Phil suggests that Melo did take less money. "He did exactly what we asked him to," & that it may provide a little more wiggle room in 2015.

Well if thats the case then good. But i've been hearing 122 million which is as close to the max as you can get

Biggest thing for the Knicks would be he took less in 2015 which is when we will have space.

I trust Phil so i am not worried. When it comes to melo i just call what i have seen in his career. great scorer we know that and good rebounder since he plays the 4 against bigger guys. However needs to really work on being a better defender and need to get others involved and the ball needs to keep moving. too many times the ball just sticks and we go full ISO
I thought it was obvious he took less than max the first day. Woj and others said he was negotiating a contract. There is no negotiation needed when you are taking a max contract.
I'll give a player with Melo's ability a chance to play in the system that made Jordan and Kobe top 5 all time players. He has the skillset. I also don't grudge him for taking a near max salary when he clearly is one of the few players in the NBA that deserves to be paid in that bracket. I also don't grudge the Knicks for paying for him rather than saving the space to chase after what really amount to be lesser players. I think all in all, things worked out. It was just tedious watching it play out.

Yeah I think this is likely why it took so long. I give Phil credit for not backing off his stance and I do give Melo credit for coming around (though we still could give him more money than anyone). It was worth Melo's while from a negotiating standpoint to make a few visits and leak some interest, but ultimately both sides came to a fair arrangment.
a little more wiggle room in 2015Not sure that taking about $7M less that the Max gives us much wiggle room.
$110M for 5 years would have given Phil some real room to maneuver, but we knew after the reported Bosh contract that this could never happen.
For better or worse, Phil and Melo have a 5 year marriage that will last as long as they are associated with the Knicks.
Unfortunately, Phil just gave Melo a wedding ring so costly it might just keep them from buying the dream house which both of them want.
7 million over a five year period. melo is a saint.

Yeah we should make a statue. Even though im a diehard Knick fan but i really respect a guy like Tim Duncan. He is probably one of the best players i have ever seen besides jordan/lebron and the guy continues to take less. No wonder San Antonio wins for 20 years

oh didn't you get the memo? melo is actually better than duncan-- and more accomplished-- at similar points in their respective careers.

Dont get me wrong im glad melo is back or at least we didnt lose him for nothing. However lets be real he took the most money any team could offer. Taking a few million less doesnt warrant praise of a president lol. I mean we bust our butts 7 days a week at our jobs and our families and make barely a fraction of his salary
Have the details been actually published?
Maybe now the cap crybabies can relax a bit and just get on with watching to see how things develop from here. There's still a ton of things to be done and Phil has work to do on this roster. His plan A is still going according to plan. Gonna be interesting to see what happens next.

Of course not!
The toilet paper brand is kept secret in knick land.

Again stop insulting posters for no reason. Nobody is bashing the guy they simply are concerned with the salary cap.
Don't tell me what to do!!!

We need to stop with the Melo hate and let Phil do his thing with Melo and this team.

Instead of telling me what to do, you need to consider that you are also speaking for everyone else and you can't possibly know what everyone else is really thinking. I call it as I see it based on the comments people make themselves. There is much too much venom aimed at Melo and not enough clear thinking IMO. I've bashed Melo in the past when I felt he wasn't doing the right thing. There's nothing wrong with that. However, there has been a lot of nastiness towards him which isn't warranted based on how he's been handling things the last year or so. This franchise has new leadership and Melo is taking to that leadership well so far. We can see that he's here and has done as Phil has asked. What else is there for him to do at this point?

Go look up his salary history. Taking less didn't happen until he was 35

The Melo Haters simply want to see a championship team and paying a player outside the best 10 in the game the highest contract in the sport doesnt help that ultimate goal
