It's not that people are saying Acy is a great defensive player, but rather that as a reserve he brings a high energy level and the ability to play multiple positions. We've never seen Tyler have multiple games where he displayed the kind of manic effort that Acy is prone to having. I think that's what excites people and the Knicks brass. Here's a guy that may not get many minutes but if you put him in there he's liable to play very hard and try to make the most of those minutes. He just might provide a spark for the team and that has value.

My original post is just out of frustration because it seems like some fans would rather have that highlight guy like Acy as opposed to Tyler who brings a ton of energy and mainly possesses the basketball IQ at least defensively that many players in this era simply don't have. Sometimes I don't know what game everyone else is watching. The best defenses don't allow the ball to get to the middle or inside and don't lose their man off ball. Tyler did a great job of that which is somewhat rare today, particularly for a big. I'm not an expert on Acy but my money is on Tyler over the highlight reel blocks and dunks Acy gets you.

Maybe I am missing Tyler displaying his defensive IQ. It seems like he just picks up fouls really quickly when he is on the court. Tyler has been waived three times. The Knicks have had him around for over a year. My guess is there is something about him they are aware of, he seemed to have conditioning issues at the start of summer league, that made him expendable.

He's maybe a bit over aggressive but most bigs today just stand in the paint and occasionally block or alter a shot which doesn't stop opposing pg's from strolling down the lane and breaking down defenses. Tyler isn't afraid to come out on the perimeter. He helps and recovers whether it's a pick and roll or a cross screen he's in position. Most guards are now taught to ice near every high pick and roll because it's rare to find a big who consistently is out there. That in turn opens up the pocket pass and the pick and pop which teams are forced to live with. That and the barrage of floor spacers in the league today are a big part of why dominant defenses rarely exist anymore.

Having so called "anchors" like Tyson only does so much. Felton got exposed more than anybody because of this and he may not have looked as horrific if there was proper help. I was holding out hope that with Tyson gone Tyler might actually get some decent minutes, but oh well. Let's see what Acy brings.

Very difficult to believe that you are being serious here. In the event that you are, you must know more than most basketball executives and coaches who have continually buried such a defensive stalwart on the end of the bench, that is when they are not busy cutting him. Seriously, Tyler has some really nice potential in terms of his physical abilities. He has not put it together yet to become a consistent player, perhaps he just has not found the right opportunity or team, or perhaps he does not work hard enough or perhaps it is another reason.......time will tell. If he is cut by the Kings, that will not be a positive start.

Tyler has low basketball IQ..we were all reminded of that during those summer league highlight dunks he allowed on defense. Dont just look at the 1 or 2 blocks he sent into the stands...If you look at some of the replays, you usually see Tyler ushering someone to the rim. He can't guard any pick and roll play because of his lack of lateral movement and slow feet. He plays like he's 400 lbs.....He will be nice once his game matures and he becomes a student of the game instead of relying on his natural talent. Basketball is more than just a mid range jumper. I'm still a Tyler fan, don't get me wrong...but I'm not crying about his departure when you have a player like Acy who's the same age taking his minutes. And both guys are not only the end of bench players but also 1 foot out of the league. In Tylers case it's more like a foot and a half.

Quincy Acy’s perimeter game. Sacramento has until late July to make a decision on the forward’s 2014-15 non-guaranteed contract. If he makes the team, he has the potential to stretch the defense with solid range from the baseline three and a nice 18-20-foot jumper from the elbow.

I have been a big Tyler fan since the first time I saw him in Summer League because of his physical gifts and productivity on offense against lower tier competition. I saw Tyler as a project that could yield big returns if he somehow paired his skills with real savvy and dedication to system basketball. He is the kind of guy that looks like a potential superstar in 1on1 games but frustratingly ineffective in a 5on5 game. He reminds me a lot of Anthony Randolph who I also really liked but has never stuck with a team long term for a reason. Just like blk said... High skills, but low basketball IQ.

The triangle offense requires players to play a more cerebral game than most other systems and I don't think Tyler was up to that challenge. This team is soooo much more balanced than last year. Tyler could have been useful if we still had over-simplistic offensive schemes that challenged the limits of our prior coach's capacity. We will be operating at a much higher level now and will require players that can understand their roles in these new schemes... I am celebrating how far we have come in such a short period of time from a management and coaching perspective. This season cannot come soon enough.

I agree. I hope the Knicks find away to open up a roster spot for Thanasis. Even if he spends the year in Westchester I hope the team finds a way to keep him around. I believe if he can only make $25,000 in the d league if he isn't there with an nba contract.

Seriously. I know that Acy in the mix (Travis Outlaw really) complicates adding Thanasis to the 15-man but we need to hatch out a plan to keep him in the fold somehow. We drafted this kid -- the last thing I wanna see is him becoming an unrestricted FA where someone else scoops him up. We might be OK asking him to play for our DL team but we'd be rolling the dice -- if he doesn't make the roster my understanding is he becomes an UFA. We could proceed with him in our DL affiliate but then any team could come along and offer him a contract...This kid probably goes undrafted so the likelihood of some team scooping him up right away as an UFA would probably be low but still, you never know. Maybe there was a team(s) that did like him between 52-60... If anything, look to move him while we still have his rights -- package him in a 2 for 1 deal along with Pablo to get another young PG: Pablo/Thanasis to Utah for Ian Clark; Pablo/Thanasis to Memphis for Nick Calathes, something like that maybe. Better than cutting him loose. Wasted draft pick if that happens.

The guy was thought to be a bit of a project so I can't imagine his agent holding us hostage to put him on the team. Worst case is Thanasis gets a contract overseas and we still retain his rights. He gets his money and we get him to advance at no expense. This is standard. No way do I see him accepting a D league contract, not even in the realm of possibilities. He is not walking away from decent money overseas.

Hopefully somebody with a good idea of the rules regarding rights and such can jump in here. I did see it mentioned on RealGM though.

That article is written quite vaguely which is what is causing the confusion. THe issue is if Thanassis signs a contract or tender offer with the Knicks. If he signs and a contract and doesn't make the team, than he gets waived and becomes a free agent.

If he doesn't sign a contract, he's free to go overseas and the Knicks retain his rights. I don't believe he can sign with the D-League however- he has to sign somewhere outside the NBA. He also cannot attend training camp with the Knicks. Ultimately this is what's probably gonna happen.

Thanks for clearing that up...OK, so I trust the Knicks will make the best decision for all. If he doesn't sign a contract, goes overseas for a yr to make some real money and we retain his rights -- as of right now, that's the move that'll be in everyone's best interest. Hopefully Thanasis and his agent see it that way and agree to be patient for the time being. Anything can happen too btw -- a guy like Outlaw may go down, we may get thin out on the wing along the way, etc.. Maybe we do wind up signing him this yr at some point.

Was thinking the same thing -- that's why I got confused when I read that Thanasis article. I think he could. Obviously wouldn't be as lucrative....I'll defer to VDesai here though.

Reading through it, it does sound like Pierre's rights were kept by New Orleans. The key is he never signed or attended training camp or signed a contract. You are right that if he stays in the DLeague he'd be making $25K vs. making like $1mm in Europe. D League would be better for a player that is under contract with an NBA team. That player counts towards a roster spot and gets paid an NBA salary. For someone without an NBA contract, it really makes no sense to go to the DLeague instead of Europe. The money difference is humongous.
