Knicks · A Case for Greg Monroe (page 1)

technomaster @ 6/29/2015 3:22 PM
Monroe has often been talked about as the Knicks top prize in free agency. Why and why not?

Pros:
* Young (age 25) 7ft big man coming off a 16/10 year, 50% fg, 75% ft, 2+apg
* Great high post player, excellent passer (among the tops for a center)
* solid rebounder (when was the last time the Knicks had a player that averaged double figure boards?)
* WANTS A SHORT TERM DEAL. reportedly wants 2 years, with a player option for next year. (isn't that ideal for us? That is... unless he stinks and we're stuck with him next year)

Cons:
* With all those pros, are there any reasons why not?
* Not a pure shot blocker
* average defender
* big stats haven't translated to Piston wins

There are very few reason not to. In addition to your Pros, i would also add he's been extremely durable in his young career, an underrated factor for getting value out of a contract. His defensive shortcomings are exaggerated around here. He's not a bad defender, he's just not a good one. But anyone who refers to his defense as horrible, atrocious, etc, are mistaken. He's a guy that offers help now and can also be the starting center the next 8-10 years. Also a great fit in the triangle. He's a must-have for us.

i like him (for the reasons stated above) however lets add some more cons shall we

Cons:
* low impact player
* bad defender (lazy on PNR)
* cant jump higher than 2 inches
* actually 6-11 but plays like 6-9 (no vertical)

with that said, i hope we can sign him

technomaster @ 6/29/2015 3:39 PM
If he effectively wants a 1 year deal, it's a no-brainer. His double digit rebounding numbers (alongside the beastly Drummond)are a pretty good achievement - at least that number offsets the matador defense somewhat.

We're looking for a big body that can contribute on both ends... and while he's not much of a leaper, we need someone to man the middle especially given that we're relying on the high flying KP to be the weakside shot blocker.

He actually turned that around last year. He has become a pretty good Pnr defender. His problem is rim protection but you can be a positional defender a protect the rim too.

eh. he went from awful to mediocre. i think the problem was he had to guard stretch 4s while "man child" drummond guarded 5s. he simply doesnt have the foot speed to do so

Nalod @ 6/29/2015 4:05 PM

For:

Low post game with high post Bargs/Zinger could be effective.
Melo is better than anyone on detroit.
It adds up.

Easy to say no but who has a better alternative to sign here if Gasol, Aldridge and BroPez would not (I dont' expect them to).
I don't care about Bargnani's past as long as he can stay healthy. If so, his skills might be exactly what Phil needs.

fishmike @ 6/29/2015 4:10 PM
He's good. People are kicking because he's not a championship center. I have no idea what that means, but I know Greg Monroe is a walking double double 80 games a year and his lack of defense is way overstated here. He's a center. Play him at PF he's going to look slow and clunky.

I think he and KP are a great fit as most know I started a thread about it

I agree, if phil can get D jordan, affalo, and monroe, I will take back everything i said about phil..that would be considered the best off season this franchise ever had since signing LJ, Houston, and childs

I'll have to go do some research but I believe at one point PnR ball handlers were shooting less than 39% against him.

do the math - that's not remotely possible. Jordan wants $20M, Monroe $16M, Afflalo $12M - that's $48M in cap room. we have $28M

He's getting whatever the max is for his age/years of service. He's absolutely getting the max. I think it's $18-20M for his years of service.

100% DeAndre Jordan. I think the Knicks would actually be a contender for home court in the East with Melo, Jordan and say Afflalo.

He's played 7 years. His max is the same as Melo's: 35% of the team's cap. That would be around $23.5 mil. I do believe multiple teams will offer him that.

Agreed. We saw Tyson was the biggest change and the team lost 20 more games. I'd attribute at least 10 of those 20 to Tyson. And Jordan is better than Tyson. I don't think those changes would make us a contender for home court in the east but I don't think any 2 signings will.

technomaster @ 6/29/2015 5:15 PM
Good question if you had your choice of either. I would do Monroe over Jordan. The main reason is that Jordan is well known for boneheaded plays - and those can hurt when it comes down to close games.

You can say that you can handle a few of those per game if he looks like a 20-20 guy. Phil's Bulls survived with Dennis Rodman's antics, but while a complete nut, he also was a basketball genius.

technomaster @ 6/29/2015 5:16 PM
The ideal scenario for everyone is that Lebron wins a title with Cleveland then demands a max-paying gig with the Knicks. The Knicks will need to clear out room/players/assets to get him. This is the hypothetical reason why we want to keep our cap space flexible.

On the other hand, Monroe hasn't played in very many close games - and there's probably a reason for that.

I tend to be very dubious of big men who put up 20 and 10 on crappy teams. I think you can build a winner around them, but it's tough. And we already have one scoring forward we have to cover for on defense.

I have a hard time building a defensive lineup I can live with that involves both Monroe and Melo. I think you'd need a Willie Cauley Stein type center to cover for them.

technomaster @ 6/29/2015 5:35 PM
I'm skeptical about Cauley-Stein. Some of his predraft interview answers were a bit spacey. I see his upside is DeAndre Jordan/Tyson Chandler. And downside is Javale McGee. realistic output: Robin Lopez.

Scary and expensive downside. Note that it took Chandler a long time to be more than an 8ppg/8rpg type of player. wcs is just learning the game.

For what it's worth, Ewing spent years on sub .500 teams before becoming a perennial contender.
