Shved's option is for just under 4 million. When the trade happened Shved was discussed as a contract that gave the Knicks another 300 grand in cap space. He has looked good so far. I don't think the Knicks plan on picking up his option. Can they resign him for less?

I'm pretty sure they can not pick up his option/renounce him, and then sign him to a cheaper deal (as long as they are under the cap). We only have $26mil spending money, so likely we will need that $4mil.

It's not an option, it's his qualifying offer. His cap hold is around $6.2m so like you said it is not likely they make an qualifying offer. They can renounce his rights though and sign him to what ever deal they like as long as it fits into the cap space.

I don't know why you would want him back unless you think his ability to get to the rim is real. He was getting to the line in Philly too so maybe it is but overall it's just too small of a sample size, imo.

It's interesting. If the guy can continue to prove he is for real then picking up his option is a steal. We have alot of games to figure this out

IMO Shved is a legit player. He's always had good passing and driving ability. You simply can't fake that. With those drives he's gonna get to the FT line. It's the one dimension that is missing from all of our guards. Shved is the best penetrator we have in terms of doing it with the size to also finish, pass or get fouled regularly. When he's playing under control he's pretty good. He's only 26 so $4 mil isn't a bad price to pay for a kid with his BB IQ and fit for our system.

If he can pick up his FG% and keep playing solid, improving slowly, 4 million for a good tall PG will be a bargain.
If he is so so, then we don't pick up his option and just offer him less.

Consider, in 3 games the guy is averaging 12.3pts 3ast 4rebs 1stl in 20mpg. 10-26 fg 3-8 3pt in limited minutes (taken from the other board.)

IMO this is the epitome of what Phil meant by changing the culture. You simply won't win a title with a bunch of guys with JR's mentality on your team. You need a bunch of hungry players who appreciate the privilege of playing in the NBA in NY. The thing you love about the guys we have now is that they may not have the most talent but they are giving it everything they have right now. If they can maintain that attitude the rest of the way then they will deserve to be brought back.

Another good thing about the new guys is that they didn't have the "Loser Mentality" the old guys had. Guys like Shved are coming in fresh and hungry and haven't been beaten down by losing so they play with a different mentality. Shved wasn't getting the PT and so now he's feeling good about more minutes to show what he can do. That's been the same for all of these guys we have right now.

Going to a team with the best player on the planet has a way of focusing one's attention. I don't see JR and Shump playing like they are now if they went to Philly.

Shumpert would be trying to assert himself as an alpha-dog PG, and JR would be the bad version of himself if they were playing in Philly.
