We have till tommorow to exercise. I would exercise it- this kid has great potential at PG and is a steals machine. At the very least he is a change of pace point guard and useful rotation guy. We don't save that much money by not keeping him- I can't see us replacing him that simply with the same amount of money or less.
I wanted us to draft this kid and was ecstatic that we ended up getting him. He really has toughed it out and showed he has potential. This is how this kid played in college so it's good to see him adjusting to the level and starting to really grow.
I don't really understand why you wouldn't exercise the option - I mean are you really saving that much vs. what the cap hold is for the typical fill in min veteran type deal?
And with the cap projected to rise significantly, I see any move not to exercise his option as foolish.
I haven't seen this guy play but going on number of posts on him we should extend
I am not sure it matters. 1.67 is not that much for a player but unless he just blows up how much would he get on the open market? The knicks have his EB rights so they can still pay him over $2M+ while being able to go over the cap. I guess the risk of him blowing up is possible not blowing up like an all star but becoming a legit 4-5M type player. I think I would pick up his option hope he plays big these 2-3 weeks then ship him and JR/THjr somewhere to get another player.
$1.4mil is too much money!!!!!
Pick it up. It would be an easy contract to trade and isn't much of a risk.

Agreed. It's for slightly under $1.7mm.. Youth, ability, athleticism, speed & upside all make it a small calculated gamble worth taking. You're right--a small contract like this could always be moved later if need be. The kid's starting to play better now. Calderon's out for 2-3 weeks -- you're never supposed to lose your job to injury but I gotta question--is it really Jose's to lose? He and Larkin are both new, coming in the same off-season trade... During this next couple of weeks, if Shane keeps making progress, maybe he keeps his starting spot and we keep building with him.
Phil would be dumb to decline the option
Stay the course, do not knee jerk into a signing
Larkin needs to EARN his pay day
Playing 1 good game doesn't justify making a rash decision

its not a lot of money. If he plays wells and we want to keep him some other team may overpay him. 1.7 million is nothing

There's no time to make anyone "earn" anything. You literally have to make the decision in like 6 hours. Given its $1.7mm in the grand scheme of the NBA that's not a lot to earn. The savings on the cap vs. the cap hold is about $1.1mm.

There is time, you make him prove he's a lock backup
And if that's the case Melo should have kept his $1.4mil
This is about principle, start making players earn their keep
Had we got blown out yesterday and he played so-so not sure this thread is created
Case in point who would of thunk
Travis Wear would guard Lebron and have success
Heck I'm pretty sure 99% of us never thought he'd get into a game until
Possibly a quarter of the way into the season
Exercising the option is a no-brainer. You take the option and if Larkin improves you now have a cheap solid backup/starting pg. If Larkin does not improve,we still can trade him to get his salary off the team. All Larkin needs to do is cut down on the turnovers and consistently hit his open shots, and he will be a solid backup pg. The guy had 5 steals yesterday, and he can do that every game with his quickness.

Good points. I concur.

So in short we could always replace him
With Sebastian Telfair if need be
A guy who was out of the league for like 2yrs
And is now starting for the once potent OKC Thunder
What you do is wait and you trade him this year, if needed
As he will have more value without the salary locked in
Teams may be willing to give up something knowing
We're not pawning off nearly $2mil guaranteed to them
Anything can happen from now until game 82
Look no further than the Thunder

exactly. Larkin is still a work in progress but the upside is there especially for cheap
1.67 is not that bad plus they can always use the stretch provision on him which would only be ~557k towards the cap over 3 years.

There's no time there's literally a deadline today. If you wait and he plays well he'll make 5 or 6 times the club option. Its better to pick up the option, because if he sucks, he only costs you an extra 1.1mm
