Knicks · The David Robinson Strategy: Shut Melo Down, See You Next Season (page 1)

misterearl @ 12/12/2014 11:11 AM
Five Simple Steps

1. The knee will only deteriorate with the schedule. Have surgery now and set the always reliable Way Forward Machine for training camp

2. Give Andrea Bargnani an ultimatum. Shape up or be shipped out. No excuses.

3. Draft the best player available.

4. Acquire the best free agent available.

5. Make Melo the best sixth man in NBA history.

holfresh @ 12/12/2014 11:36 AM
So simple, it genius..I have been saying that all along but that's not the way the Knicks do things..Melo played 40+ minutes two games following back spasms..Then played the entire first quarter of the next game on a bad knee..And these are the ""smart"" guys we are trusting to have a plan...It's just comical..
misterearl @ 12/12/2014 11:41 AM
holfresh - we both know that if being deployed as sixth man was good enough for John freakin Havlicek (or Latrell freakin Sprewell for that matter), it is good enough for Carmelo freakin Anthony.

If Melo is about winning as much as he claims, he will check his ego with the valet and embrace the concept of the team.

The minute Melo reports to the scorers table (at the eight minute mark) the crowd goes wild. At home or on the road.

Nalod @ 12/12/2014 11:45 AM
Melo has proven durable and when you pay a guy that kind of money you get your arse on the court, hang 30 pts, entertain 19,000 people and try to win the game.

What is the knee problem? Can we really yell to have surgery?

I basically am ok with some faux "shut down" but the reality is he is paid to perform, he wants to pad those stats, finish a career strong and make his arguement for the BASKETBALL HOF, which since he has an MVP for his NCAA run makes him a pretty good candidate. My concern is not his career trajectory and legacy, but his "KNICK" legacy!!!!

Melo is Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter. Guys who entertined and put up a lot of points but were the focal points of their offense, max money players who defended their Max money status. Not all are d-bags like Marbury was but when your pulling in 20mil a year, its has to be intoxicationg.

Phil I think is "taming the shrew" with Melo. How it ends? I don't know.

I basically applaud any deliberate or accidental tank job that nets us a franchise player.

holfresh @ 12/12/2014 11:51 AM
There is no point in running the guy into the ground as a first year coach is getting his sea legs and he is in deep, deep oceans...This is about Knick legacy and not Melo legacy...We try to woo two new cats next year to run with Melo...Saw someone posted Aldridge and Khawi Leonard..Sounds like a plan to me...
Nalod @ 12/12/2014 12:08 PM
Khawi max money is what its going to take to woo him. SAS usually sells consistancy, continuety, being in a one sport town (San Antoine a nice place), Friendly Texas taxes, and Popovitch "System" which gets role players to perform.

I too believe this is what Phil is trying to do with the Triangle (system) implimentation. Krause had done well getting Phil his players to run his team beyond Jordan and Pippen. Lets be real, They were HOF greats but if you don't fill that roster out it would not have happend!!!

Leonard is a restricted Free agent and I can't see SAS letting this guy go.

There's no way that SAS lets Kawhi go for any amount of money. There have been multiple reports that SAS believes Duncan and Manu will retire at the end of this season. If that happens, SAS will have a ton of cap space. Signing Kawhi now would eliminate that space so they want to make a splash in free agency and then resign Kawhi to a max deal.

Yeah he is restricted..Didn't know that looking at HoopsHype..I think max for him is like 16ish, much like Haywood in Utah..Does SA want to touch that kind of number, I'll test that if I was Phil knowing how Pop and Phil "love" each other...Manu makes 7 mil per and Parker gets 13.4 this year...Duncan will re-up as well for not more than 10 mil...

I agree we should rest melo / get the best draft pick we can/ sign a Stud free agent / BUT to say Melo should be 6th man is insane.

helloharv - the rationale for making Melo sixth man is the same with Havlicek.

1. Preserve his knees. Havlicek played at full speed The Celtics were wise to monitor his minutes as he aged. They also won.

2. Melo will be pushing 32. His experience allows him to enter a game a contribute what it needs, not simply scoring.

3. The issue of running a democratic offense is taken off the table. Seven dudes in double figures plaese.

4. Defensively, the Knicks deploy a dominant POWER forward who can muscle inside for points a rebounds... and a gazelle small forward to set the tempo with outside offense and aggressive defense. Melo at 32-33 will be allowed to pick his spots.

5. Ego adjustment. There is no stigma to being sixth man if you win a ring. Perhaps his legacy as a team player is enhanced. The meme becomes him sacrificing for the good of the team. The team elder.

helloharv - The Answer Man enjoys your writing. Your turn, what is your rationale against this ridiculous idea....?

Need a team to be 6th man on though, much as it is a novel and intriguing thought

I don't see him leaving there, especially for NY- he said he's a very low key guy and does not seem to crave the spotlight or media attention at all. Spurs are the perfect place for him

He is a workhorse -- he wants to play -- he needs HELP ! We have a pathetic roster with not much talent. Get him M. Gasol or Leonard next year to HELP him. He has never had a Robin to his Batman.

If we rest him this year kinda like D Wade last year , it will actually prolong his prime which is NOW , no need for a top 5 player in the NBA to be a 6th man. That is silly. Imagine telling Jordan or Kobe to be 6th man at age 32

You think Melo is a top 5 player so you telling anyone else their thoughts are silly is amusing.

When he had a robin, Billups, he went to the western conference finals. Billups was just at the tail end of his prime.

Melo can be a solid number 2.

Melo needs a veteran HOF type PG to be successful. Someone to tell him to pipe down and behave.

Ironically, he was at his best with old billups and old kidd.
