Knicks · Greg Monroe Shows Out! (page 3)

1) he didnt opt out. He didnt accept any offer in his RFA last year, so Det brought him back at the QO. Its also why he cant be traded and is an UFA at the end of the year. He's in his 5th year of his rookie deal.2) For all the talks about his horrific defense and total inability to defend the rim the Pistons are better with him on BOTH ends of the floor, by alot. His defensive metrics are very good. So he may fail the eyeball test but reality is he's not that bad. Also look at this off/court on the court and notice he's split his time equally between 4/5. That may change with Josh gone. Coincidentally the Pistons are exactly the same on defense with Drummond off the floor or on it.
He's a nice player. Its highly probably whoever we sign via FA will be considered overpaid. Thats the FA lure. Money. Monroe is a nice player. His shortcomings are not the dealbreakers you would suggest. At least the stats say otherwise
His WS48 for his career is extremely underwhelming for a max type player and that does not really take his shoddy defense into account.
I'll post this again since some people are not very good at reading.
1. Greg Monroe is 60 out of 487 NBA players in Defensive Win Shares.
2. Greg Monroe has a Defensive Rating of 104 which is exactly the same as Taj Gibson, Nikola Vucevic, Al Jefferson, Cody Zeller and Brandon Wright, One point behind Tyson Chandler, Nerlens Noel and Javale McGee and one point better than Mozgov, Faried, Tyler Zeller and Miles Plumlee.
No one is saying he's a great defender, but he's not as bad of a defender as some are trying to make him out to be.

Where does he rank in overall WS48? 120th. So what does that say about his offense?
If you are quoting win shares then I would assume that you use the complete metric.

I will say that I am not as concerned about this. The dysfunction offensively due to the presence of Josh Smith could have affected him negatively. I don't know. but I do think he's a 24 yr old big who is skilled and can still get better. I'm more willing to take a chance on him with his talent and upside based on what I know of him. Unless you're talking about the elite in the league right now, you're always taking a risk in betting on a still developing player.
Once again I ask what Big man at his age are we going to get that has his upside? All of this really depends on who we get in the draft so this guy is simply an option. No one is saying that he's a lock to be signed or that there are no other options. We're just making the case that he should in fact be an option to be signed.

I agree that we may need to take some chances but I would take chances on guys who have always shown good metrics and perhaps did not get enough PT.

Jackson, instead, has chosen to strip down the roster and start over by building around star forward Carmelo Anthony.“The reality is this is probably the best way to go about the business,” Jackson said. “And to begin and to restart and to do it the right way and put it together in a way that really makes sense instead of bringing dominant people in to try and fit into this jigsaw puzzle makes it pretty difficult. We hope we’re on the right track, even though this isn’t the track we anticipated.”
Wonder what Phil means by this?

probably that he knows that he will strike out on the big fish due to the abysmal record and chaos.

I think that Wes Mathews hides behind bigger names and we should overpay for him.
Lowry never got the credit for a number of reasons and many on this board were saying that they would not pay him 10 mil and that he was a flash in the pan (possibly).
I think that Mathews is very underrated.
Brandon Wright is another that I would really like to have.
Milsap.
I would like to copy what Atlanta did. No big fish, its very good players in an excellent system.

I love Wes Mathews. Some balked when I suggested $12mm a year. Why should he take less than Iggy? Some here will say Iggy is overpayed and in his current role he is, but GS loves him and I think thats about the value. Dude like that could be very costly. Blazers have money

So he traded away for more cap space to overpay
For non metric stiffs?

Calderon to Minnesota for Thad Young
I doubt we can get Matthews Portland is winning and Paul Allen is wealthy
I guess it's worth a shot as it would be anyone else

I pay 12 for him. He is much better than Iggy but just like on this board, he gets undervalued because Aldridge is more sexy and Liliard is just a plain beast.

Wonder what Phil means by this?probably that he knows that he will strike out on the big fish due to the abysmal record and chaos.
So he traded away for more cap space to overpayFor non metric stiffs?
who said that he will be looking for non metric stiffs?

1) he didnt opt out. He didnt accept any offer in his RFA last year, so Det brought him back at the QO. Its also why he cant be traded and is an UFA at the end of the year. I would not say he is a stiff, he is just overrated.
And, who says that he is going to go after Monroe? Cause Nixluva says he will?
What does scare me is the Jason Smith signing. Smith maybe the worst player in the league.
Funny that he is #443 out of 444 in RPM.
Obviously players that both defend and score but also pass effectively are pretty much a given. They won't have to be stars. High effort guys are on the list too. So a Draymond Green type. The thing is that Phil can be very fiscally responsible in doing this as well. Younger players will be cheaper tho less experienced and still developing, so it's not a sure thing with those players. Not much different than drafting players. Basically the Atlanta Hawks and Spurs approach is a good example of what we can expect, I think.

WTF? I'm just like anyone else who is suggesting targets. Why is my mentioning Monroe somehow invalid. He's a freakin 24 yr old UFA!!! Why in the world wouldn't Phil talk to him? This is probably the most obvious Free Agent visit we can expect. Any UFA with his profile is going to get a call from the Knicks and they will most likely want to talk. There's nothing controversial at all in that. He'd be more affordable than Gasol, so where is the issue?

because I would be really sad if we gave him more than 8-10 million.
