Because, you guys realize it is purposely set up so that the team that is re-signing him has the luxury of offering the most money?
Also, it's being reported he gave the Knicks a discount in 2015, the year we have cap space, why would he do that if he could have had the max?
Tim Duncan is at the end of his rope. Melo is in his Prime. There's a difference there. As I already said, The LeBron/Wade/Bosh thing was BS and to be honest, I think they all are kind of glad it's over with the paycuts and as you can see, Bosh was not so quick to give the Heat another discount, instead made them severely overpay.
Nowhere did I say Melo's resume stacked up with theirs. I can just admit we should be thanking Melo for staying and buying in to Phil's plan. If he did not, we'd be laughingstocks next season, and it would make the rebuilding job harder. Instead, all us fans do is bash him because he took the contract we offered, which included a paycut.
What do you mean no one is bashing him? The first 5 responses on the "Props to Melo" thread are sarcastic jabs. I'm not kissing his butt, just looking at the situation realistically. He could have left, but chose to stay and stick it out. Props. That literally all I'm saying. No one is saying build a statue. Just, "Props to Melo," as the thread suggests.

You can play around with the amount he gets for 2015, but it still gives us limited financial flexibility, and it would mean that the other years are basically at the max amount.
Have to go back to how we originally got him. You know... the contract and trade he squeezed out of us. We had to pay a lot of money to sign him, give up many assets, and then watch as he decided to opt out of the final year (telling us before the season), and get wined and dined by other suitors- squeezing us for a five year deal and limiting the assets we could bring to the Knicks in the future. It also sounds like he wants a no-trade deal, which limits our future flexibility even more.
Folks seem to look at this contract without even thinking of how we got him. Gave up a lot of stuff to get him the last time...potentially keeping us from a getting lot of stuff the next 5 years.
Melo has played hard (for the most part), and improved his long range shot to an extent, but he has also morphed from a SF to a PF, unless he can lost about 25 lbs., and this hurts our interior D because he is only a marginal help defender, and adds no length or shot blocking ability to the team at the PF position.
Just don't feel I can give him any "props" at this time. Maybe someday, but not now.

Carmelo easily could have left and gone to a much better team, but chose to stay a Knick. It was not completely about money as the Bulls and Lakers offered him very hefty contracts as well. The Knicks were in a position to offer him more and they did. But he clearly wants to play for the Knicks and deserves credit and respect from Knicks fans for that decision.

How this team will get 50 wins?... come on...
This is the same team with Felon replaced with better option and Tyson with worth...
A couple of nice young players and new coach, completely new system...
This will take some time, hopefully 1 year, to get it going.
And then Zen will hopefully get us some real help.
Melo will need to suck it up for at least another season.
No doubt he get paid for this but still... this is risky business for him if winning is a concern.
The ideal outcome is to tank it and get highest possible lottery pick but for this Melo should simulate really serious injury...
Seriously every year Knicks fans are getting too exited just to get blasted with reality later.

I just think it would have been very easy for him to go to the Bulls and say "screw it" to Phil and Fisher's rebuilding attempt. He wants a championship. Instead, he decided to buy in and stick it out in NY, knowing full well we will not compete next year for a title.
The bulls were never a player so long as they would not amnesty boozer. Melos all about the paper and 16 mil a year never would have got it done

Nah, having him back is better than him walking. I'm not that truly that upset about the price because Phil seems to me the type to take everything into consideration before acting. We cannot know all the factors in play that lead to this signing because we were not all talking on the phones with other GMs, having fancy private dinners with Melo, talking down Melo's agent etc...
All I'm saying is that it does not seem to me, the casual, uninformed observer that the bulls were a threat so long as their owner refused to pay the amnesty. The Bulls may very well have been lining up a situation in which they free up cap space, and maybe Phil acted based on this or other knowledge we are not aware of. Perhaps Melo is truly a fool and would have chosen to play for the Lakers, and Phil acted swiftly before Melo could leave us high and dry. I'm happy we still have the most talented player on the roster and that he gave us that "wiggle room" in 2015. Granted, I remain worried about his shoulders, but being realistic this was a satisfactory outcome, not the tragedy our local drama queens make it out to be.
Six Million. That's a lot of money.
I don't care how much more money he has and how much more money he has coming to him, six million dollars is nothing to take for granted.

$6M is a lot of money for the vast majority of people. For Melo, it's only 4% of his current contract.
if your boss tells you he's gonna give you a 4.6% pay cut or a 4.6% pay raise, would you shrug that off?
