Knicks · Can Phil get us a pick in the 16-25 range? (page 2)

We pass on FAs because we add salary but we get picks in return. Its still a business the league is full of lopsided trades talent-wise because one team saved money.franco12 wrote:I'd almost say we should trade cap space (with Amar'e or Barg's ending deal) for picks.I think picks are needed more than any FA big name (who isn't going to sign here anyway!)
how is Amare's and Bargs' space worth anything? Its not.
the only way to dump salary is to take on someone elses unwanted crap.
I really hope that we stay away from that.
Thats why we would get a pick--this is a rebuild--if you have to take crp--you take it. Were not spending 34 mm on FA this year--just listen to what Phil said.
I think he's just looking at all options. I honestly think the last time we did this MSG really thought they had a good chance to land Lebron, where as this management would welcome that but arent kidding themselves.
No I don't. he has 5 years to put a team he wants together. hes not throwing it away in one year.
I agree and I'm hopeful we are finally going about things differently instead of the same starphuching that put us in this 15yr predictament. Although he almost damn near throw it away giving Melo that contract. Whether pressured by Dolan or not

yup!
No more declining thirty y/olds who are like expensive old broken down jaguars.
jags look great in your driveway but they are always in the shop.
check list
Fired woodson- hired fisher, this is looking like a disaster
resigned melo to a max deal, and all of a sudden he has Knee issues, which is never a good thing
Drafted Early..Jury's still out
Traded tyson and felton , for Caleron, Early, Daly, larkin, bad trade all the way around
Signed jason Smith, "Mr perfect fit for the triangle" I think not
hired a triangle bunch of coaches, who can't figure out to teach the new generation a old school system.
Thats 1 out 6, which is utter failure..we should have faith I guess.

exactly! He has tanked as a GM so far. And lets not mention the trades that he Nix(ed).
Jason Smith? Really? Really? This guy may be of the bottom 5 players in the league.
Lets see what he does next year.
Maybe he will actually have the guts to dump the triangle and bring in a coach who is a lot smarter than fisher (who I a have never cared for even as a player)

No, Briggs, you'd want the Knicks to pull off such a trade if it was a player YOU WOULD FEEL GOOD ABOUT. You don't give a flying fuck what the rest of us think about said player if you've already decided in your head the kid will be a future All Star.Players who slip out of the top 3 picks and end up being franchise cores typically still operate within the TOP TEN picks. Guys like Steph Curry, Andre Drummond, Paul George ( pre injury). They weren't top 3 picks, but if teams could do it over again, sure those guys would move much higher. But those guys moved in the top ten.
Sacrificing a 2018 first, when it could be the 6th player in that draft, for a guy right now in the 16-25 range would be madness. How many guys picked up in the 16-25 range end up as a core player on a contender? It happens sometimes, but against what odds?
The Knicks could very well miss out on the next Steph Curry in long shot pursuit of the next Rondo. Or Deng. Or Monta Ellis ( 2nd rounder I know)
The only way the Knicks are going to get said late first is to take on a bad contract and/or dump future assets. Likely both.
You want to do that for a long shot stab in the dark? Many players in the range you are talking about MISS. They don't WORK OUT. It's what you fail to accept Briggs, one of your many glitches is you assume because you like a guy, he will automatically pan out and work out in the NBA and on the Knicks. It doesn't even cross your mind that a player you like, even if the Knicks got him, might not work out.
Right!
And if you call him on something or ask him a questions, or argue with him, he simply does not respond. Like he is too saintly with his knowledge in engage with us peasants.
Also, he and Nix are just so sure about the future while the rest of us try to predict but have no clue how it will unfold.
Weird ...

Actually for the right player it makes all the sense in the world. All Im doing is moving my 2018 pick into 2015 to expedite rebuilding. With top 5 protection that keeps me out of the danger we have followed in the past. I'm not going to sit here and argue about it--Im sure the people runing the NY Knicks can seea potential gold mine of big men running through the first round. So many bigs--a HIGHLY unusual year. Lets say for example we get a Towns or Okafor--and behold players like a Portis an Upshaw maybe Myles Turner Christian Wood Frank Kamnisky Willie Stein Harrell--the fact is there are so many SOMEONE good is falling. Bobby Portis looks like a cross between Chris Bosh and Jermaine Oneal and is currently ranked around 22 according to mock drafts--that would be a s teal around pick 18 or 19. Why not be aggressive now and develop now so that when 2018 roles around that played is already on a winning core and we protect the pick top5 to hedge against catastrophic failure. Jees I hope that Phil can take on a nasty contract for pick--for the right players I might be willing to draft 3 times. There are going to be some good 2nd round guards possibly undrafted--if they want we can just purchase those--but for bigs--its going to cost is. This draft is unusual--we need to take advantage of it.

What if it dosen't work out and 2018 rolls around then what?
Ask yourself this question, if PJ said I want the pick from OKC, do the trade still go thru. Yes it does bc the Cavs was not taking a chance to get rid of Waiters and not get Shump.
My point is PJ does not care about picks and wont be surprise if he trades the #1 overall pick.

So you know Phil doesnt care about the draft because your 100% certain he could have gotten picks in a trade and didnt? Case closed detective!Ask yourself this question, if PJ said I want the pick from OKC, do the trade still go thru. I feel quite different this is a trade that's close to doable
But the protection probably needs to be Top 10
There have been countless number of players who don't pan out in the lottery too
Usually BRIGGS offers up scenarios where teams become a Special Victims Unit

If we got something like Towns/Okafor and Portis--we wouldnt even need a pick at 4 in 2018.
