Knicks · Westbrook shooting 27% from 3 ball land (page 1)

Guess the Zen Master would pass.
Knixkik @ 3/5/2015 5:22 PM
No because he's an elite talent. But a guy who is a role player shooting 27% from 3 is a different story. We are talking about guys like Stuckey, not Westbrook.
nixluva @ 3/5/2015 6:20 PM
You talking about Russell Westbrook? Dude is killer from inside the 3pt line so why would Phil not like that? In an offense that maximizes 2pt looks why in the world would Phil be upset that a Guard is scoring at 46% from 2pt range and taking 9 FT's a game shooting 84% from the line? He'd pretty much fit right into what is going on in the Triangle. People forget that Phil STARTED Ron Harper who was not a 3pt shooter. There's a very real history there.

No Im talking in general. All teams should have 1-2 guys who can hit a nice % of 3 but you cant base the talent influx on that.

this is a weird thread. you seem to be implying that westbrook would win a title as the main guy in the triangle and is in the wrong situation in okc.

What? How did you get all of that form my post? I never said anything like that. Just noting that a guard doesn't have to be a great 3pt shooter to be effective in this system and Phil has had guards starting who weren't great shooters from 3pt range. Perhaps my use of Harper was not the best example to use. I was mainly trying to express that any guard who had similar talent to Westbrook could be successful in the triangle. It was more of a theoretical view.

Westbrook is actually more of a Kobe or MJ type guard in how he plays. He's a primary scorer and so he's not playing the same role as say a Fisher or Kerr did. Westbrook disrupts the defense and gets to the line a ton. He can be out of control but overall he's a very talented player. He's learning how to meld his aggressive approach with his team. I'm pretty sure that Fish and Phil could work with Westbrook and win with him as long as he could learn how to play within a structured offense and know when and where to attack.

But this thread seems to be based on the idea that not a lot of people like investing a starting spot to a player like stuckey in part because he is not a good 3pt shooter. So you are using the best scoring guard in the league who isn't a good 3pt shooter to counter that point. Is that not accurate? I am just saying when we talk about Westbrook it's a lot different than talking about stuckey.

his whole game comes across as improvisation. have you seen his usage? it's the highest i have seen in a while at 38.1%. that's up there with jordan, bryant, iverson. the problem with westbrook is that his game doesn't translate that well in the playoffs. he is less effective when he doesn't handle the ball as much so the numbers he is putting up without durant "getting in the way" are pretty much fool's gold. my problem with westbrook is that his skills don't mesh properly with durant's especially as well as others. i guess if you liked iverson and to a certain extent bryant then you will be enamored of westbrook. though i can see why certain fans are gaga over westbrook's game, i personally am not a believer.

Westbrook and Melo don't even fit together. It would be stupid to go after him unless you are trading Melo for him. Not worth talking about.
TPercy @ 3/5/2015 10:56 PM
Westbrook had a very good game up unitl the 4t quarter he was very good at distributing the ball and destorying the bulls defense. His decision making late in te 4th quarter was extremely poor. He starts doing pull up shots at the elbow, turnaround fadeway shots with 17 seconds left on the shot clock and the worst one was when Ibaka was SCREAMING for the ball and he was wide open as well, but what does he do? gets to the ft line and pulls up over 2 big men and airballs the joint. In crunch time, he is the last person you want on the floor in your team.

Yep even worse combo than Westbbrook and KD. Him plus Melo in the triangle would be an absolute recipe for disaster.

I think one way to balance that situation is to have a 2 PG arrangement and basically RW is playing as a SG in the offense. He can't be the person handling the ball the entire time. You need another guard and a forward that has PG skills and instincts. Westbrook isn't ideal but I think there's a way you could make it work. Not to mention that the offense he plays in doesn't really have a post up component. What Phil is trying to build here is to have real Post options. The ball is often fed into the post before the guards do anything else with the ball. That's how the Triangle works. There's less coming down and just immediately looking for your shot every single time. It's fine to look for early offense but you have to also have some patience when the D is back and look to run the offense.

Nah you would have to have to othe the biggest egos put their egos aside for it to work and then tackle the difference of their game and how it would impact the triangle.
