Knicks · Ricky Ledo (page 8)

Once again we need to be more patient with some of these prospects. A kid like this has been pretty much ignored in terms of his proper development. This is the most he's been able to play on this level and it will take some time. Most of his development will come this summer when hopefully he can get with some high level trainers and get his conditioning up a few levels. I think we forget he didn't do college and has been kind of winging it IMO. Perhaps now he's getting some real instruction on team basketball and decision making in this system. People can hate on the "read and react" of the Triangle, but it helps make players smarter having to think the game. Ledo can score and pass and helping him to see the play before if happens will only make him better.

Im not saying he's a future star, but we never took the time in the past to take a long enough look to make good on some of these guys. The league is full of them and many play on good teams, but once they are "discovered" they are getting paid. Nice to see the Knicks trying to discover for once

Clearly a Posey type player. I can see him contributing to a good team.

Josh Howard brought you defense...Ledo is a scorer..But at 6'7" in the triangle and you an knock down the three, he can be useful..

He has stretched out to 3pt range and should only get better as he goes along. IN terms of bench players we have to be realistic about our limited Cap space. Having guys that are cheap but productive is important. I think Acy could develop into a decent role player. He's at least shown the ability to add to his game, which shouldn't be underestimated. He's still limited but that's understandable at this point in his development.
The problem is that you don't win with young guys... A roster of young guys means lots of losses...I want to see if Acy can shoot like that tonight...Hope the coach plays him..

Ah! Thanks, been waiting for Knicks channel to release this vid.

He's got plenty of handles for a guy that size. He has to adjust to the level of defense in the NBA. He doesn't protect the ball enough as he dribbles. Guys won't just let you do whatever you want like it's an exhibition. He'll adjust to that and be fine IMO. He does just need more PT. It takes a bit of time to make the full adjustment but once he does he should be pretty good. He's already starting at a pretty good talent level. I think he really needs a trainer who can help him with his explosion. He needs more of a burst to get by his man a bit better. When he drives he's too upright and not leaning forward enough. He doesn't get good push and extension with his legs but takes really short choppy steps. He needs to work with a track coach to learn how to explode and develop more leg strength.

Obviously the vets will come in FA this year. The young guys will be brought along in time but the vets will lead the way. This was a good development experience tho.

Your first sentence is that he has plenty of handle for a guy his size and third sentence says he doesn't protect the ball when he dribbles..Which is it?

Yea.. scoring is important. For all the fancy stats in the world the team with the most points still wins the game

Being careless with the ball is not the same as not being able to dribble the ball at a high level. Dude can get where he needs to with the ball, thus that's what handles actually is. BUT he can be careless and not respect the defenders by dribbling too high and with the ball out where a defender can reach in and steal it. It's really just a small matter of him being more aware of this and not being so careless. He keeps his head up and is scanning the court for his teammates and sometimes forgets his defender and his dribble is left exposed.
"Ledo looked to be more relaxed in the first half against the Nets, notching 11 points, four nifty assists, getting to the basket and hitting 3-pointers. He quieted in the second half, scoring just two points and finished with three turnovers, including a costly one with 3:40 left when he overdribbled and lost the ball to Markel Brown.
“Same thing as the first half,’’ Ledo said. “I just didn’t get the bounce.’’
Fisher said the 6-foot-7 shooting guard is in a tough spot learning a new offense and new teammates.
“It is hard to drop into a basketball team and play the best you’re capable of playing,’’ Fisher said. ‘There is no frustration really with Ricky.’’
Often, it looks Ledo is out of place in the triangle. But he’s got a lot of talent, enough to create his own shot outside the triangle .
“It’s coming easier,’’ said Ledo, who has already played nearly three times as many minutes with the Knicks as he did in two seasons with Dallas. “It’s becoming second nature.’’
Ledo, who never played a game in college after being ruled academically ineligible at Providence as a freshman, would hope to get a training-camp invite but first he’d have to prove himself at Las Vegas summer league in July.
“I’m running the system being aggressive,’’ Ledo said. “I’m definitely blessed they showed interest in me and continue to work hard.’’

If he keeps improving, and gets into a training program that puts his nose to the grindstone, I think by the end of Summer League, we'll be looking at a guy who will make our roster next year. We're basically taking a rookie and throwing him into the fire. Especially in the first half of the Nets game, I saw the Ledo that scouts have always said can make it at this level. I feel the same way now that I did when we 1st got him. The Kid just needs to be developed and this is a great situation for him right now. He's being taught how to think the game and use his talent within a team concept. This will only make him a better player. I see enough out of him to consider him a keeper. His overall skills fit what we do.

Ledo has more skills than half the D leaguers on the team. He's just out of shape and sloppy. But he's worth an end of the bench spot. Once he gets in shape and learns how to play under control, instead of trying too hard to cross somebody up, he will be fine.
mreinman wrote:can't see how anyone can believe that this guy has "earned" a bench spot.
It's not about "earning" a bench spot. He's a prospect and you want to see signs of development. He's actually starting to adjust and get better. We also don't see him in practice so it's possible that the Knicks see growth already and that makes it worth taking a further look. He's a low cost high reward prospect. He's only 22 and he does have talent. Given our need to find talent wherever we can it's a good thing to have him on the team and take a look to see if he's worth investing in further.

no idea what they are seeing and what they are thinking ... just saying that there is no way for us to believe at this point that this guy belongs
If I were a betting man :-) ... I would say that this guy has a 5-10% chance at best at making this team.
