Knicks · Ot: Wes Matthews out the rest of the season with ruptured left Achilles (page 1)

fitzfarm @ 3/6/2015 1:38 AM
Wow can we get him on the cheap now this off season?
nixluva @ 3/6/2015 2:14 AM
Yeah it was a similar looking injury to when Kobe torn his. Making a drive and it just snapped. You could see his heel give way. He said in the locker room that he had some issues with the achilles but was getting treatment. Probably already had a small tear in his achilles already. Often players think it's just minor pain like tendonitis, but you can't mess around with anything like an achilles. It's sad thing to see such a good player go down with this kind of injury which could actually end a career. It's gonna be a tough road back.
callmened @ 3/6/2015 2:27 AM
thats exactly who we want. a shooting guard coming off an achilles tendon injury
smackeddog @ 3/6/2015 3:04 AM
Terrible timing for him- he was looking at a near max contract this offseason. He used to be my number 1 target, but as the season went on it became obvious he wasn't leaving Portland. These injuries have a very bad recovery rate.

Exactly.

I don't wanna say it but is this post of the knick curse? Or are the basketball gods trying to steer us in the right direction?

BRIGGS @ 3/6/2015 6:31 AM
I feel like I hexed the guy yesterday:(--boy hope he can recover within a reasonable timeframe. The Portland owner should take care of him--atleast for a year--give him a decent 1 year contract.
CrushAlot @ 3/6/2015 6:33 AM
Too bad. I think he probably was staying in Portland. It sounds like he is a great teammate. Close to all the guys and supportive. Hopefully he recovers.

It sucks as far as the pain and missing out on a big contract this off-season goes. He has already earned over 30 mil though!
Splat @ 3/6/2015 6:47 AM
That's a damn shame, such a bad injury. I figured he was probably the Knicks best hope for a really good free agency though he may have never left Portland.

In the future when robots play in the NBA injuries will be a thing of the past.

newyorker4ever @ 3/6/2015 9:42 AM
How's that A.Afflalo trade looking now?? I'm sure the Portland front office and coaches are glad they traded for him.
Knixkik @ 3/6/2015 10:19 AM
He may be had for cheaper now. He should be able to recover from this without any problems at his age.

He may be cheaper? Well I'd say so. I know we gave Amare 100mm with a knee that was 60% maybe well give 40mm to a man with a ruptured Achilles.

smackeddog @ 3/6/2015 11:19 AM
Let this be a cautionary tale for Calderon- Wes said he had been having some achilles issues in the run up to it. Madness to let Calderon play again this season.

Why is ever injury suddenly treated like its a career threatening and the player will never be the same? Injuries happen, its 2015, most players come back the same. Matthews one injury and the reoccuring knee injuries of Amare are very different. Just like your Westbrook/Stuckey conversations, you tend to use a poor or extreme example that really has nothing to do with the other.

Achilles tears are nasty injuries- usually the fixing process ends up shortening the tendon, which completely screws the whole range of motion, strength and manoeuvrability of it. Look at Elton Brands decline.

H1AND1 @ 3/6/2015 12:41 PM
This is terrible news. Im a big Matthews fan and was hoping the Knicks would target him. Would be so nice to finally have a defensively tough SG who can knock down 3's at a 40% clip.

Also feel for the guy: Undrafted, clawed his way to the NBA up from the depths to being a starter and was finally about to cash in with a nice contract and boom. He'll still get paid but likely Portland will retain him at a cheaper price than he would've gotten with multiple teams bidding on him coming off a healthy full season campaign.

blkexec @ 3/6/2015 12:48 PM
Achilles tears has nothing to do with a players decline. It's when old age and injuries happen at the same time is when decline begins. Usually after 30, you start the declining process already, injury or not. Mathews will come back just like he was before the injury. Next season, he will be rusty all year. If he's smart, he will take it easy for a year, even if he is cleared to play, then the following year, he will be back to full strength. For example, he can be a Steve Novak next season.....without the 1 on 1 dribble drive moves. But that's what you have to decide, when spending money on him. You will not get your moneys worth until the following year.

But with todays pressure on players to return quicker than normal, causes injured players to rupture something else on the good leg. That's when it becomes an issue.

I think this is the perfect time to try and get him on a cheap contract. The only problem is everybody will try the same thing, and if every offer is equal, he will most likely stay in Portland. Ruptured Achilles is one of the most painful injuries to recover from. It really test your work ethic, confidence and patience. I would offer him something below his highest offer, otherwise look else where. Which I think Phil will do anyway if he understands all the bad luck the knicks had with injured players. The pressure of playing in NY is also not a good match for Mathews, injured or not. And once fans, media, etc....see him draining 3's in practice, moving around like he's healthy, they will pressure him into playing significant minutes.

Coming from a person with two torn Achilles, he will look normal again after 3 months, but that's fools gold. It really takes a full year to be able to play 30 plus minutes every day at the NBA level. But he will be susceptible to other injuries due to him not playing during this recovery period, and he's pushing 30. So its a long, hard road to come back from. I know one thing will be better, and that's his set shot. Cause that's all you can do, while recovering. My shot was like water when I returned. My first step was shot, but all I needed was a pick and it was over.

Everybody tears their Achilles the same way....Mine happened that way too, on both sides. Overtime, when you do that move consistently (1st step was my go to move), it will cause minor tears and inflammation overtime.....which is why Calderon is in a boot. Then it feels better, so you go out and play at 100 mph.....Not realizing it's still torn.....until it ruptures completely, it will always be an issue. Mine was sore for 8 plus years before it completely torn. I came back both times in 3 months, and won a championship game after the 1st tear.....As a pivotal player on the team. It can happen, but it's harder when you play basketball to pay the bills....I didn't have that kind of pressure! Mine was just a local city league. The only pressure I had was pressure I put on myself.

Knicks1969 @ 3/7/2015 1:50 AM
I hope we can now get him for twice less the price he was previusly worth.
NYKBocker @ 3/7/2015 9:02 AM
Scratch him off our list. No damaged goods please
GustavBahler @ 3/7/2015 9:13 AM
Would rather focus on a big man with a torn ACL.
mreinman @ 3/8/2015 11:07 AM
Wes is now a perfect fit for Philly.
