#1 We need a post player who can consistently give us 20 points and 10 rebounds and do it in and out.
#2 We need two additional post players one of which is a rim protector
#3 We need to add to our guard corp of Galloway Hardaway Schveyd--we need 2-3 more guards who can shoot it drive it and play D--one from the PG.

If we address these three things and get Carmelo back--we will be on the serious mend. One thing I see from the ECF--the quickest way to be good to counter a team like Cleveland is to have guys who can dominate the pivot. We will not have guys who can counter Kyrie Irving or Lebron James in the near future--no one on earth can do that. But they are vulnerable inside and when you can exploit teams inside--you can open up the attack from the perimeter. I really belive you need to have a guy you can throw the ball into the paint and score at 50% but can also step out and pull the D out with him. Thats why I see so much value in Kanter--Kanter is made to dominate the ECF--there are no counter player for him in this conference from the 4.

Look at this guys skills level. Multiple mid range shots forceful aggressive post play great hands footwork in the post. He s 22 years old!!! We can find guys like Christian Wood Robert Upshaw Dakari Johnson well into the draft if we dont get Towns---we already have Cole A add another young athletic big who can block shots off the bench--get aggressive into the draft and we can be good right away--I believe that. If Kanter was already a dominant defensive player--there simply wouldnt be discussion of his availability BUT defense is something that can EASILY be worked on. WHo cant get better on D think about basketball history--all players who give effort get better on D. Kanter is younger than several draft picks this year and can score 25 points in the post almost at will. This is a no brainer even if its a 70-75% chance that OKC will match---I would put their pocket book to the task.

Briggs- I think our #1 need is an offensive guard who can attack off the dribble, set up team mates and hit an outside shot.

Then, front court help, and in a myriad of ways.

We need to add at least 3 impact players this summer. Not necessarily all stars, but players that can make a positive contribution on either end of the court.

I hope they keep Shved and I wouldn't mind if they traded Hardaway. Shved is a tough call. It would have been nice to see him play with Melo. I thought he looked really good for the Knicks but I don't know if they will pay him.

I think Melo is best served playing a hybrid role up and down from 4 even down to 2 at times aka 3-4-2. Hes got such a good jumpshot that he can take 6-8 minutes at the two in a big line up--majority at three and even play minutes at 4. I dont think it would be great for Melo to be backed down into the post by 245-275 pounders for 35 minutes game in and out any more. He needs to take breaks where he guards the other teams spot up shooters. Reggie Miller played a 2-3 at 6-8--I think Melo can become more accurate from 3 and mix it in and out. Thats why I like Kanter with melo as they can mix in and out. Monroe only goes to 10 feet--so he clogs the lane--thats why they could not win in Detroit with 2 7 footers clogging their own lanes.

BRIGGS - Melo is 30 years old and on fragile knees. We would be fortunate to have him at 90 per cent by training camp.

I agree; specifically, given there are so many FAs bigs on the market. We should aim to draft Towns; if he is not on the board, pick Russell. The addition of Russell, Monroe, and a couple of three point specialists would set us up for many years to come. We will definitely be a better team minus: JR, Amare, Shump, Bargnani, and Calderon

Let's not forget that Phil hand picked Schved. IMO they have plans for Schved in the future rotation. He showed how a guard is supposed to operate in the Triangle. He scored inside and out, got to the line, rebounded, set up his teammates... Really no way I can see them not looking to bring him back. Not when they know for sure that he has the game for this system. He's a natural fit.

Of course everything will be impacted by the draft. once we know where we'll be drafting that will set up everything else in terms of Free Agency. We do need bigs and guards. I would say we have the SF covered, but PF, C and guard is where the big needs are. Phil's goals become much clearer once we draft.

Thats what I am saying--I dont think he can play 4 full time in anyway. He cant start 4 against dudes who are 250+

Let's not overstate the issue. The key is rebuilding the top 6 rotation. We have some capable role players for the back of the rotation. What we're looking to do is upgrade the top of the rotation. Melo, Schved, Galloway are rotation players IMO. So we're talking about adding another 3-4 quality players to round out the top of the rotation. People keep exaggerating the situation. Yes we stunk this year, but in the NBA it is possible to upgrade a team significantly in one off season. They may not be title contenders but it is possible to improve this roster a great deal.

nixluva - your optimism knows no bounds and that is just the byproduct of looking at things in a vacuuum. We may upgrade the team, but that is what EVERY franchise seeks to do. Upgrade. From championship team on down, every franchise uses the Summer to get better.

If we were in a situation where the Knicks got the "upgrade" and everyone else stood pat, it would be lovely. Sadly, that is not the case. Upgrading does not make you better, it only means you are not falling further behind. There is not a single player on our roster that is coveted by another team. That should be all you need to remember.

Yes, Uncle Phil will improve the roster. He better. Winning fewer games would not be a good look.

Please allow me to retort.

It is true that all teams look to try and improve every off season. Not every team will be successful in improving this summer. That's not how it works. Some teams are capped out. Some are too young and only looking to build thru the draft. Some teams have bad management and no direction. I think this team is actually in a very good position. I think that there are enough quality FA's this summer that this team should be able to revamp the roster to a nice degree.

The Knicks are in a sweet spot of having a top 5 pick and cap space while at the same time still retaining their All Star player. It's not the case that the Knicks are starting completely from scratch. It's entirely possible that this team will be significantly better next season with the right additions. But it's only the beginning of the process. It's not all on next year as if we have to win a title next season. We could however see a very good improvement in this roster this summer. There are no guarantees, but let's not assume that this team will be languishing in the basement of the NBA just based off of this season.

You keep saying this but that doesn't make it true!

Your premise about the Knicks starting from the back of the bus is flawed. It would really only make sense if we were doing a traditional rebuild were we drafted in successive years and waited for those players to develop. That is NOT what we're doing. We're not Minnesota or even Philly. The Knicks are going to be buyers in the FA market and that is how they intend to build. There are a good number of above average Free Agents that will be available. This is why I created the Win Share 48 thread, so that everyone could clearly see how many quality players there actually will be available this summer.

Outside of the draft we'll be looking to add starting quality players. We already have some good role players who will be able to slide back into their proper roles and minutes. We don't have to add 10 new players in order to make significant improvement.

I have no idea what you're talking about. This season was about the lowest we'll ever see this team get. From here on the team is going to be on the way up. We know the team is going to have a top 5 pick and we know that the'll have cap space to get some starting talent. Can we at least understand that we're going to have a chance to get talent that is better than the players we had before. We're not looking to add similar players, but BETTER players.

The Knicks need everything.

The whole gig about the EC is that it is POSSIBLE to go from our shtty record to +50 wins and a competitive NBA playoff team right away.

We have massive cap space and a high draft pick. I'm ALL for rebuilding but at the same time I want to win. I dont care if we draft someone and they are part of the 2nd unit to start--thats no big deal. I dont care if we add developmental guys from the draft--all for it. But there is OPPORTUNITY now and I dont want to lose sight of it. What team really is that great in the EC? Why cant a team change dramatically--in on year? Why did we pay Carmelo if we dont want to win now? No one gives a sht about coming to see Carmelo--they want to see the KNicks win. I DO NOT agree that this has to be a 5 year process.
