Knicks · Is our situation better or worse than a blank slate/expansion team? (page 1)

Bonn1997 @ 1/10/2015 1:00 PM
I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other but I've been wondering about this.
holfresh @ 1/10/2015 1:00 PM
Reminds me of the Spurs before Tim Duncan...I fully expected this to be a down year..Just not this bad...We aren't in a bad situation..I'm more scared of the GM and Coach than anything...

Melo and the 2015 pick. I know it's popular to want a team with no salary and just draft picks, but it can be just as futile- look at the Twolves. Sometimes a mix between the two approaches is the best.

If we really were an expansion team in NYC, it would probably draw more FAs - You could be the first New York Knick HOFer.
I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I think I'd prefer our situation over a blank slate but it's close.

Honestly, I don't think players want the spotlight that is NY..You are a Yankee fan, you know only certain type of player does well here..I think you see it with coaches as well..I don't think its a draw that others think it is...

as has been asserted 100s of times now: melo is a third piece-- not even a second piece.

do you start with a second or third piece and "hope" a first and second is acquired? we have seen that it works only if you take the "big 3" can get away with collusion like miami did and boston did before miami... and expend much of your salary in so doing. or you can go way over the cap like i recall the mavs did.

but now it seems that jackson wants to take the "piecemeal" approach... sounds like he is opting for greater depth even if it means fewer "names."

a little late for that when you have one 30+ year-old player making 25 million per season who doesn't defend and does not make others around him better and has not shown he can perform in the triangle properly or even willingly.

but in a league that is characterized by too many teams and talent dilution/lack of skills i am a proponent of depth and defense.

i'd rather see cole, wear, early, thanasis, larkin, galloway work the triangle. that'd create a far more attractive destination for a top flight pro than the melo-centric garbage we had to endure.

You know I laugh when I see people still trying to blame Melo for this mess. And about him being a 3rd tier player I need not comment where that comes from. (Mr. no creditability when it comes to talking about Melo). The Knicks are getting thier ass kicked because this team have been mis-managed. Melo is a top tier player and if he wasn't how come so many teams wanted him and wanted him as their top player. The Knicks lack of defense hurt the team. Melo is an above scorer and for the position he plays he is a top re-bounder. All of the pounding and triple teaming the teams put against him makes wear and tear on the body. Why are teams triple teaming him if he is just an average Joe? I stopped posting so much because I get so sick and tired of the same old bull sh!t from some of you posters. This was a bad team and mismanaged also. Look what Jason Kid was able to do. We don't have the players for the triangle point blank. And when we do get the players for the triangle other teams will be prepared for it. No way should Phil have traded for Calderon. He should have brought a more experienced coach in to coach the team, If Steve Kerr came to coach this team his record would probably be the same as Fisher's. How could Phil underestimate this team so badly? Melo is the one bright spot on this team for now. Phil better wake up and do his home work. And some of you stop blaming Melo for every ass hole decision this team makes

With Melo here it's 10 times worse

Phil probably could have had Nurkic

If he would have entertained a S&T with the Bulls

There is no point in trying to engage them with Melo related discussion, it's futile.

I wish we were a new team we would be getting the # 1 pick automatically

Does an expansion team automatically get the first pick?

I think so Damon stoudamire then Bryant Reeves. Toronto and Vancouver

nixluva @ 1/10/2015 3:29 PM
Melo, the Draft Pick and Cap space is a pretty good deal IMO. It's basically up to Phil to put a good roster together with 2nd tier guys, which won't be expensive and we can still maintain cap space for the future. He can look to use his Trade Exceptions to perhaps land another pick. There are a lot of good options as long as you aren't only looking to land a fantasy team in Free Agency. IMO If you're looking at a very reasonable approach to rebuilding it's a good start.

Neither player was drafted no.1 overall. Any expansion team can't even get a first round pick their first year.

gunsnewing @ 1/10/2015 3:54 PM
My bad Bryant Reeves was pick 6
Stoudamire was pick 7

Of the 1995 draft.

It's been so long...How did they fill their rosters? Expansion draft?

Yeah, expansion draft and free agency. If I remember correctly, neither team was allowed a top 3 pick for their first several years in the league.

This

I hate coaches/organizations that play to a certain system and refuse to adjust to the personal.

Players will go where the money is at...and although I agree that it takes a special kind of person to make it in NYC (a lot of fickle fans and horrible sports writers) I think what will scare players more is the triangle offense.

We are going to have a draft pick and get a player with loads of "potential"...no worries there....free agency is where Phil needs to hit a home run....

You sure about that?

If F500 could let Phil use his "hot tub time machine", I bet we'd do real well!
