Knicks · Spurs are not going to offer jamychal green a second 10 day making him a unrestricted free agent (page 1)

fitzfarm @ 1/27/2015 11:21 PM
Come on Phil open up a roster spot for this guy even if you just waive brags!
nixluva @ 1/28/2015 1:15 AM
It's up to Green and his agent. I'm pretty sure that Phil will make his offer as it's rumored. It's not like Phil is worried about having to clear a roster spot and won't make an offer 1st. Phil just needs to know he's got Green and then he'll do what he's gotta do.

That's cool so you just got off the phone with Phil? How do you know any of this
for sure? Is there any indication anywhere out there that the Knicks have done anything more than "express interest"?

Finestrg @ 1/28/2015 2:26 AM
Must be someone the Spurs like more out there. Only explanation...I mean why cut Austin Daye to only bring in Green for 10 days and then show no interest in renewing his contract? Strange -- dude really only got burn the 1 game against the Bulls and played well.

It's gotta boil down to playing time. Green obviously wants to play and show everyone what he can do. Kinda knew going in that he wasn't gonna get 30 mins a night on a championship team. The Spurs are a deep, well-oiled machine...2nd chance here for the Knicks. Looks like Phil inquired again (http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2015/01/teams...) -- I always say I just wanna hear the Knicks are at least in on a particular player. I just hope Phil's being aggressive enough on all fronts. There are 4 other teams in the hunt for this guy... Absolute no brainer to offer the kid what he wants, within reason of course: (1) a competitive contract (I'd forget the 10-day deal nonsense -- offer the same contract they just gave Galloway--the rest of the year + a partial guarantee for next season. Shit, I'd guarantee him next year if I needed to), (2) 30 mins/night and a starting role for the remainder of the season and (3) an assurance that we're interested in him for a rotation spot beyond this year, even with all the improvements we plan on making (provided he plays well the rest of this season). A willingness by Phil to sit down and meet with Green personally wouldn't be a bad idea too...We go at it like that, we'll have a shot. We go at this lukewarm as in "I can't guarantee anything," we're not getting him. Simple as that. Man, would I love to be a fly on the wall and listen to Phil's pitch/offer to this guy. There's a slew of guys we can waive to make room for Green too -- that's not even an issue.

And how do you doom merchants know that we haven't?

Honestly why would green go else where if we are truly interested? Out of all the teams mentioned we surly can offer him the most playing time...he'll get the most out of being a secess in nyc just like Lin ... No other team can offer what nyc can

This is true. It makes you wonder about these agents and what they do for their clients. Then again is not fair to bash the agent cuz I'm just speculating. Green could just say he doesn't want to be in ny.

You also goes wonder if the spurs found issue with him after they called him up. Alot of factors to think about with this guy.

I still want to keep Lou and Lance around for the season so someone else will have to bite the bullet.

Not a doom merchant at all. I was just wondering where Nix was getting this quite detailed information on how the Knicks were approaching the situation.

And for the record I fall into the "beaten dog" category of Knicks fan. You know the famous experiment of the beaten dog kept in a cage for months on end (or maybe it's in a cage and getting shocked, but I digress). Anyway after months of torture the scientists open the cage and the dog is free to leave its cage of torment and you know what?! It doesn't. It stays. Even though it's been tortured for ages. I approach Knick fandom at this point as an exercise in being abused and not knowing how or being able to walk away. And I guess that's how all fandom is in General when years of complacency and incompetence go by. As for Phil and Melo and the current regime all I can do is hope
That they'll step in ish and construct a team that will contend or at minimum be competent and fun to watch. What else can I do?

So yeah I hope we sign this Green kid and he blows up. Pulls a Whiteside. That would be great. I just have a hard time believing that there is an enormous amount of hidden d leaguers who are just waiting to be given a chance and then they'll explode into stars. I get there are rotation guys and such to be mined but rotation guys can always be picked up in the NBA for not much money, see exhibit A as in Admunson. I just can't get excited about d league guys it seems like a roulette spin. Exciting you might score a once in a lifetime hit but in the end you'll probably get something less momentous.

Does the kid fit the skill set at the position that Phil wants?
Has he proven himself to warrant a guaranteed deal for next year.
No he has not.
GWay got one for his play, not on his Dleague.

Im gonna guess the kid wants an opportunity and on a championship team thats hard to get.

Skill set and right winning attitude. Maybe the spurs see that he isn't on that level.

The Knicks have more to gain if the guy comes in and produces so well see what happens

This wasn't his first go with the Spurs. I believe he had played for them quite a bit. I really wonder if it was something else as they by all accounts new what they would be getting.

smackeddog @ 1/28/2015 11:39 AM
I'd like to see us try him out, but I do think this board has over hyped him ridiculously. Fans on the Spurs board weren't too impressed with him- they said he's too slow and athletic to be or defend a SF, but is to short defend PF. They said he puts up weak attempts around the basket in d league, that would just get swatted in the nba. They said his main saving grace is his mid range shot. He's likely a shorter, better rebounding Jason Smith at best.

I read they couldn't agree on a contract- likely because 4 or 5 teams were interested in him, his agent used this peak bargaining time (he isn't going to get more hype than he did following the d league show case) and insisted they sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal NOT another 10 day one. Spurs refused, so he left. Fair enough.

fishmike @ 1/28/2015 12:46 PM
For you guys saying go right to offering this guy a two year deal what does he offer that Early doesn't?
Nalod @ 1/28/2015 12:50 PM
Does he even want guarantee money for next year?

Maybe the call up for 10 days was to get him on a team to play in the NBA, but not Spurs who are contending.
Next year, he might have a promise from Spurs for next year and all thought he'd be better off not playing in the D league?

Nobody we bring on should be limited to just this year.

arkrud @ 1/28/2015 12:52 PM
Phil will not do more that 10 days first...
So if his agent wants more he can go kick rocks.
Nobody will give him more that 10 days, and no team will play him as much as NY can.

Hype

Early's a 3 in the NBA that needs to be developed as such (Early needs to be seeing more time each game imo). Green's a 4-man in the Taj Gibson mold body-wise. May have better offensive skills than Gibson and he rebounds the ball real well. Different players. Grab Green and develop both guys.

I'm also interested in Austin Daye who was recently released by SA. To me this guy could be Steve Novak + the ability to put it on the floor and block shots. I think he's worth a look too. Better option over Lance Thomas.

Nalod @ 1/28/2015 1:28 PM
Can the guy hit a 15 foot jumper???

All I know is that the Knicks have been trying to get the kid for a while. This isn't the 1st time they've tried. Green chose the Spurs instead and now he's free to explore other options. The logic suggests that the Knicks would still be interested in such a prospect. Dude does a little of everything so I can see why there would be interest. Who knows what is going on in SA. It could be that they weren't able to promise any more minutes and that's why they didn't come to an agreement. It doesn't have to be the Spurs rejecting Green for some negative reason as others have suggested. These are free agents and they have to think about what's in their best interests.

He's a great athlete and a long wingspan guy which we know Phil loves. Phil also loves cap space so the only way this guy is getting guarenteed $$ next year is if he comes in on a 10-day and really does well
