Plus he's the only FA who seemed to genuinely like the idea of becoming a Knick when asked about it at allstar weekend

Carroll and Monroe would be a very solid FA haul.

Who protects the rim? It will be a layup line

29 is old?

yes.. when you are a role player who just started to play well in the last couple of years... that is pretty old...

and he'll be 33 whenever his next contract ends...

Hahahaha that's ridiculous. He'll be just as good a player at 29 as he will at 33 or 34. This dude is a willing defender which is what we need.

Gasol is the dream (and it would also justify Phil getting Calderon, which would amuse me after all the heat taken for the Tyson trade)- the most impactful max contract player out there for us (not including the restricted FAs). He'll still start to plumpen though once he's inked his max

If he is 33 when his contract ends, then we will have gotten all of his prime years out of him.

For some reason, once Melo turned 30, this board started acting like it was 40- now they have to continue this fallacy by applying it to other players to save face.

Yeah that's what it seems.

Agreed, plus a couple of minimum guys. These are 2 of the most (if not the most) realistic major free agents we can grab.

Monroe, Carroll, Mudiay or Russell, Lavoy Allen or Kyle O'Quinn.

Yes it would and one of K.Porzingis or WCS would look good playing next to Monroe as well. I know most everyone wants Mudiay and I wouldn't be mad with him as the pick but if we sign Monroe to play center then I would like some size playing at the 4 spot next to him. There will be plenty of options though but Monroe/Carrol would be a nice start.

Lets take out traditoinal stereotypes of knicks that we max everyone.
Lets assume the cultural revolution has some merit and phil can create destination not based on being highest payer.

No doubt its smart business to create a market for yourself and make mention of Knicks, or anyone else. ATL if they want to keep him has to respond with Money.
Fans might call for ATL to resign him. Thats your customer base calling.
More bidders, higher money. Smart.

Is he "Using us to get more money" oh woes is me wounded knick fan? Perhaps. So what.

Yes we have a SF. In Phil's world there are not position players but players. Can he defend two positions? There is barely any "Power" in power forward these days let alone center so can he defend the 2? The 3? go small and defend the 4?

Can we sign both him and Monroe, both with opt outs for bigger money when the cap goes up?
Does Demarre ok to take less money but have security in a city, for a coach and in a system that he wants?
Will he chage that hair?

Carroll is a great defender and I want to draft WCS.

Who will have the better career, Winslow or Carroll? I like both of them.

Still, the best FA for us would be Gasol, because he allows for the greatest number of options for building a team- he complements nearly every other move we could make, and is compatible with basically every other free agent and possible draft pick.

However I have long since given up on landing him, so Carroll would be my number 2 high priced target. Even if we drafted Winslow, I would move Melo to PF, and either Carroll or Wilmslow to SG.

A) He's 29... when i say he's old... i mean there's really no upside left.. esp being a role player...
B) He plays in a vastly different system than ours with vastly different personnel... role players who are good in a specific way is hard to replicate unless you put them in the same kind of positions as he was on the team that made him successful... we don't have Al Horford, Teague or Korver...
C) He's a late bloomer... normally not a good sign... all you have to do is remember the chris child's signing...

he fits the profile of the kind of role player you do not target to a T... he's a dangerous signing for anyone that's not the hawks...

But that would mean no Russell, Mudiay or Winslow which would leave an even bigger hole in the roster talent wise. If the Knicks take aaa as at 4 then they really outdid their own stupidity

So we don't target anyone over the age of 28, we don't target anyone on a winning team with a good system, and we also don't target anyone from losing team. Who exactly do we target?

The not signing anyone over the age of 28 is unrealistic- players usually stay with their teams for their first two contracts, they really only become available when they are coming up for 30.

Well....you have to pick your poison. We can not fill every weakness in one year. We will have a weakness somewhere. And look to fill it the following season.

We do not have the cap space to sign Monroe, Gasol AND Carroll. Not even close.

Monroe and WCS would make for a nice 1-2 punch down low. What about if it's Milsap that we sign along with Carrol? Milsap and WCS would be nice to and better defensively.

There is absolutely no reason to not sign someone who will be 32 when their next contract ends. No reason to think a player will decline over the course of that contract.

I know defensive two way bigs don't grow on trees...assuming WCS learns how to contribute on both ends. Regardless who we draft, nobody is a finished product. Towns has weaknesses just like WCS or Kaminsky. We can only hope these guys improve....same with FAs like Monroe. Seems like everybody thinks players never improve. A change of scenery is all that's needed sometimes.
