He's a good PG and an elite shooter, but his defense is really bad. For this team he's the perfect PG. You need a great shooting PG in the Triangle and he can do that. He can also run an offense and run PnR so basically he's gonna help this team run much more smoothly and efficiently. Think of all those bricks Felton tossed up and his awful PG skills? Jose is lightyears better in terms of PG skills and shooting.
IronWillGiroud @ 7/23/2014 8:14 PM
he's near elite then and for us he feels like he's elite because calderon is the best point guard for knicks since 1991,

11/5/1steal with 2.4 threes on 45%, and his dime numbers were down because of unique year in toronto with the different guards they had drop buckets,

he's like a solid 11 or 12 and 7 or 8 dimes every year and this year with melo, bargs and all these guys, and with them playing the spiritual zen triangle basketball--- don't be shocked at 12/9 with 1.5 steals and 3 treys a game at over 40%

what's the overunder on that?

nixluva @ 7/23/2014 8:23 PM
I just found it funny how some in the media and some fans kind of poo pooed the idea of Jose replacing Felton. It's almost like they think it's only a minor move. This team was held back so much by Felton's putrid PG play. Thing is that in the Triangle it creates open shots for the PG and also the PG doesn't have to work too hard. The idea in the Triangle is for everyone to pass rather quickly. You don't want guys pounding the ball and looking. You want players moving and the ball moving. All the little nuances in the Triangle come from the BB IQ of your players and a smart PG like Jose will raise the level of our play significantly in this system. I'm very happy we have him. In fact I think Prigs and Larkin will also shine in this system. We actually have a very good PG contingent.

Better than Clyde, Stockton, Kidd & Nash put together

oh come on - don't disrespect Calderon like that, you gotta give him his due

nixluva @ 7/23/2014 9:18 PM
All that matters is that he's lightyears better than Felton. One of our biggest problems over the last decade has been poor PG play. Now we have a guy that can run a team. He's not a good defender and we'll have to deal with that, but offensively he's just what we need. Hard to find a better shooting PG and this is an offense that prizes shooting PG's.
arkrud @ 7/23/2014 9:18 PM
Not elite.
How he will play on Knicks is to be seen.
Not sure why speculate. Time will tell.
Do not expect anything special form veteran PG.
Will his contributions on offense compensate his defensive deficiencies is to be seen too.

The defense is the only issue. In terms of his PG skills he's a top PG. In terms of his offensive game, it fits like a glove. He's a better shooter than Derek Fisher who was in this offense for a long time. His effect on the rest of the team should be positive if they can cover for him defensively.

We basically got Calderon and picks for a salary dump
I really don't see a positive some of value in Tyson Chandler and Felton combined, I know Chandler was once DPOY but has fallen far from that since
Maybe he needs a change with a team with more youth/versatile defenders

I like Jason Smith, just not at the deal rumored, we should have at least had a team option for year 2 at a lower deal like 2m unguaranteed

If not there were plenty of vet mins like at the time like Ed Davis and Drew Gooden, Edoh and Dante Cunningham still available
And we still need a 2nd PG, Pablo is a 3rd string PG and while I do like Larkin, I don't like the idea of not having another player that could play PG like Bayless/Nelson *who was available* and Sessions who still
I would try to swing a deal for

Ilyasova
Edoh
Sessions
Possibly even Delfino

and call it a night, it would have been great if we could have added the vet min signing of Jeff Adrien

I still like Shawn Marion despite his age as well
I think James Johnson was a great signing, that would have allowed his to utilize the rest of the money to sign Thiannis to a 3 year deal
James Johnson is 6-9/6-10, 250pds, extremely long reach, decent athleticism, plays tough defense, and has improved his shooting much
IF he can add the baseline 3pt shot to his game with consistency he would be extremely under rated and important to us like how Shawne Williams had a breakout half a season after the Denver trade
With players like Lebron James, Durant, Paul George, players that have G skills and PF size, having a player likes James Johnson is crucial
Also really like Brandon Rush for risk/reward, I know he didn't do much but he was a 6th man candidate prior to him hurting his knee, that is highly efficient with a possible

10pts, 7-8rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 assist, 50% FG, 40% 3pt, all for the VET MIN with the player option for year 2
He is more of G/F, that can play a LEGIT SF role due to his wingspan

adding Brandon Rush and another SF/PF would certainly have a great impact on our DEFENSIVE team and help mentor our picks in Early/Thianisis

I think STAT or AB could be moved by the trade deadline if they come in to play in a contract year and we have success as a team, with their success on a contract year

Also as for

Odom
Shannon Brown
possibly *sign and trade Kmart with early bird rights* to match salaries, I believe he could be an asset with little guaranteed money for Kmart, constructed similar to how Q Rich and Dan Gadzuric were utilized to match salaries

We could have not announced the signing of Jason Smith, while getting rid of these salaries and get some assets, as we trim down our roster
I was hoping Cole Aldrich gets a chance to play 20m + and even the chance to battle Dalembert/AB as the starting Center

Instead we have too many roster spots dedicated to

SG
JR Smith
Tim Hardaway JR
Iman
Ellington
Thiansiss *not signed*

with Calderon likely playing some SG minutes at times as well

and

Center, PF/C

Dalembert
Cole Aldrich

AB
STAT

Jason Smith
Jeremy Tyler

And please do not bring back MWP, we are still paying him part of the MLE from last season
Hopeful to add a SF/PF

PG, PG/SG
===============
Sessions/Mo Williams
Darrius Morris/Tourre Murry

Billups *don't see Detroit picking up his player option*
Peyton Silva/

Jordan Crawford/Shelvin Mack/Daniel Gibson

SF/PF
===========
Shawn Marion
Dante Cunningham

SF
=========
Devin Ebanks
Aminu

Beasley *not if we have JR Smith, though talented, I think we understand why we cannot have too many type of these players*

Nocioni/Turkeglu
Chris Singleton/Jan Vesley
James Singleton

PF/C and Center
======================

Jermaine Oneil

Edoh

Greg Stimensa

Andris Biedrins

OK4, Greg Oden, Bynum *all unguaranteed contracts and to let them rehabilitate, preferably holding a player option to year to on a vet min deal*

Speculate because we know before and with new situation we can make a strong guess and pick him for fantasy league

RonRon @ 7/23/2014 10:14 PM
He is a very solid player, we have added some fresh young legs to go with him
A good starting PG is in the range of 10-12m, Dragic will be seeking a similar contract after he forgoes his player option for 2015/16

Hope CA adds to the PnR game and POST GAME, similar to Dirk, without the needs to generate points or stats every time, instead trusting the team with ball movement
Calderon does get back AB, who I think gave much effort last season compared to his past seasons in Toronto

I am pretty sure Davis, Gooden, and James Johnson have signed and are off the market. I like the idea of bringing Shawne in as a training camp invite. He played well last season and I don't believe he had any off court incidents.
Dagger @ 7/23/2014 11:25 PM
Not as elite as Raymond Felton, Ray's in a weight class of his own
tkf @ 7/23/2014 11:54 PM
OF COURSE HE IS ELITE!!!! We had to trade another elite PG in felton to get him.. DUhhhhhhh...

He is a good point guard but winning the Atlantic? 2 teams I fear and that is Charlotte and the Wizards. They are young fast and aggressive.
