Knicks · Are the Rockets going to push for a Melo trade at the deadline? (page 1)

smackeddog @ 12/20/2014 11:38 AM
Hmm- Morey's recent moves have me wondering whether he's going to try and push for a Melo trade at the deadline. The reason he traded his exemption now was so that players he acquired will become eligible to be traded before the deadline. He has taken on:

Shved $3.1mil (a QO for next season)
Brewer $4.7mil (I think he plans to keep him as a back up.

In addition, he has these salaries to trade:

Ariza $8.6mil (has played in the triangle before)
Kostas Papanikolaou $4.7mil, TO next season (perfect skill set for the triangle- AND should have been ours but we traded his draft rights for Felton)
Jet $5.45mil (expiring)

So the salaries can be easily matched up (Melo is on $22.5mil)

They have nice cheap players, they have this years Pelicans pick (top 3 protected), they have all of their own first rounders after this year, and they have a tonne of second rounders.

Morey seems to be desperate to land a 3rd star (even if it makes no sense Metrics wise)- it seems any third star will do- he was interested in Melo in the offseason, and perhaps losing out once again on a star (Rondo) will motivate him to land Melo more (I don't care what their record says, the Rockets aren't on the same levelas Warriors, Griz, Spurs, healthy OKC and possibly the Mavs come playoff time). Personally I think Melo would be an awful fit there, but for some reason he wanted him on that team. Maybe by the deadline Melo is so dejected he agrees to be moved to Houston.

So what do you think? Would a Rockets trade appeal to you?

good thread. i love melo, i don't want to see him go, but at this point, it's probably better off for both parties that we trade him. if we could get the pelicans pick and other 1st rounders, along with papanikalou, i think you have to consider the trade a win for both teams. after the mavs for rondo, you would think that the rockets are feeling the heat and want to do something. i'd do this. gives us a better chance at rebuilding and hopefully we can compile a couple other 1st round picks too.

No.

I'm leaning towards yes. The small fwd position is the most talented position next to point guard...we might need to think about investing some money in another position...Melo would need to waive the no trade clause though. It's an interesting thought

Morey definitely loaded up on salary for deadline trade purposes (otherwise why trade for Shved yesterday?). Rockets are the only winning team that have shown interest in Melo AND could easily make the numbers match. Would Melo agree? Who knows- he's definitely having second thoughts, and if he's smart he can see we are several years away from contending. Next season will be a struggle just to get to the playoffs.

I like the idea of the Rockets as trade partners just because of their draft picks (that Pelicans one is guaranteed to be 3-20, which BRIGGs would love), young cheap players (I know we wouldn't get both picks and the young players, but we should be able to get one of the two) and even the salary match players could be good fits for us (I like Ariza and it would be very useful to have a player who's actually played in and had success with the triangle before).

Those picks are assumed all for the taking? All those players, all those picks!!!!!

Morey is giving himself the opportunity to be flexible.

He is, but he's not afraid to try and use them to land a star (see the Harden trade), something he's become oddly fixated on lately. Of course the key thing with him is he likes to look like the clear winner in every trade, so unlike us, he ain't going to go wild with offerings. In fact I'm doubtful he even offers the Pelican pick (if that was up for grabs, wouldn't he have offered it to the Celtics for Rondo- it's guaranteed to be higher than the Mavs pick so they would have been fools not to accept it).

You look at the Rockets players and picks and its confusing how he managed to fail to outdo the Mavs in regards to the Rondo trade, unless he didn't really want him in the first place.

Can this happen before Christmas?

Melo, Harden and D12 on the same team. That is a pretty unlikeable trio. It would be interesting to see how it worked.

Unfortunately not- there will be no early christmas presents for you this year. The players Morey just traded for are not eligible to be re-traded until the deadline

I don't get how Melo and Harden would work at all, but what was bizarre was that the infamous metrics GM seemed to think it could back in the offseason. Team chemistry would also be toxic.

Harden is a natural facilitator. Melo wants to score. Dwight wants the pressure taken off him inside. It's a good place to be for Melo.

The west is stacked though. Clippers, warriors, Dallas, okc, Memphis....

EnySpree @ 12/20/2014 12:32 PM
Ariza, Kostas, Alexey..... Terry expiring plus a high draft pick? That would be Christmas for knick fans.

Our foundation would be Ariza, THJr... and cap space like a motherfucker. We could really begin to build something real here for once

TPercy @ 12/20/2014 12:32 PM
I love melo too but I mean think of two first round picks, couple starters...perfect for moving forward. Then we can draft a conerstone player HOPEFULLY and I mean HOPEFULLY, sign an all star caliber player who isnt a raging asshole and we are moving in the right direction. I can dream on though

I like Melo, but I think he (and most people) overestimated the speed of the rebuild. I think he (and so did I) thought this season we might compete for the 8th spot, and would solidify a group of support players who can play the triangle, and then next season we'd add Gasol or Rondo or Love, and suddenly would be in contention. Now there are no top flight free agents. We have very few if any, keepers.

We'll hopefully add a top player via the draft, but they'll take a few seasons to develop. We can add a couple of pretty good FA's. The time frame is a few seasons longer now. Next season will be a struggle to make the playoffs. Maybe the year after that we'll be getting good. Does Melo honestly have the patience for that? The Knick/Melo partnership doesn't make sense anymore, so hopefully we can arrange a mutually beneficial parting of ways.

All seriousness we would save ourselves from major headaches in the future with Melo declining, constantly injured and eating up all the cap.

Do u guys understand the billion dollar business going on at MSG?
gunsnewing @ 12/20/2014 1:23 PM
What's better Hol? Getting boo'd at home only 20 games into the season or trading Melo. Lowering expectations with a positive and excited outlook about the future?
