Knicks · How do you guys feel about Calderon? (page 1)
StarksEwing1@ 6/28/2015 12:37 AM
Still hate it. Hoping phil can somehow get someone to take the contract but doubtful
FistOfOakley@ 6/28/2015 12:39 AM
his shooting alone makes it worth trying to keep him but it obv depends on who we are targetting and his health...
WaltLongmire@ 6/28/2015 12:42 AM
Would feel a lot better about him if he came to camp looking like he had worked out, a bit.
Athletes need to make adjustments as they age.
He is not a terrible player by any means, but lets see some pride and a new approach toward staying in shape.

That's an interesting take I hadn't thought of. Is he doing everything to keep himself in optimum shape, to be as quick as he can be, etc.? He may not be.. Pablo, by comparison, looked to always be in tip top shape.
My take on Jose is this -- he's OK by me as 3rd string PG as long as that contract of his doesn't get in the way of us doing something to improve the team...Don't want him in a starting role, not even as the primary back PG. The min. a situation presents itself where we could utilize the cap space he's taking up and/or his roster spot to do something to improve the club, I'd like to see him traded, stretched or even waived outright (bought out preferably) in that order. In the meantime, I think he's a passionate, heady player who knows the game--I admire how enthusiastic he is during a huddle, talking to the other players. His teammates could only benefit from that, esp. the young guys, maybe even Fisher too.. I definitely see coaching in this guy's future..

He is going to be a target on d where teams will look to exploit. He has no penetration ability and will rely on 3 point shooting.

much of what you said applies to Carmelo
franco12@ 6/28/2015 8:09 AM
I'd see if you can trade him. I doubt it unless he is moving for a bigger contract/headache - which is OK if we're getting a pick/other/better assets back.
Given that our roster is suddenly resembling a Euro team, I bet the plan is to keep him and use him however you can.
But just as Walt added - is he rehabbing? I mean, we know Anthony is shooting, looking good. Can we get our beloved press to find out?
He is a big chunk of the cap and as such, has to contribute something next year besides good looks in sporty dress on the bench!

He's no Chris Smith
TPercy@ 6/28/2015 9:10 AM
If we can't trade him, keep him as a rotation/reserve player in the squad.

around the 9 minute and 30 second mark Rosalyn Gold Onwude breaks down how Calderon knowledge of the triangle may be useful.
She is a former Standford bball player that played in the triangle.

Calderon is one season removed from starting PG on a Mavs 50 win team. He had a leg injury last year and couldn't move. Lets see him healthy.
My view is a 28mpg guard who plays high IQ ball, gets people in involved, takes care of the ball, plays mistake free hoops and will spread the floor with a great long range shot. He will get plenty of steals also and deflects tons of passes as well (not sure if folks realize that's part of playing defense also).
He's not a great player. He's good when placed in a role where his abilities can shine. I think he starts with Grant unless Galloway can beat one of those guys out. I like Jose as a starter. With good players on the floor he's a stabilizing player. He plays hard and competes. Guy was hurt all year.. it was a bad break. Need to see him with fresh legs. He's a pro.. I expect him to be ready and for us to see his best. If not he's probably breaking down. It happens. When I was 31 my knees kept me out of the outfield and I pitched almost exlusively from then on out. I was still a terror on the basepads because I could run like the wind (or almost as fast as Panos), but I couldn't handle the running load of being a regular outfielder. Hopefully for Jose it was just a bad year and he really just needs time to heal. People here haven't seen the good Jose for the Knicks.
But hey.. don't take my word for it. I know this isn't a big game, small sample size and the competition is mediocre at best... but this is what I mean: (this was a whole 14 months ago.. ish)

Yup...I didn't even think of Pablo as comparison player... and what about Fisher. He was a little bulldog until the day he played his last game.
It was always a criticism I had of David Lee. Pau put some serious effort into building up his body, and his brother is much more physically fit than he originally was.
Got to make concessions to the aging process.
My hope is that he plays well, but that Grant overtakes him before the trade deadline, and some kind of deal is made.

I think Phil and Fish made a point of this to Jose. Can't imagine they didn't press this issue given how fit Fish had always kept himself. Phil said Jose was very apologetic about how things went and I'm assuming he hadn't really come into camp in the best shape possible. If he turns that around and takes it seriously he should have no problem being able to contribute next year.
