At least Stein is NBA ready and would fill a spot on the floor that has been problematic for years. He is a great defender and a player that makes others better. With him on the roster, the Knicks would have been viable in the east, and would aspire to be in the playoffs. Huge mistake by not drafting this dude; specifically, given that New York is not an attractive spot for free agents
I respectfully disagree. KP is going to be Dirk 2.0. A more athletic Dirk Diggler.
Just stop already.
You have no idea how any player will play this year, next week or tomorrow.
Wowwwwww...
not really worth an argument at this point in time.
Come back in a few years and it might be worth a discussion.
I think if anything this proves why we did the right thing by going for best prospect available instead of trying to draft someone that was more "NBA ready" in year one (which is insane argument as is because KP only played in the 2nd best league in the world).
We need to stop with this "we're only one move" away attitude and patiently build a winner. People forget how bad of a situation this has been due to lack of picks, talent, etc.
Phil is restocking the cupboard.
I wanted WCS and even I now realize that I was wrong about KP. They said he was a project but I feel like I was lied to. KP is not as far away from contributing as they made it sound. KP has great upside and he has NBA skills RIGHT NOW. Also people keep overlooking Jerian. He's most certainly an "NBA Ready" young player. He will be 23 start of the season. I think Phil did a great job with this draft and we have a nice crop of young talent coming into this season.
I was going to start a Man Up Thread - who would you have picked - so we could go back and check it...in like 3-5 years.
I'm happy with who we have - WCS worried me with the medical stuff- my other choice would have been Mudiay.
But, yes, this thread should be locked at this point.

that would be a good thread.
Who wanted Stein
Who wanted Monroe
Who thought that FA want to come here
Who thought that we can pillage other teams that they should give us their star for Calderon
Who were certain that THJ was the next/already Reggie Miller
Who thought that Fisher was a great choice
We are pretty bad GM's and don't really have a clue. That is why we are not GM's and just post on message boards

Hindsight is 20/20
This is why Phil said free agency should be ahead of the draft. If Phil knew his center targets were not available i believe he wouldve drafted stein or traded for a center instead of grant. But the good news is that KP has more potential than stein. And regardless hoe nba ready you think stein is.....keep in mind he wasnt college ready as far as 1 on 1 defense or total offense. At least KP provides offense with similar shot blocking ability. There are still good centers out therr like Kanter who provides the same offensive abilities and rebounding as monroe....without asking for the max.
I think this thread is somewhat overreacting... though this was my thought process behind drafting Stein. Offensive bigs like LaMarcus, Monroe, Dirk, DeMarcus all want to play with guys like this. This is why Sacramento drafted WCS and why PHX signed Tyson Chandler, etc.
I think drafting Stein would have been good.
I respect that the Knicks staff thought Porzingis had the higher ceiling and I am excited to see if he can develop and reach it. But I think it is fair to say the draft pick and the 17 win season did not help our chances in this FA. Long term, we may win. I hope five years from now we look back at Porzingis as the pick that turned around the franchise.
That said, I think it is fair to say that drafting Stein would've made a lot more appealing to free agents.
But bring on the Robin Lopez / Kristaps Porzingis / Carmelo Anthony frontline. Let's see what they can do.
I like our backcourt a whole lot and with Lopez and another 4/5 who can spell KP, I think we'll be in good shape to at least have a fun, competitive squad.

Classic.
Look. Leading up to the draft media and analysts were making it sound like KP was years away from being able to contribute. They said he was 220 lbs and in fact we now know he's 233 lbs. They also undersold his defensive ability as a help defender. Thank God Phil had better information. I wasn't anti KP but I was just going with the prevailing scouting reports that he was much further away from contributing. I never questioned his talent and you can go search my comments on that. The more info we got it's become clear that he's not just a workout wonder but was actually more capable than was reported.

Need I remind you all that we don't have a first round pick the next couple of years. If we stink next year, we will be tanking for another team to get better theft 10 years. Because, we traded our pick for the likes of Bargnani and others.

you feel like you were lied to?
maybe you just assume too many facts?

thanks. We all forgot that we don't have our picks next year

why does that have anything to do with Stein vs KP? Knicks need a high upside young kid more than anything.

The way that analysts were describing KP even up til draft night was that he was a project and years away from being able to contribute. That was a common theme and we didn't really have great intel on him. Don't try and make it seem like I was somehow missing something that was widely stated. No one was talking about KP being 233 lbs verses the 220 they kept listing and they surely kept up the narrative that he was years away.
For all the KP lovers, can any of you please answer the following questions: was KP a dominant player in the Spanish league? If not, what makes you think he will be the great player you are all projecting?
The kid MAY end up to be a steal, but some of you need to stop banking on that kid

can you stop banking on Stein? And no one is banking on KP, we all just love his upside potential.
