Personally i hope JR opts out, however i doubt anybody wll offer jr more than is player option salary so he might opt in. When he became a free agent last time he probably expected somebody to offer him 8-10 million per year and nobody did
Copeland doesn't help us unless he is going to play power fwd. He could definitely excel in the triangle tho. If Indiana wanted to do it I'd be happy but they already solved their sorting guard problems for now
I also think Copeland has the skills and mindset for the triangle and he has been productive lately. Not gonna happen though
According to a source, Jackson has no plans to make any deals until Dec. 15 — a key NBA date as 2014 free-agent signees and 2014 draft picks are eligible to be traded.

But Phil would still offload JR if he could before the 15th if the opportunity was there me thinks. It is all about max flexibility for next summer.
I think he needs to give jR some time in this triangle, he's going to become a key piece in our system, watch and see.
We have a log jam at PF anyway, so i'm not sure this trade even makes sense, there aren't that many quality SG in the league as it is, and at the end of this season, will be have just THJ.

I think Phil was smart about this. Right now I'd take Cope over JR. But by the deadline hopefully JR gets his act together. JR at his best is more important than Cope

he's completely suspect on D, knows nothing about the triangle, he would have no future in NY beyond this season.

I see no particular reason to bring Cope back. If JR is productive under Fish, he will probably have more impact than Cope would.
But if this is about dumping his contact for next season, then I'm OK with that too. Much as I may sometimes appreciate a well-behaved, effective JR, I would rather build a team without him. He's still prone to dipchit nonsense and I would not be sorry to see him gone either.
And don't forget, Cope has very beautifully kept dreds.

I just don't like the "donnie Walsh" approach, making trades for the sake of dumping contracts. I would only make a trade like that if it's the dead line, we are well below 500and the playoffs are a pipe dream.
We only know this "rumor" because Phil wants you to know.
One move can beget another so the how the dominoes are lined up is a mystery to us.

That was what Walsh was hired to do though in advance of the Lesbron sweepstakes. Myself, I'm sick of seeing picks thrown away and that was often the price of salary dumps. That's something I'd like to see an end of.
JR is dynamic and can excel in the triangle. He's also relatively cheap. THJ isn't ready for full time duty yet but maybe that changes this year. Thj/shump/JR is too much, one of them has to go, preferably jr or shump.
I would've done this deal. I wonder if Donald Sloan would've been a part of it (I like the look of that kid)? Would've freed up that much more money for this summer. Take it to the bank -- there's no way JR is leaving $6-7mm on the table. Nobody's giving this clown that type of money. He's nuts if he doesn't take his player option...From the look of it, Phil tried very hard to unload this guy and couldn't, not even for Chris Copeland and not even to a team that lost a Paul George and Lance Stephenson...Unloading JR would've had a positive effect all-around: it would've freed up a good chuck of cap space; it would've ensured shump and THJ got enough time (Timmy's not getting a lot of time now); we probably would've picked up Shane Larkin's 3rd year (still can't believe they didn't the more I think about it); it would've made it that much easier to bring shump back eventually.
Still, I like the place we're in right now with our cap when you think about it, even with JR still on the books. Maybe Phil really has his eye on 2016 FA and elects to load up on a bunch of 1-yr deals this summer. He'll have that option and he'll have the cap flexibility to be very competitive with those 1-yr offers -- he'll be able to overpay in order to get the guys he wants in that tier of players. One way of looking at what he might do.. Maybe that's the way to go...Only thing - you'd hate to wait yet another year with Melo as far as putting together a top team goes. This guy's window won't be open forever. Kinda need to expedite the process as much as possible to ensure we still have Melo at the top of his game..

Agreed. If you can dump JR without their being a collateral damage, you dump JR. We could do much more with $6 million of cap space than we can with him under contract. The only negative to all of this is that it sounds as though the Pacers are uninterested in a firesale of their roster. We could use their players to put us into the fray of Eastern Conference contenders.
If not, I like yellowboy's idea of signing Tobias Harris and grooming him to be the new David West. The kid has got game but I'm still skeptical that Orlando let's him walk, even if we overpay. Rob Hennigan ain't no fool and seems to understand talent.

I am not so sure he is a PF anymore. He looks like he has shed some weight. For the right price I'd still like him though as the six man. I live in FL so I get to see a lot of Orl so I'll continue to keep my I on him.
