Looking at the salary structure of other clubs--trading Melo is not easy.
First off Melo has to agree to go to the club--that eliminates almost any bad team with the exception of the Lakers and Charlotte imho. It might be hard for a really good club to take on a Melo because it could create chemistry issues as they have to give up to get.
So just sitting down to explore anything like this--you have to eliminate atleast 1/2 of the NBA if not more.
Melo to the lakers is the trade that I think makes the most sense. The Lakers can trade Nash, Lin and Randle straight up for Melo. Hopefully the Knicks get a pick or two in the process. The Kings are reportedly entertaining offering a really nice package for Deron Williams. I don't know if you trade Melo or if you trade Melo there but the Kings seem to be going off the rails a bit. They definitely seem like a team Phil should engage as a trade partner for someone currently on the roster.
I would love to get Randle from the Lakers. Still draft a top bigman and have Randle come off the bench. He is going to need to be brought along slowly after knee surgery anyway

I like Randall. I would hope the Knicks could at least get a 1st round pick as well, maybe the pick Houston sent with Lin. Hopefully a bit more than that.

I dont want Randle--undersized injured. I just read their draft pick in 2015 is gone unless its top 5. Im not trading Carmelo for Julius Randle and cap space. I would want 2 first round picks and 2 2nd. That is fair value since im getting zero back in players.

Id do their Houston 2015 an unrestricted 2016 pick and a 2015+2017 2nd rounder. 4 picks 2 first 2 seconds. Thats fair.

It seems reasonable. Nash is done. Lin isn't working out there and the Knicks would be taking on whatever is left of his 15 mil. If you take Randle out you need to make up close to 3 mil in salary to make the deal work. I think the Lakers would do this but I don't know if Dolan would take back Lin. Similar to Woodson having to fire the agent he shared with Larry Brown, Lin crossed Dolan. I am not sure Dolan moves on even if it is smart business (not sure that it is just the move that jumps out regarding Melo).

They can simply cut Lin.

They could but that would be like Jacksonville cutting Tebow if they had him. It might be the right move but the team/front office would get crushed.

if Lin doesn't perform new york fans will be the first to turn on him. Trust me in a new york minute
now if he is averaging 15 & 7 like he did here and abruptly is let go again than yes the Knicks will get crushed again

We would have no use for Lin--he can simply be cut--he would be a distraction--maybe a club going to the playoffs could pick him up
The only realistic possibility is Houston- I started a thread on it yesterday. Melo wouldn't agree to go to the Lakers if his reason for wanting out of NY is all the losing

Morey has the salaries to match and some picks to trade. We'd be looking at taking back Ariza, expiring a in Shved and Jet and that rookie we drafted and traded the rights to

I dont see it--I's rather keep Melo in this case. To me its pretty simple--Im not taking back ANYTHING that I dont want just to make a trade. If someone gives me clear cap room and picks--I can do that. If I have to take minimal cap with a young player and a couple of picks--I can do that. Im not getting stuck with Trevor Ariza for four years and bad draft picks.
Unless I go the package that was what I wanted or close to it--I'd much rather keep Melo. All of this stuff that melo scks is pure BS. IF melo was part of a TEAM--where we had a legit 4 a legit 2 a 1 that ws able to penetrate--a diversity of athletes and shooters off the bench--we can be much better.
Its very hard to trade melo right now where we get fair value back. I dont see it .
We did this SAME sht with Zach randolph. Remember Zach scks hes a cancer hes for himself--the guy goes to Memphis for NOTHING and gets back to being an all star. Have to stay PATIENT here unless a deal really makes sense.
If Melo wanted to be a Laker he would've signed with them in the off-season; he pretty clearly tried to use them as a bluff to try to get us to agree to a S&T with Chicago. No idea why Charlotte would be a possibility.
In my mind the only teams I think Melo agrees to a trade to are Chicago, Washington, LAC, GSW, Houston, maybe Cleveland to play with LeBron (doubt it), maybe Miami, and that's it. And I don't think GSW or LAC would be interested unless we were giving him away. Probably the same with Washington since I think they're hoping to get Durant in two years. And the other teams are hard to match up the money with.
In any melo trade i would want at least a 1st rounder along with a good young player. despite his flaws melo is still a top scorer and a perfect second guy on a playoff team
I love all the "I would need x" back.
We are not getting back picks unless we take back bad contracts.
Melo's contract will be extremely difficult to unload unless we get worse / take on sh1t.
Credible?
"I would bestow the desire for not one, but two first round picks!"
"These picks shalt not be protected as for I, lord of teh internet shall have it as I see it"
"but no, my thirst for value and redemptions shall require even more! Do a three way trade and bring me McDermott!!!"
"Conceptually, figurativly and literally I Would want back a mystical PG as well!!!"
"Melo, that bastard human cash flow sucubus shall be banashed from the Mecca!!"
"We need to shut him down so he heels! But, should a trade scenario by the grace of Merlin magically appear no other team shall know our secret and he is not damaged"!
"Tank! WE shall never tank! Call it the REPOSITIONING OF DRAFT STATUS"!
"Melo, he forced his way here!! Actually it was the sneaky trojan horse where appeared via a giant golden Mooby!!!!"

If thats the case--I have zero problem keeping him. Its either get what I want--or keep him.
