Hey guys. I wanted to update what our cap situation is going to look like this Summer after the trade yesterday.
Guaranteed Salary:
Carmelo Anthony: $22.875M
Jose Calderon: $7.4M
Tim Hardaway Jr: $1.3M
Cleanthony Early: $845K
Pablo Prigioni: $290KTotal: $32.7M
Non-Guaranteed Salary:
Quincy Acy: $1.18M Team Option
Travis Wear: $1.04M Team Option
Pablo Prigioni: $1.44M Knicks have a $1.7M team option on Prigioni; $290K is guaranteedTotal: $3.67M
We also have our own 1st round pick this year as well as the worst record in the league. If we finish the season like this we're guaranteed to have a top 4 pick. Here are the salaries for the top 4 picks in the 2015 draft:
1st Overall: $4.753M
2nd Overall: $4.252M
3rd Overall: $3.818M
4th Overall: $3.443M
For our purposes I'll use the average which is $4.066M.
I think we'll waive Acy and Prigioni and we'll probably waive Wear, though we did trade 1.5 2nd round picks for him so maybe not. So, we'll probably go in to the offseason looking like this:
Carmelo Anthony: $22.875M
Jose Calderon: $7.4M
1st Round Pick: $4.066M
Tim Hardaway Jr: $1.3M
Cleanthony Early: $845K
Pablo Prigioni: $290KTotal: $36.766M
But, we also have cap holds of $525K for each open roster spot of which we have 6 in this scenario. That's another $3.15M:
Carmelo Anthony: $22.875M
Jose Calderon: $7.4M
1st Round Pick: $4.066M
Tim Hardaway Jr: $1.3M
Cleanthony Early: $845K
Pablo Prigioni: $290K
Cap Holds: $3.15MTotal: $39.916M
Let's assume that the cap will go up another $5M like it did this past Summer. That means we'll be dealing with a cap of $68M and cap space of $29M. The maximum salaries under this cap would be:
Years in NBA Starting Max Salary0-6 Years $16.012M
7-9 Years $19.214M
10+ Years $22.416M
good post VCoung
let me say it before anybody else does:
"stretch provision"
thanks
the problem with recalling D League prospects for this year is that they will have a cap hold of about 500k more for next season, multipled by the positions 2-3spots = 1m/1.5m
Versus just about 500k of the cap hold of the minimum salary
We will unlikely recall Thanasis because of his ceiling and we cannot offer him a contract beyeond 2 years without using cap space/exemption that we will not have until this summer
However, if we do not call up some of the players in the D League right now, we might just lose our chance....
With our roster, every contract and dollar is going to make a difference
A reason why we accepted the lowball in the trade for both Iman and JR Smith
On a side note,
Had we kept Tyson Chandler, I really don't know if we would have gotten more for him or less
Because of supply and demand versus trade value, with us losing being still expected on the roster
I think Phil Jackson is making sure we will get a TOP 3 pick, possibly even tanking for that 1st pick, and working on development and chemistry this year with some of our future role players/bench
Next is to convince CA to shut it down for the better of his future as well as our draft pick for this summer
OK4 will be our prize in a summer that will unlikely to lure any major FA's, especially ALL STAR talents
If we are unable to build a championship caliber team, we will likely come to a mutual decision to trade CA to a team like Houston....
If we miss our on OK4, I think we are better off trading down for more picks/young players, like 3-4 1st rounder (mid/late) and 3-4 2nd rounders (2 early/mid)
Getting back some younger players and some more draft picks this summer and in our near future as well
If all goes well, by 2017, we will have much cap space and a team to lure FA's with the development and change of culture of the team as we emphasize the development of
Fisher
The system
Our role players and players that currently play on the Weschester Knicks
OK4
(if we trade CA, all the pieces that will will get back)
I don't think we should stretch Calderon UNLESS, we have guarantee's that 2-3 major free agents will come to The Knicks
To just stretch Calderon and then hope that free agents will come will be too risky
Calderon is overpayed but he is suppose to be about the 7th best player on the roster, providing leadership/controlling tempo/ and providing solid 3pt shooting/FT shooting *especially in late game situations*
He isn't a solid penetrator or defender
However, in 20-28minutes per game, he could bring solid floor spacing and the 2nd ball handler/facilitator
Coug are your first yr max figures correct on a $68mil cap
0-6yrs = 25% = $17mil
7-9yrs = 30% = $20.4mil
10+yrs = 35% = $23.8mil
We won't have to worry about the 35% Max slot more than likely

Yeah, it's weird. The numbers used to figure out the salary cap and the numbers used to figure out the max salaries aren't the same. The salary cap is based off of 44% of income and max salaries are based off of 42% of income.
Depending on what Phil does we also have 2 Trade Exceptions from the trade last night. About $6 million for Smith and $2.5 million for Shumpert. Phil will have those in his pocket just in case. It's not sure to be used but it's not nothing either.

Trade exceptions won't help us cut salary/increase cap space if that's what you're talking about. If we were to use them they would only add salary.

Yep they are only going to help this yr if at all
To take on more salary this yr only[logically speaking] in efforts to pry picks from teams
Highly unlikely Phil pulls it off
Once the summer hits we'll have to renounce them to not count towards cap
Pablo should be traded next. I am sure they want to bring up Galloway before they lose him to another team. We may also look to steal someone from another team.
Can you trade trade exceptions? There are many who could use them, wonder if we could flip them for picks.

dont they last for a whole year? I would certainly think a $6mm exception could be very useful once we are capped out after signing guys etc

They don't when you fall below the cap
They only hold value when over

so lets see if he uses them to pick up a 2nd rounder etc from a team thats in the tax

Yes, that's actually the only thing you can do with trade exceptions. There's been a misconception that you can use them to sign free agents; you can't.

As I was trying to say, they are assets. It only remains to be seen how Phil actually manages to use all of his assets.
knicks will max out or near max out dragic + monroe. then hope to sign someone else for 2016/17.

MEH! It's possible but we really could see them go in a number of different directions. Maybe the max out Butler and go after Knight. There are so many scenarios.

We're not getting Jimmy Butler GOSH!

This about sums up just about the best case
Phil has positioned himself in

Unless Butler forgoes testing the Market the Knicks will get a chance to make an offer. You don't know what will happen after that. That's why you have to test it and see. I'm sure his agent will tell him to accept a big offer and test the Bulls resolve. An emerging star like Butler is worth spending on. I could see Phil going hard after him.
