Giving the money already invested in Carmelo, also given the amount of players needed, we can't afford to offer Gasol what he truly deserves. He is a hell of a player, but I don't believe he WILL ever want to come to NY.
We should trade for Monroe right now, draft another big and a couple of shooters, and attract some cheaper FAs to fill the bench. I still think it would be wise to pursue a trade for Stephenson, because this dude could potentially help put us over the top in the right environment.
Trade Amare or Bargnani's expiring contract to Detroit for Monroe. Because they have a couple of albatross contracts and they may be looking to save money.
Find a way to offer Jordan a desirable player for STEPHENSON.
With the attention that has to be given to Carmelo, we need a slasher like Stephenson to attack the basket. He and Monroe are excellent rebounders at their position; they would drastically improve this team at all position.
If The Pistons wanted to trade Greg Monroe, which they probably don't, there must be 20 other teams they would trade him to before they took our garbage, expiring or not.

They will not pay him the money he wants either. The city is broke, and the front office/owner is cheap as hell. They will let him walk next season for nothing. Offer them JR and Bargnani for Monroe, Jennings, and a second round pick
pass on monroe ... he will be grossly overpaid
mreinman wrote:pass on monroe ... he will be grossly overpaid
Seriously dude?????? He passes the ball for a big, rebounds as well as any bigs, scores the ball, and block shots. The last time we had a 6'11" big with those skills from Georgetown, we were a relevant squad

how about blocks, turnovers and shooting percentages? PAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS
you want to max this guy???

Not max him out, 5 years $11 million per

You know Gasol personally???? Why highlight "WILL"???
YOu got this all figure out but pretty abstract. "couple of cheap FA's to fill out the roster"......."Draft a big and some shooters"........"Find a away to get STEPHANSON".......
All in the name of "NOW"!!!!!
So you think a core of Melo-Monroe-Jennings is how we should use our expirings?
At 4-16 I think the playoffs are out of reach even if you make that deal. Then you devalue our pick which means we really don't draft a stud.
I don't want Jennings, but really its Phil's decision right?
BTW, Detroit is a broke ass city but the owner is not. He is not stupid, he has a new president and coach in place and I doubt he is freaking out over the first 20 games and in panic mode.
You not not taking any favors frm them unless your talking about taking on Josh Smith as well. YOu want him?
Great thread. Very well thought out.

Why would GASOL who can get the same offer form his current team leave a perfect situation to come to a shizznit hole like NY?
I think it's a safe bet that Monroe will be a Knick next year. I'm not sure if trading for him now would be a good idea though. He might help us win games, which is the last thing we need to do right now.
Instead of trading for Monroe, I'd be much more interested in seeing what it would take for us to get their pick for this year. I'd even be willing to give them Amare and take back Josh Smith to make it happen. Most people's gut reaction is that "no way this could happen. We're ripping the Pistons off!". You'd be right. But the same people running the Pistons (Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith) are the same people that thought trading Marcin Gortat, Vince Carter AND A FIRST ROUND PICK for Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu was a good idea. They'd also be the same people that thought paying Gilbert Arenas $23 million per year for 2 years was a solid move. Let's also not forget the brilliant decision to lock a washed up Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson for 3 years each. So where there are idiots, there is a potential fleecing!

No he doesn't block shots (he's never averaged more than .7 blocks a game in his career--this season? .2 blocks a game). He is a minus defender and does not protect the rim at all which is pretty important quality for a PF.
Can the Knicks, FOR FREAKING ONCE, get a rugged PF and/or C who plays frikking DEFENSE and swats shots!!? I'm so tired of the Bargs and Amares and these finesse forwards and centers who don't play D. Enough!
Monroe is a decent player. As you said good scorer and rebounder and can pass. But he wants the max and he is _not_ worth that IMO. And he can reject any trade since he's on a one year qualifying offer from Detroit, too. Plus, the thought of taking back Detroits garbage makes by butthole pucker. Josh Smith, Jennings, etc. Those are guys who are pure losers who will come to NY and play like complete aholes ala JR. NO THANKS! Josh Smith heaving midrange shots is the stuff
Of NBA night terrors. And their contracts are beyond atrocious. Barf.

Another neglected piece of this conversation when talking salaries is that after 2016 the cap should go WAY up! So what the Knicks pay a player will be far less relevant. In addition, I do think they will push for some sort of tax adjust cap system it is kind of a joke that the big market teams aren't really relevant under the current model in FA. Financially it doesn't make sense for the players unless they are resigning.

do you believe the owners, who have raked the NBAPA over the coals the past 2 cba's, are going to allow for a massive cap increase??
they will lock'em out waaay before that i suspect.
if it goes up, it will be in small increments over a set amount of years -- my guess based on the owner/pa dynamic to date
ATTENTION: Trade Thread Proposal Makers
WE ARE NOT GETTING
ANYONE OF HIGH VALUE
IN A TRADE THIS YEAR. We have jackchit to offer. Anything we get will be of minimal value.
The best we can hope for is maybe a 2nd round draft position. Even that would be fortunate. We'd probably have to buy one of those on the open market for $2M like we have done before.
But we are not getting a star or a high quality starter in a trade this season. Will not happen.

We have to stop being sensitive and trade Shump and Amare since he is producing a little.

Agreed. I don't think anyone is off limits incuding Melo if a bona fide deal came along. Tank, get the best player in the draft and rebuild. Not that I think a Melo deal is at all likely, but I don't think this roster is untouchable, even him. Not that management sees it that way, but outside of Melo I'd imagine they'd entertain any offer that nets them something that assists in rebuilding. This looks like a total gut job at this point.
Monroe is one of the worst defensive bigs in the league. Hard pass.

So you'd pass on a top 3 pick because of an icky $14 million/yr contract?
