave is what I built with those guys. I’ve talked to some of them and will talk to others. Nothing will ever change what we accomplished. We are brothers for life. I also want to thank Micky Arison and Pat Riley for giving me an amazing four years.

I’m doing this essay because I want an opportunity to explain myself uninterrupted. I don’t want anyone thinking: He and Erik Spoelstra didn’t get along. … He and Riles didn’t get along. … The Heat couldn’t put the right team together. That’s absolutely not true.

I’m not having a press conference or a party. After this, it’s time to get to work.

When I left Cleveland, I was on a mission. I was seeking championships, and we won two. But Miami already knew that feeling. Our city hasn’t had that feeling in a long, long, long time. My goal is still to win as many titles as possible, no question. But what’s most important for me is bringing one trophy back to Northeast Ohio.

I always believed that I’d return to Cleveland and finish my career there. I just didn’t know when. After the season, free agency wasn’t even a thought. But I have two boys and my wife, Savannah, is pregnant with a girl. I started thinking about what it would be like to raise my family in my hometown. I looked at other teams, but I wasn’t going to leave Miami for anywhere except Cleveland. The more time passed, the more it felt right. This is what makes me happy.

To make the move I needed the support of my wife and my mom, who can be very tough. The letter from Dan Gilbert, the booing of the Cleveland fans, the jerseys being burned -- seeing all that was hard for them. My emotions were more mixed. It was easy to say, “OK, I don’t want to deal with these people ever again.” But then you think about the other side. What if I were a kid who looked up to an athlete, and that athlete made me want to do better in my own life, and then he left? How would I react? I’ve met with Dan, face-to-face, man-to-man. We’ve talked it out. Everybody makes mistakes. I’ve made mistakes as well. Who am I to hold a grudge?

I’m not promising a championship. I know how hard that is to deliver. We’re not ready right now. No way. Of course, I want to win next year, but I’m realistic. It will be a long process, much longer than it was in 2010. My patience will get tested. I know that. I’m going into a situation with a young team and a new coach. I will be the old head. But I get a thrill out of bringing a group together and helping them reach a place they didn’t know they could go. I see myself as a mentor now and I’m excited to lead some of these talented young guys. I think I can help Kyrie Irving become one of the best point guards in our league. I think I can help elevate Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters. And I can’t wait to reunite with Anderson Varejao, one of my favorite teammates.

But this is not about the roster or the organization. I feel my calling here goes above basketball. I have a responsibility to lead, in more ways than one, and I take that very seriously. My presence can make a difference in Miami, but I think it can mean more where I’m from. I want kids in Northeast Ohio, like the hundreds of Akron third-graders I sponsor through my foundation, to realize that there’s no better place to grow up. Maybe some of them will come home after college and start a family or open a business. That would make me smile. Our community, which has struggled so much, needs all the talent it can get.

In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have.

I’m ready to accept the challenge. I’m coming home.

nice letter... mature words from lebron..

good for him and the fans in cleveland..
