Yeah, if Fisher doesn't break him. If you watched the post game interview with Fish, he said that Williams wasn't where he was supposed to be on the floor in the system. Read into that what you like but some players just need to play on instinct. They can't be out there thinking their way through the game, they just have to find space, find the ball and react.
Seem like he got a lot of his baskets off of broken plays, but i guess he's more of a instinct player as oppose to set offense. It's up to Fisher to put this guy in the position to utilize his skill set, and not force him to things he's not use to.
It's not broken plays because you're NEVER out of the offense in the Triangle it just keeps cycling. It's designed to keep moving and probing and keeping the defense occupied so that they can't respond to point blank looks at the basket on short jumpers and cuts and slashes to the basket. That's where all the mid range stuff comes from but also the drives to the hoop. As long as your players keep passing and moving, the spacing of the Triangle will create lanes and open spaces on the floor to fill. That's what DWill has to learn and use.
Actually he should be coached up to do things the RIGHT way. So yeah he's gonna be asked to do things BETTER than he's done before. It's a process and so far he looks like he's starting to see the lanes and spots where he can attack. His role is literally to use his quickness to knife into the defense and get to the basket and also flash into the paint. This is what Phil was talking about when he said he needed penetration and that it didn't have to come from a guard.

When a player feeds off of broken plays, it's the results of a fortuitous bounce OR hustle. Let's hope it was the latter in this brief cameo from DWill. He does have a steady foul shot, so his shot should be good from the foul line in. If he can continue to capitalize on his opportunities, he can become that second unit weapon that we need for a solid season.
If this dude gets more comfortable dribbling the ball and can learn to play at least the Odom role, we might end up with a fantastic baller

He's actually always had the skills with the ball, but he hasn't really been given the confidence to push the ball or really handle it as much as layers do in this offense. It's part of what Phil loves about the Triangle is that it encourages everyone to handle the ball a little and over time they usually get better at that skill and making decisions with the ball. This is why I was high on the kid. He's still young and learning, which people sometimes forget. Some were dissing the guy but I felt that they weren't recognizing that he's still young enough to get his game on track. He has TREMENDOUS talent but needs to be coached up and maybe this is the spot for him to do that.
I hope the Odom role only on the court!

Miles away from being Demarre Caroll.

Carroll was pretty much dust until he changed teams for the third time--then his game had a resurgence. This might be the right place for D Will. This is a guy who really had a high talent level in college and showed signs in the pros. I think cutting using screens running taking good shots--he can do that.

I think you're right and I think we're eventually going to regret not having maybe given him more money and getting him locked up longer term on a contract.

Really, when 70% fans thought phil lost his mind adding this under achieving athletic malcontent.
The biggest advantage phil has (if he has a great season) Derrick wants to be here more than anything, and has stated that in almost every interview.
