Why would he opt of a 12 mill contract, and make the knicks one of his main destinations, and i'm not sure any team is going to pay him 12 mill at 35 yrs old anyway.
He has no ties to NYK, no relatives or buddies on the team, phil wont give him no more the 8 or 9 mill, if that, and we are not a lock to make the playoffs next season, let alone a championship.
So what is driving this guy to even entertain the thought.
he's from nj...i played against him in HS actually!
with that said, hes washed up and DONE. Id only take him for his leadership skills and toughness at a cheap cheap price
He may be on the decline, but he's a legit 2-way player who provides leadership and remains pretty durable. He should continue to age well and offer a nice mentor and transition to Porzingis.
David West is from my hometown of Teaneck, NJ. Would be cool to see him on the Knicks.

still makes no sense, im washed up so I'm going to give up 12 million, why not stay, make your 12, and then receive a bigger offer next season
West is probably looking for at least a 2 year guaranteed deal with a 3rd yr option. or longer. So even if he signs for $8 or $9 million, that is a lot more guaranteed money than $12. And maybe he is unhappy in Indy? Don't really know. Question is will he sign here if we aren't going to be competitive?

there's no reason to believe we wont be competitive next season unless fisher thinks playing 14 guys a night is a good thing.
at his age, as I read somewhere, he can only get a 2 year contract- nothing longer.
Maybe he has made enough money to leave some on the table, but agree that its crazy to give up $12m for an unknown amount.
I might give him $13M over 2 years - but even that I think is too much.
We shouldn't be giving big dollars to anyone over 28.

We will/can be competitive next season.....if a number aof good free agents sign here. Monroe already nixed us because he wanted to go to an already contending team.
So the point is, we may need to line up 2 or 3 very good free agents and get them to agree to sign as a group (with individual contracts). This way they all know that they won't be alone on a losing team and that the team is committed to win.
He's from Teaneck. Maybe he simply wants to return home and play out his remaining career in front of family and friends . Indy's not contending near term and he's had a long NBA career away. He likely has stashed away enuff $ to make personal choices regarding location and planned retirement. West may figure that as a fa in 2016 at age 36 the best offer he may get is the mid level exception of $5.3 so a two year deal near $17 mil would be break even. His game has declined some but he can still play. Id be fine with Knicks giving him 2/$15. Be a nice contributor in many ways over the short run.

....and he might have that already in place with Indy.

He's not the player he once was but to say he's done is an overstatement.

Agree with this.
I would be interested in seeing what kind of deal he wanted.
If he'd be willing to sign for the full MLE over four years - something like 4yrs $24M instead of 2yrs $24M... I think that'd be a really good signing.
Why couldn't Indiana contend with a full year of Paul George back at 100%? Just because Stephenson is gone? What that team needs is for Hibbert to get his act together and they can again be a strong force in the east.
I don't think Indy's championship window has closed (What, because of Lebron? Not because of Chicago!), though the road has gotten tougher.
If we can fit in West on a 1-year deal, again I don't mind that. He's still has too much money on the table for him to become a league min guy overnight. He's never been a #1 option kind of guy... so thrust into that role he's not a good match. As a 2-5 scoring option, sure. He's also a hard fouler.

signing a 35 yr old not name, kareem, duncan, or robert parish to a 4 ry deal is insane

He'd be almost 40 by the time his contract is up! I don't really want him for more than like 2 years, 8 mil but I'm sure he didn't opt out of 12 mil for that. He's at an age where players tend to rapidly decline.

They're getting rid of Hibbert, I'm pretty sure.
Interesting thing about Indy to me - they develop a lot of great young talent... but they often part ways with them pretty early in their careers, at least lately - Artest, Stephenson, Stephen Jackson, Danny Granger, now Hibbert. I feel like there are some others on that list, too.
