Knicks · Okay Briggs, here's a trade I would think about (page 1)

crzymdups @ 5/31/2015 10:49 AM
Pick 4
Jose Calderon

For

Pick 9
Pick 39
Lance Stephenson

We can take Kaminsky (or Stein) at nine. Stephenson adds size and perimeter D. Pick 39 you try to get that Brazilian PG or another Prospect.

Why does Charlotte do it? Stephenson has clashed with their culture, they can draft Mudiay at 4 and play him next to Kemba Walker. Jose Calderon gives them a decent backup and some shooting and leadership.

I'd prefer to just draft Winslow or Mudiay or Stein at 4, but this move gets us that perimeter defender we so sorely need at basically a cap neutral cost - Stephenson only makes $1.5M more than Calderon and the 9 pick makes less than the 4 pick.

So you have Kaminsky, Stephenson, pick 39 and ~$26M in cap room.

Holy fucking shit no. That's a terrible trade. If Charlotte wants to trade Stephenson to us it should Calderon for Stephenson and pick 9. There's 0 reason to be giving up our 1st in a trade like this.

Crz no way man. The whole thing I want out of 4 is absolute maximum value. I'm talking 2# 1 even if we move back 3 slots at a min. Calderon we can waive. I'll even take wcs on a trade back if they get 2 add #1s. I still believe for this team with our lack of draft assets that potentially this might be the smartest route. I can live with stein although I fail to see him as a triangle system player who gets pushed around and loses focus.😁

crzymdups @ 5/31/2015 11:30 AM
Haha. Okay. I just thought it was a more realistic trade than some I've seen.

As I said, I'd prefer to just take BPA at 4: Winslow, Stein or Mudiay.

I do think Stephenson would be a fit here. He's an all-star two-way talent in the right situation.

Is he making too much to use our trade exceptions? Forgot if they can be combined.

Lance makes $9M next year, and there is a TEAM option for 2016-7, so essentially, he has one year left in his current contract.

No way I give up the #4 for #9.

Not sure we could get the #9 with him given the depth of this draft, but it would be worth a try, of course.

Would he be worth #39 and future picks if we are only giving up a trace exception?

Don't think they would take Calderon.

The reason they'd take Calderon would be to get pick 4 from pick 9. I think it's pretty fair in both directions.

As you said, Stephenson has a team option for 2016-7. If he doesn't work out after one season, we dump him and have $9M more in cap room next summer. Calderon's contract runs two more seasons guaranteed.

I think its the right thought - but I would like to see if we could get GS to give us their pick & David Lee.

Maybe monroe is a done deal - but I think we'd be better off using our cap to offer relief & be compensated with draft picks.

I think you could still do the deal with the warriors if they are moving Lee and their pick because Lance/Jose would pretty much cancel out each other cap wise I believe Lance makes 2 mil more but for a year less. If the Knicks came away with Lance, Lee, the 9th and 30th pick in the first round and the 39th pick in the second round that would be quite an overhaul. They still would have around 12 mil in cap space and would have 24 mil coming off the books in 2016.

I'd look into the Lee thing.

It's going to sad and sort of hilarious if Monroe just re-signs in Detroit.

I don't think he will. He took his qualifying offer and turned down a lot of money so that he could be unrestricted. Also, Falk is his agent so I think he gets his money and plays where he wants to.
