That would mean Hardaway and Shump would be gone. I can deal with Shump but Hardaway is a no. Gasol is not likely to make the kNicks a contender this year and giving up assets to get rid of contracts that will be coming off the books is not that smart. I could see if it was a younger player that hasn't peaked but Gasol is on the way down.
I wouldn't do it if we had to give up Shump or Tim Jr. I'm no cap expert but maybe we could trade Bargs and Ellington for Gasol? Lakers at least get a player this season and a shooter.

And unless we're somehow getting Durant in 2016, and I have no idea why he'd come here, I'm not seeing how we win 50+ games per year let alone compete for a title.
Letting Melo walk for nothing wasn't going to guarantee 'chips or 50 win seasons either.
No it wouldn't but letting him walk for nothing wouldn't hamstring us for the next 5 years either. And, again I'm repeating myself like a broken record, my preferred plan was to S&T with Chicago or another team and exchange for draft picks and/or young talent.
And our cap figure will be around $36M. That doesn't include JR's $6M player option. It also doesn't include Early, our 2015 1st, or anyone we sign this year with the MLE. if you add those in we're probably talking about a cap figure of $45M.
Who are we realistically adding to that team that puts us into title contention. Or even ECF contention?
Didn't know Fished planned on playing Melo at 4. The lineups aren't contenders yet but they would look more balanced with Melo at 3, like Fish will probably go with in the triangle.

True... if Bosh is worth max money, Melo is worth max and a half.

I agree. Melo got his. Now he can feed his family. He and Phil must work together to make it work. There will be no super star coming in the future unless its home grown.
BRIGGS@ 7/12/2014 2:24 PM
The way Melo did this--Im scared of him being a problem into a multitude of areas. If he had signed last week and said this is where I wanted to be--I wouldnt care if he had the whole 129---now we have to hope--but lets hope for the best.

I don't know that he is. I'm putting Melo at the 4 based on the fact that we've been a consistently better team with him playing PF and as he ages and slows down he probably won't be able to play the 3.

It really just depends on what Chicago is offering. Chicago can amnesty Boozer to get under the cap in the end so it makes sense to get something for him. The knicks may not have room to sign him under a sign in trade. Also, Early maybe in the package since he is not signed and is a second round pick which is pretty valuable when it comes to their contracts. idk, how the Knicks makes any move for Pau that would really make sense.

I'd have
C: Cole or Dalembert PF: Melo SF: Early SG: JR PG: Calderon

Now if Phil can get the Gasol brothers, and get rid of the orange uniforms... I'm ready to say I love you, man.

Marc will be available next year, just in time for Andrea Bumbarney's contract to expire.

Anxious to see the details of the deal.

You must remember Melo's management team is no longer controlling us. Phil stopped that. I beleive that Melos management wanted Chi town. No more JR Smith brother signings because of the players representative calling the shot for us.
VDesai@ 7/12/2014 2:35 PM
Frank Isola @FisolaNYDN 34m Carmelo has notified all teams, including the Bulls, that he is returning to the Knicks.
StarksEwing1@ 7/12/2014 2:37 PM
Now that Melo got his money he has some work to do. Scoring is nice but he needs to be better defensively and making his teammates around him better. i know he has teh ability but now its time to take teh next step and be better in the playoffs as well

But why is he leaving Memphis, a much better team than ours that can pay him more over more years, to come here?

He's 30 years old, there is no next step. At this point he is what he is as a player.
VDesai@ 7/12/2014 2:39 PM
If he takes the 7.5% decrease in year 2, the difference comes out to 3.3mm

The only reason is the organization issues Memphis has and in the east he can tip the scales more. I personally would like to go after Lopez but Portland may max him and Aldrigde out which would be dumb.
MaTT4281@ 7/12/2014 2:46 PM
Frank Isola @FisolaNYDN 33m I'm pretty sure Carmelo will take less than $129 million. Not saying it will be five years $100 but it won't be $129 million

He's going to sign with the Jimmy Dolan owned Knicks because of organizational issues with Memphis? o_0 If that's his what his decision making process is like I'd question if we should sign him at all!

Watch it will probably be 120-125 million and he will say he took less lol
