Free agency is going to be brutally tough.

earthmansurfer @ 4/9/2015 1:16 PM
I get the feeling we are going to build a proper team that plays defense and not necessarily go for the big names. If we play better that way, then I am all for it.
I want team ball.

And, isn't this year have a crapload of free agents?

crzymdups @ 4/9/2015 1:33 PM
A lot of those teams are going to use their cap space to re-sign their own guys though.

San Antonio has Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan (if he doesn't retire) and Manu (if he doesn't retire) and Danny Green and Bellinelli

Memphis has Gasol

Portland has LMA and Wesley Matthews and Aaron Afflalo and Robin Lopez (they may lose one of those guys)

Dallas has Rondo and Ellis and Tyson

Phoenix has Brandon Knight and Brandon Wright

Detroit has Reggie Jackson and Greg Monroe

Atlanta has Milsap and Carroll

I think there will be some movement, but FA really undermines players ability to move unless they want to sacrifice dollars and guaranteed years.

I believe that Phil will go for at least one. This squad needs more than one difference maker or it will be more of the same. I dont believe Phil wants to miss the playoffs again.

melo is not the foundation for such a team. I do agree that this would be nice.

At this point I would settle for Melo's weak defense if he play any semblance of team ball.

nixluva @ 4/9/2015 1:41 PM
Not all teams will be buyers. Some teams will be using much of their space to retain top players.

I've tried to form a rough list of cap space teams will have but it's not 100% accurate due to cap holds which can change.

When I watch the Spurs--every single player on their team can put the ball in the basket. I am all for defense in a team concept but I dont want a team that plays 4-5 or 3 on 5 on offense. That leads to a lot of isolation basketball and lack of ball movement

But then you mentioned a lot of the premium free agents.

Mills said they have already spoken to agents of what we presume to be their top free agent choices. I'm sure they essentially already know the guys they are likely to get.

Phil is most definitely not trying to build that kind of team. He believes in free flowing offense with lots of guys with all around skills. He's going to want a lot of 2 way players. It just makes a team more potent when you have more 2 way guys. Of course it's not easy to build a team full of guys that are really 2 way players, but the more players like that you have the better and I believe Phil is determined to go in that direction.

It looks like you have both cap holds and 1st year contracts included in the total cap numbers. Is that correct? Did you use $4.7MM for the Knicks assuming #1 overall? Or #4 overall assuming that is the minimum contract we will have from our draft pick? Then 4 cap holds?

Roster spots look like they will be an issue for Philly.

That takes quite a few teams off the list. Also, Hinkie has chosen cap space flexibility over free agent signings so I don't think Philly will be in the market for a player. They have so many picks, a guy coming over from Europe and current players that it will be interesting to see what their roster looks like next fall.

cap holds are not included or else Portland would have zero space. by not including cap holds it creates an artificial kind of.

The biggest question mark in FA is what Portland does with Wesley Matthews. I asssssuuuuuume they'll offer him a deal... but who the heck knows. That's a major injury.

I want to know how much they are willing to pay Ro.Lo

I feel like Ro.Lo will never leave Portland. The guy seems like the most natural fit in Portland ever. Heir to Bill Walton's tie dye shirt collection at some point. Portland seems like the kind of team where guys take slightly less to stay, because the fans like them and it's a quality organization and all that. I believe they paid Brandon Roy a lot of money even when it was clear he would never be the same. Who knows, I guess - maybe Robin wants to go comics shopping with Brook in Brooklyn.

My rule for FA is pay attention to who Melo likes - supposedly Tobias Harris and most definitely Rondo. For my money, when the chips are down, Melo is still the loudest voice in the room about FA.

misterearl @ 4/9/2015 6:41 PM
A college sophomore and anything less than an elite (double double machine) free agent are not elevating the Knicks into playoff status.

We have a long uphill climb from the cellar.

didn't Roy get hurt after his big contract and the team and roy fought over declaring him injured.

IDK, about players taking less especially before the cap boom.

Anyway, I think the real advantage the Knicks have over some teams is the ability to go after FAs from other teams because they will renounce most of their cap holds. The best move for them is to play the RFA game early to make teams lock in their cap space. That will assist in preventing teams trying to get FAs before they go over the cap to resign RFAs using bird rights
