If the Max was put on the table then you really can't take your cards back. However maybe the max was offered but without a no trade clause. The second option maybe a slightly less contract with a player option. The third maybe even less with a no trade clause and so on and so on.

Phil did the best he could- offer the max, but make sure everyone knows he was also offered less to help his team. Then it's all in Melo's court. If Phil had offered him less, he would have left and Phil would have been blasted for letting him get away.
He wants a no-trade clause on top of the Max?! I'm gonna have a really hard time rooting for this guy if both of these conditions are true. Throw all that talk about winning out the window. MElo needs to put MElo first! Are you sure you don't want to sign with Chicago? Just gotta hope it's not really the Max if he really can't be traded, that's all I can say. Talk about selfish IF this is true.

That would mean Hardaway and Shump would be gone. I can deal with Shump but Hardaway is a no. Gasol is not likely to make the kNicks a contender this year and giving up assets to get rid of contracts that will be coming off the books is not that smart. I could see if it was a younger player that hasn't peaked but Gasol is on the way down.
isola reporting it won't be for the max $129 mil, but don't expect $100 mil either.

Phil said they offered Melo 5 contracts so I was just giving a possible scenario of what the contracts maybe. It is what it is. He'll make what he will make and the knicks will just have to work around it. Their main goal should be to develop their young assets this year.

Because they obviously made him a priority and if I'm a player I am not signing a contract without a no trade clause so I can be sent to a place I don't want to go. That's crazy. People should get the idea of his contract of not having a No-Trade clause out of their mind. It doesn't make any sense for him not to have one.

Letting Melo walk for nothing wasn't going to guarantee 'chips or 50 win seasons either.
No it wouldn't but letting him walk for nothing wouldn't hamstring us for the next 5 years either. And, again I'm repeating myself like a broken record, my preferred plan was to S&T with Chicago or another team and exchange for draft picks and/or young talent.
Right now our team is:
C: Dalembert, Aldrich
PF: Melo, Amare, Bargs
SF: Early
SG: Shump, JR, THJr, Ellington
PG: Calderon, Pablo, Larkin
Plus we have the taxpayer MLE, or possibly the full MLE if we waive Dalembert, to add another player.
Next year, our team is:
C: Aldrich?
PF: Melo
SF: Early
SG: Shump, THJr
PG: Calderon
And our cap figure will be around $36M. That doesn't include JR's $6M player option. It also doesn't include Early, our 2015 1st, or anyone we sign this year with the MLE. if you add those in we're probably talking about a cap figure of $45M.
Who are we realistically adding to that team that puts us into title contention. Or even ECF contention?

No-trade clauses aren't that common I don't think...
If he takes the 7.5% less in year 2, the contract would look like 5 yrs/116mm

If it's 5 years 120 range that is all we could have hoped for. Great day for the Knicks. Much better value than bosh and wade (assuming he gets huge deal) as well.
We have to build a team. We can't look at it like who are we gonna add for X dollars that will make us a contender. I think we need to keep looking for cheap players we can develop and draft picks. It's not just about what FA we can sign. We'll get someone who can help, just not some savior.

I wouldn't do it if we had to give up Shump or Tim Jr. I'm no cap expert but maybe we could trade Bargs and Ellington for Gasol? Lakers at least get a player this season and a shooter.
