Knicks · Glen Grunwald was a genius (page 1)

With the Knicks now in the midst of a disastrous season that could turn out to be the worst in their history, Grunwald’s two years at the helm look more impressive by the day. With him as general manager, the Knicks went 90-58, including a division-winning 54-28 mark in 2012-13. It was the first time in 13 years that the Knicks had won as many as 50 games in a season.

Not only that, it was Grunwald who had the hunch to scoop up Jeremy Lin, an undrafted N.B.A. castoff, leading to New York’s brief, but beloved, era of Linsanity. And he had the sound judgment to acquire Tyson Chandler, who became a pillar, for the most part, in his three seasons with the Knicks.

The acquisition of J. R. Smith was also a coup for Grunwald and the Knicks — at least until last season. True, his 2013 trade for Toronto’s Andrea Bargnani was a dud from the start. Still, no general manager connects on every trade, and Grunwald, known for his expertise with the salary cap and an approach that was all facts and no flash, did well enough to look back with satisfaction. Nothing, it should be emphasized, has gotten better since he left. Only worse.

JR and Bargnani....that says it all.

We had one good regular season. Melo jr and tyson all had career years. Plus we had veterans like kidd thomas and sheed who kept the focus. However grunwald also resigned jr smith to a multi year deal and made one of the dumbest trade since eddy curry in bringing in bargnani

Anyone who traded a first rounder for Bargs, and not just any Bargs, but a Bargs who was about to be cut anyway, cannot be deemed a genius.

Plus he got so badly out played by Morey it was embarrassing- first Morey helped us sign Camby to a larger contract which would have made matching Lin's contract harder due to the luxury tax, AND at the same time got us to give up assets for the privilege of doing so!

I liked a lot of Grunnies moves- he was good at finding diamonds in the rough. He shouldn't of been fired, but he did make some big mistakes.

Grunwald wanted to pursue Lamarcus Aldridge. At this time Portland didn't make the playoffs I believe and he seemed to want out. Knicks could have offered a package of Tyson, Hardaway jr(or 2013 draft pick after select for Portland at the draft), 2016 draft pick or Shump who had value after the Indy series.

The Bargs trade was forced on him by Dolan due to the CAA connections. I don't know if he wanted to resign Jr or not. The only problem with the Jr Smith resigning was allowing him to eat into 2015 cap space. Same with Novak.

Amnesting Billups to sign Tyson rather then saving it for Amare was another huge blunder though.

Everybody's a genius. It's Christmas.

Getting Lin, Cope, and Prigs for nothing was pretty resourceful considering the team didn't have cap space or picks for his tenure.

Steve Mills = Genius

To hell with the rest

Acquiring Bargnani kinda snuffed out any other move he made. it like being married for 10 and then find out your spouse cheated 2 weeks ago. Dont act like thinking about the previous 10 years at that point.

I don't think a recipe for success in the NBA is doing these multi player pick deals--especially with no restriction. The workings of that deal--overpaying when no one else was bidding throwing in everything the other team mightve wanted and more is the sign that Dolan was part of the negotiations or that Dolan had no sense to say why at a minimum after all the disaster trades with no restriction in the past. The best success a GM can have is to build a suite of high quality young players to keep together for many years while doing smaller trades and or FA signings to enhance the team. Wild trades using your entire draft pick for years to come(which takes away roughly 50% of your teams ability to improve or to sustain) is a recipe for disaster. Just look at our last 15 years.
