Forward thinking metric. ON one side it considers Haywood as not improving, while Melo ages

Is Melo's contract worst among 2014 free agents?

By ESPN New York

One metric ranks Carmelo Anthony’s contract as the worst that’s been handed out so far in NBA free agency.

ESPN Insider Tom Haberstroh has a metric to measure the value –- or lack thereof –- of contracts agreed to so far this summer.

He compared the player’s average annual salary to the amount expected based on the player's age and 2013-14 production.

Carmelo’s deal -– worth $124 million over five years -– ranked worst in Haberstroh’s ranking.

Writes Haberstroh:

“According to the metrics, Anthony will be one of the most overpaid players in the game.

Like most, RPM sees Anthony as a below-average player on the defensive end. As such, he needs to be otherworldly on offense to warrant a $125 million commitment. Anthony's a great scorer, but he rated as only the 18th-best offensive player in the league last season. That's probably a bit unkind, but Melo's age and defensive struggles make this contract a dubious one by any estimation.”

Habrestroh ranks Chris Bosh’s deal with Miami and Utah’s deal with Gordon Hayward as the second and third worst of the offseason.

Anthony, for what it’s worth, has an early termination option for the fifth and final year of his contract and also has a no-trade clause.

Question: Do you think Carmelo’s contract is the worst of the free agency season thus far? Or do you think it will work out well for the Knicks?

But without Melo no free agents are coming here and who else is going to score 30 on 30 shots?

most overrated #s in sports.

It was funny hearing all the Harden vs. Melo arguements, and how Morey the Metric king used #s to quickly rebuild the Rockets. Then dumped good players in Parsons, Lin and Asik for literally nothing so he could throw money galore at a shiney overrated Metrics stinker like Melo.

Because Morey, like the other winning teams who tried to throw money at Melo this offsseaon know the reality, that Melo impacts the game much more than the '18th best offensive player.'

You can spin it anyway you want, but the guys who tout these #s were also the first ready to let slip away like a fart in the wind for a chance to sign Mr.#18 lol

Leave it to ESPN to find negativity in anything the knicks do. IF the knicks had the Olympic team roster, they would still find a 100 flaws in it, and would project a 49 win season, base on metrics.

Last year there metrics predicted 37 wins

We won 37 games

and those were off by 20+ wins for about half the other teams. So yea.. they got the KNicks right and were so far off on many of the others whats the point? They were nowhere close the year before either.

Go show me the start of year win totaly predictions. Its a good laugh.

Guns.. whats your issue? You cant believe Phil knows what he's doing unless ESPN says he does?

How about the year before? The predicted far less than 54 wins.

i found this, so yes:

note the date is october 30th. prigioni stepped in to kidd's role and was an unknown. i am not saying he alone accounted for the extra 9.5 wins. i also think the prediction system could not have predicted the tremendous influence kidd had on the team in the earlier part of the season, along with rasheed. remember the knicks went .500 after he and sheed lost the battle to father time.

how much better would they have done had kidd has more left in the tank?

Seriously Melo contract is a marketing campaign.
We have our man to sell jerseys and TV time, celebs magnet, highlights king, drama star, and running body for another star if Zen will get one.
We also reinstated that Dolan has no problem to spend whatever it takes to get whoever he want.
NY star-hungry fans get their man to. So fck the metrics.

it couldnt be as simple as having an elite scorer in the triangle? That couldnt be it?

he isn't elite but the triangle could make him so... if he is coachable, and that remains a huge IF, a 124 million, no-trade, crumbling shoulders, IF

i cited another article that states from a different perspective the issues and concerns. that's not hate, that's contributing to the discussion.

i the asserted that nobody knows whether this huge investment will pay dividends. that's not hate, it's doubt.

you know what hate looks like?

no this is hate... but cool. I know your upset he didnt sign for the $12mm you thought made sense. Its going to be a long year for you

This metric doesn't take into account the effect playing in the Triangle can have on his production. Melo is just about the most perfect player for the Triangle. He's able to post, shoot from anywhere on the floor and is quick enough to get around defenders. His array of skills offensively make him a nightmare in this system. I just don't think people realize how his skills fit this system to a tee.

Melo in the Pinch post will be dominant. Melo in the low post with cutters taking defenders away is murder. He's a dangerous 3pt shooter so that is yet another option. Most of all he'll score easier and more efficiently. He won't have to get killed so much with the way sets are run in the Triangle. Also he'll have help with all the off ball motion. It's not gonna be like we've played in the past.
