Maybe not, but it WAS the best strategy for rebuilding the Knicks. Starting to look like that was the plan all along. Next step: Melo will request a trade. We will get at least one 2016 first rounder, additional picks, some vet players. Hopefully, this is already in the works.

So you would of signed Carroll to that contract if you were the Knicks?? That's ridiculous.
What's ridiculous is thinking Carroll would take that contract from us. That contract is basically the new MLE.
What are you talking about?? If we offered him that same contract he would of chosen us.
The Raptors won the division last year. We won 17 games. Why would he choose NY again?
Because it's New York and not Canada and we have Melo and we would still probably get Monroe. The Toronto Raptors....Hahahahahha nobody wants to play with the Raptors unless they're paying you 5 million more a year then you should be getting.

Has Toronto ever signed a big name free agent? They have kept players but I don't ever remember a player choosing to go there as a destination.

New york--what do w do if we strike out--trade melo? Its almost unfair at this point to both Melo and the Knicks if we get stuck taking secondary crp in.
Yeah i think if we strike out and Melo would agree to it then we might as well trade him if we get the right offer. The contracts that are being given out right now are too much for us to even match if we wanna build this team the right way. Milsap 4 years 80 million and Carroll 4 years 60 miilion. We can't give out contracts like that with the position we're in right now. This is getting me very nervous right now.
The Milsap numbers are truly ridiculous if you are looking at today's contracts. I expect that paying these amounts on a 4 year deal is taking into consideration the cap hikes which are looming in the future. Averaged about 13.8/7.8/2.5 in the Cleveland series, and during the year, on a team with no rebounders, he could not crack 8RPG.
He and Carroll are nice players, but not at the amounts they got, IMO.
If we end up deciding to not overpay for players then i'd have no problem at all with just signing some lower level guys to one year contracts and going at it again next summer with a ton of money or trade Melo.

I haven't been in the trade Melo camp but if they don't get at least one big name it seems like that might be the best move for both parties. Really hoping for Monroe/Afflalo now.

Do you want Monroe / Afflalo or a championship within your lifetime?

They sacrificed individual stats to be part of a 60 win team. Teams are paying attention to that these days.
If the Knicks strike out in free agency, its more money to spend next season. Melo will have one year less on his deal, that gives Phil a great deal of flexibility next season to radically remake the roster with some big names available to pursue.
If Porzingis and Grant show something, that will make NY an even more attractive destination. More than likely we arent going to be contending this season, Im fine with Phil not signing players in a desperate attempt to make a splash if the big names turn us down. Porzingis and Grant's development is the most important issue for next season.

I would be more on board with this strategy if we had a draft pick for 2016.
The best course if we strike out is to trade Melo.

Hedu signed there. They also signed Landry Fields away from us lol I think they're forced to overpay or go after Euro free agents because they're not considered a prime destination by many American players.

I wouldn't mind Afflalo if it's for 7/8 million but 12 million is too much for me. I think people are underestimating him though and i think he can definitely still help a team on both ends but again.....the price has to be right. If we could find a way to get both of them and Rolo i'd be very happy with that.

We just drafted a high first round pick for the first time in 30 years, we have a potential franchise player, and what looks to be a solid pick at PG. I don't believe Melo will be traded until next season at the earliest. All that cap room next season and whatever we could get for Melo would make us serious players in free agency IMO, with a better selection of FAs to go after.

Every team in the league will have the cap room to sign one max deal at least. Players want to play for winning teams. If we don't win, they ain't coming.
Only reason Amar'e came was because the Knicks guaranteed the final two years of his deal, which the Suns wouldn't do.

Use the cap space to take on salary for picks- it's not the end of the world. Thats where we went wrong in 2010, by panicking and signing Amar'e
I'm down with that if we lose out on Monroe, West & Affalo. And try to trade Melo

I think Carroll actually benefitted a bit from the Atlanta system.
Milsap's numbers are not that different from what they've always been, and his numbers went down progressively as they move through the playoffs.
I like both of them, but not at the amounts they signed for.

You're thinking in 2014 cap numbers. The good teams are thinking of the cap in 2017 and 2018 and realizing these contracts are complete bargains.

I dont believe that fielding a team with second tier FAs is going to make anyone stampede for the Knicks. Id rather wait and sign short term deals if players like LMA, Draymond Green, arent available. Want to see Porzingis and Grant develop more than anything next season.
Are they keeping DeRozan and play Carroll at the 2?
gunsnewing wrote:Are they keeping DeRozan and play Carroll at the 2?
Carroll was always more of a 3.
Lowry
DeRozan
Carroll
Johnson/Hansbrough
Valanciunas
may not look like much, but they won the division without a legit SF last season. Carroll will improve their D and give them another shooter.
sort of surprised he went there, but Toronto realized they had to overpay. I don't know if the Knicks realize that yet.
