Knicks · Berman posted that we have no chance at Gasol (page 1)
I would agree 100%. And I would have wished they had passed on Amar'e back when they lost out on LeBron.
Also- rather than go for the big fish, they should see what young players are out there that might be undervalued and ready to break out and become solid role players.
I'd be happy if our rebuild was Melo, top 4 pick & a bunch of impact role players.

Just because a writer puts it out there its not more valid than anything we have come to conclude.
Free agency is always a low % starphuch to expect a player to move. Bottom line is Gasol can do a 4 years deal with another team, opt out after two and then sign for another 5. In effect, he'll get that "lost year" back.
Memphis can rebuild around him, and other teams can make a big push. A team like Philly can do a sign and trade and perhaps offer Noe and another piece with cap space anyway. That gets Gasol his extra year.
Durant is the big fish the year after and if we have space it will be a big story for a year. OKC will try to trade him if they can't resign him.
Bottom line is to be prepared for what can happen and perhaps something falls into place. As long as we do that Im happy. I can life with the uncertainty of it all. Most fans can't.
Berman says we have no chance? He really did not site any facts that most could not see. Memphis is kicking ass and the town has been home for a long time.
Its all good but I'm sure visits to his big bro in malibu might have some effect on him. Chilling on the beach the morning after a game before practice would be a pretty sweet life. Same for Miami. Memphis in the winter is not Malibu is it??
Berman, like most writers have to regurgitate the same crap to keep eye on them. Isola is the worst.
Im not predicting anything and we all know the odds are low for a player to move against the financial advantage of the home team.
The true genius of Phil would be to draft a stud, but use the cap space on players whom we have to overpay to pry away from their teams, but the triangle enhances their on court expectations and thus they become upside surprises. Maybe Teletovic is such a player, at 28 years old hitting his prime? A guy like that. Perhaps a Larry Brown "the right way" kind of team where we get a big in the draft to play off of Melo and surrounded by system guys.
Also consider that if we bomb out of any plan this year I could see that Melo and Phil could have an understanding then he gets traded and we reboot with plan "B". Melo could still fetch a nice return and we get out from one monster contract. One can go on and on with contingent plans like a chess game. Fans and media will label it one thing, but the reality is what stares you in the face.
Life is as such. Blame is a negative energy thats useless. Many things have to come together (Luck)but when it does not people that plan ahead have thought it thru and apply energy in other ways then to stew in "Blame". Teams plan on stars missing games thru the season and prepare accordingly.
My take is when we wiffed on Lebron the organizational plan as always was chaos. That was Dolans house he ran. If Amare was plan "B" I can't see it being in Walsh's history of team construction in Indy that is a go to move of his. But it was within Dolans Starhuch process.
I can see Phil going after Marc, as he went after Pau. Pau was never coming here but you try and explore. A good exec plans well, even when he fails.
Failure is part of all processes.

BRIGGS only said he hopes they don't spend the money & waste Cap room/years just for the sake of spending it & that makes sense.
Down as I am on this team, they'll never be the Mets - The Wilpons have no business owning a team. I don't know what to say about The Islanders but it is about damn time they showed a pulse!.
This salary cap thing is a real fukking nuisance!

I think Phil is looking for a Houston, Childs, LJ makeover. Not sure if that is possible and it wouldn't be the first time players have used tge Knicks as a tool to get more money if you think NYC is going to be seen as an undesireable place. Hopefully Phil can make it work.

Looking over the 2015 free agents I think a best case, realistic scenario is maxing out either Jimmy Butler Reggie Jackson and andsing the rest of our space on maybe Tobias Harris. Our starting lineup for the next season would be Calderon-Butler-Harris-Melo-lottery big man X.

I doubt Jackson gets the max but Butler will. Chicago won't let Butler go they will play him like they did Deng because they know that his is a trade asset because of his defense regardless if his offense goes into the tank.
I would love that line up though. 4 players on the floor that can shoot, score, and dribble. $ players that can run the weak side PnR.

I have no interest in Jackson at the price he'd command. Butler is a really tough call. He's always been good but he raised his game so much in a contract year. If he keeps this up all season, I'd take the max contract gamble on him.

The kid is progressing. I really have not followed them too much this year and can't tell you why they are .500 and not better. Caught them once or twice on national TV but Im really not watching too many games. Im in the Carolinas and usually go see the knicks when in town but really not captivated to go in person. I'd rather see them in the Garden.
I was in NYC before thanksgiving but the wedding I went to was the same nite they played the 76ers. Its a lot cheaper to see them in Charlotte but just was not into the drive. Im about 90 minutes from the arena there. Three hours of driving for a 2 hour game? Turned out to be a good comeback for the knicks and it would have been a fun game to see. Seven o'clock start so I'd really have to give two hours to get there with weekend traffic. I like the idea of taking a room at hotel next door and make a nite of it but quite frankly Mrs Nalod is not all that into it and most of my friends are not that into pro hoop. Decent tickets and hotel room with a nice dinner is still gonna be $600-700 plus.

I love that lineup but as others have said, Butler and Harris are restricted free agents who will likely get the max from their current teams. However, I think there is an odds-on chance that we can pry Reggie Jackson from OKC (assuming he isn't dealt at the deadline). The Thunder have had a history of being uberly cheap and I doubt they pay Reggie Jackson 8 figures when they balked at doing the same for James Harden. Plus, Reggie wants a starting role and we're one of the few teams with cap space who don't have a starting PG that is notably better. He'll definitely be a Knick if we go the cap route, as will Greg Monroe. It doesn't tickle my fancy but would be an improvement over the mess we are now seeing.
I also think there is a possibility we bring in Aaron Afflalo and/or Wilson Chandler, depending on what they set that cap at. Again, nothing to make me do backflips for but it is an improvement, especially with a lottery pick in tow.
