Knicks · Phil confirms: Melo took less than max (page 3)

I don't think he expected a 30 year old to take a 12 million dollar pay cut so that he could trump Duncan by beating him to taking a big hit for the team by 6 years. Duncan was making the big bucks through age 36. Same thing as Dirk. Those guys also play in Texas where there isn't a state income tax. You seem to pile on every time someone trashes melo but qualify it with a, don't get me wrong... Comparing Duncan taking less at the end of his career versus a guy in his prime isn't fair or accurate. What was Duncan making at age 30 in a state without state income tax?

Yeah we should make a statue. Even though im a diehard Knick fan but i really respect a guy like Tim Duncan. He is probably one of the best players i have ever seen besides jordan/lebron and the guy continues to take less. No wonder San Antonio wins for 20 years
Cool. Can we addend this then and agree that Duncan got paid a ton of money and then adjusted after he turned 36? Also, Spurs are a great organization but they hit the jackpot having two hof big men for the past 20+ years on their team.

Secondly i would never comapre the two because lets face it Duncan is teh better player in his prime and a hall of famerStarksEwing1 wrote:CrushAlot wrote:Again its not that big of deal so case closedStarksEwing1 wrote:Well he wasn't and shouldn't take Gordon Hayward money or Parsons money. Phil seems happy with the deal. Reports are Ariza had the same deal in Washington as Houston and wanted to go back to the Wiz but the tax difference was significant enough that it played a role in his decision.CrushAlot wrote:Sorry Crush but that simply sint the case. I have defended Melo plenty fo times. i have called out a few people who just bash melo. I have said 100 times im happy to have him bcak and have no problem with the contract but i personally would have preferred him take 100-110 million because they would have been a tremednous sacrifice from him. Im sorry that i havent complimented him to the moon like soem ahve but taht doesnt mean i dislike teh guy not even closeStarksEwing1 wrote:nixluva wrote:Don't tell me what to do!!!Well you are beign ridiculous. You seem to pile on every time someone trashes melo but qualify it with a, don't get me wrong... Comparing Duncan taking less at the end of his career versus a guy in his prime isn't fair or accurate. What was Duncan making at age 30 in a state without state income tax?Yeah we should make a statue. Even though im a diehard Knick fan but i really respect a guy like Tim Duncan. He is probably one of the best players i have ever seen besides jordan/lebron and the guy continues to take less. No wonder San Antonio wins for 20 yearsCool. Can we addend this then and agree that Duncan got paid a ton of money and then adjusted after he turned 36? Also, Spurs are a great organization but they hit the jackpot having two hof big men for the past 20+ years on their team.
and the guy continues to take less. No wonder San Antonio wins for 20 years
Thanks Crush appreciate teh kind word. I knwo you didnt mean what you said so its all good. Just wnat to give you a little advice, most of the fans myself included arent bahsing melo, in fact we are happy with melo. However you cant blame people with wanting him to take less because he said he would. Its not an attack on melo its just wanting him to get to the next level as a player and leader. its actually a good thing IMO because the more fans push you the more it will help
Melo taking the advice from Phil seriously is even more important than how much of his money he sacrificed. We need this team to be playing at it's highest level as a team. Phil asking Melo to consider not trying to score every single time he touches the ball his a huge change. It involves trust on Melo's part. Trust of his teammates and of Phil. That is the same thing he had to convince Jordan and once MJ started trusting the system and his teammates they took off. I'm hoping for the same thing here.

We don't have much or a choice. Except If it blows up in our face again we can switch allegiance

Brought this up like 100,000 this past season alone. When it's all about one player other players never get a chance to develop. You can land the number 1 pick in the draft it won't matter. If Tim Duncan was a rookie on the Knicks last year he would've never become Tim Duncan

If Tim Duncan was a rookie on the knicks last year we probably would have won 50 fewer games the prior year. That woulda sucked.

you're misrepresenting reality, aka lying.
duncan had won three titles and when he was 26 he earned 12 million dollars the year he won his first of three finals mvps.
again, by the time he earned 22 million in a season he had already won 3 titles and had earned 3 finals mvps. he led his teams to those titles.
meantime your defense of this greedy, me-first never was is truly moronic and pathetic.
what has carmelo done to actually earn the right to receive almost the entire maximum?
NOTHING

sorry but this is all on melo, unconscionable melo.
all of it.
every last unconscionable cent.
you can try to deflect all you want-- it was dolan, it was walsh, it was jackson-- but melo is the common denominator and has once again taken more than he has ever deserved and hurts the team he plays for in doing so.
it's unconscionable.
just an awful awful situation for the knicks.

Ask Phil Jackson. He wouldn't entertain a sign and trade with the bulls and gave Melo the contract that he signed.
After watching McDermott tonight in Summer League action both Phil and Nuggets may have regret, although Harris may be a gem.
Hoping C-Early can be one himself
I think Phil could have exercised due diligence and entertained S&T offers, to peak Anthony's value. What would the harm be knowing Max contract was always the Trump Card?

Well now we'll get to see if your theory is correct. Can Melo be part of a Team Oriented system and win? Phil has bet it all on Melo being able to fit in his beloved Triangle and thrive. The team will be trained to have the spacing, ball and player movement that is the bedrock of the Triangle and Melo will play the Jordan/Kobe role in that system. It seems Melo is tailor made for that role. It's gonna be very interesting to see develop.
