If we could pay him couple mills per year less than Monroe I think he is a better solution.

Depends on two things - price and who will be the next starting 4 or 5 playing with them. If we draft KAT or sign a defensive minded 5 I would be more than ok with Monroe yet with Ok4 he would be a bust. Melo-Monroe-Ok4 = no D. Monroe would be goooood with Ibaka but I find it hard to pay that much to a big guy who can not protect the rim even a little bit. So if Thompson will take less money I think he may be a better player for us. So yeah I would rather have Thompson.

I like what I've seen from Thompson but I would take Monroe.
I think Monroe fits pretty damn well in our system and with Melo plus he's just more offensive minded which we need to take some scoring pressure off Melo.

Would rather have Monroe. He's the better player. Thompson doesn't provide enough back line defense to close the gap.
I'd be cautious about players who look good playing next to Lebron. Lebron took a bunch of bums to the NBA Finals in his 1st stint in Cleveland. All of a sudden many players who didn't get it done are looking good with Lebron.
In New York we're going to be targeting a certain type of player who as Phil says have "multiple skills". We'll also have limited guys but mostly the remake of the roster should pull in more well rounded players. We won't have the luxury of a Lebron so you have to improve the overall skill level of each and every player to make up for the greatness of one individual like Lebron. The more high quality players we can bring in the better.
Well we don't have 50 mill in cap space and if we don't trade Calderon for a smaller contract we will have less than 30 mill. Giving more than a half of it to a guy (Monroe) that has seroius flaws and with better talent around him for two years did not make it into the playoffs looks stupid. This guy is not worth 15 mill so I would rather go with 11 per year for Thompson and use that 4 mill to add more quality players.
He's a good player just not a game changer.
I would rather overpay Draymond Green and grab guy like Brandon Bass and Caroll, we need a bunch of glue guys. Tristan fits that mold, but when someone like Lebron is out there it opens things up for guys.

That's if Thompson settles for $11M. He's already turned that down. Thompson also has serious flaws, so you mind as well go with the better player. $4M won't be as big of a deal when the cap goes up. This is all contingent on who we draft of course.

I wouldn't say Monroe is Better. Just different. Tristan won't be able to anchor your post position in your offense as Monroe can do. That's a huge deal if you run an offense like the Triangle. Tristan's game has more value on the Cavs where he has other players filling certain roles and he can be the "garage man". Guys like Monroe or Cousins have a similar role on their teams.

Monroe is a slightly better rebounder. Yeah, Thompson is a better defender at the power forward slot, but that'd nullified by the fact that he's so weak offensively. You can trust that Phil is looking for starting caliber players cuz we already had a team full of reserves. You gotta start with your top 6-7 rotation players. We basically don't even have a starting 5 right now so that has to be the priority. You have to target starters who are actually impact players first. That's the real difference between Monroe an Thompson. Monroe can anchor your post offense and rebounding and Thompson can't do both.
Yeah you are probably making a good point that Monroe can be so much better. Well I know that Thompson didn't sign a contract worth that much but at this point he is not worth more than 10 mill per year and nobody will give him that. I also agree that we don't have starters. At this point we have 2 out of 5 in a best case scenario. We will have 26 mill and we will give 15.5 to Monroe and we will have around 10 mill. It will be hard to get another quality starter.
