Were they in that much better shape starting the free agent process?
Do we still think that Texas does not seem more attractive than NY?
I understand that Jordan was from there but many players are from the NY area and that does not seem to pull them back here.

I think it's because Dallas was more competitive last year and the past ten-fifteen years. I think that consistency would give a player faith that even if they are restocking the roster, they'll do it well.
We have Phil here now, but a lot of the league spent the entire Finals laughing at the Knicks for paving the way for the Cavs to get there. People questioned him all year long.
I think players around the league have questions about Phil, concerns about Dolan, the media and maybe the Triangle. It's gonna be a few years before we build up trust. This year can be a step in the right direction.
I'm definitely going to root for them, especially if they get Lin as they will have all the FA I wanted in NY!

Yea what crzy said: Mavs are on that short list of teams with Finals appearances — 2 with 1 chip — in the last 10 years along with Big 3 Celtics, Phil's Lakers, Duncan's Spurs, LeBron's teams and the Thunder, with current champs the new guys on the block.
I'd imagine Cuban gives a good presentation as well.

This and Chandler Parsons. Parsons seems to be an incredible recruiter. Also, as a second year player he was the team captain on the Rockets.

thats true. Parsons seems to have players that really want to play with him.
I was shocked that he was the team captain for the rockets as a second year player.
Mark Cuban is one of the best owners in the Sport. Rick Carlisle is also one of the best coaches in the league. The team won and played in another championship recently and is always in the playoffs.
Phil, Dolan, Fisher aren't exactly an impressive trio you away. Phil commands respect, but players and agents have to wonder his long term commitment.
Looking at the long term, I did think that playing in NYC would have been better for him from a marketing standpoint and he had the ability to be a strong offensive option featured. They are still worse than OKC, SAS, GS and memphis and it's a pickem with Houston

Only reason? We have first-hand experience on what Jason Kidd can add to your ballclub. Jason Terry is a pretty good 6th man, even if he was a season or two after that award. And respect the power of a fully operational Tyson!

We've actually been remarkably consistent
Quality of life. Most players know NY is a distraction. You have nightlife which is tempting, you have higher taxes which no one wants and you get the NY Media which has a mob mentality. The money isn't the same because of taxes and you get hounded and distracted by other things in NY. Some just want to play basketball and just play basketball because at the end of the day once you make millions who the hell really needs the other distractions.

well of course you need other pieces to contribute but he was so far above anyone else there and without him, they were nothing.

+1 - This enables them to bring in extra players within the salary cap. I love the obsession people have with using intangibles. It is not a coincidence these teams can and continue to stockpile players under the current format.

He'd take home about 2 mil less of that 80 mil if he were in NY. That seems unlikely. You're observing the outcome (NY didn't get free agents) and inferring a highly unlikely cause IMO. Although I doubt money was the issue at all, the cost of living differences between NYC and Dallas are WAY bigger than the tax issues.

To make up for the tax difference, we'd have to pay him 82 mil and it would match the 80 mil in Dallas.
When I go to CNN's cost of living calculators, I find that to match the 80 mil that Dallas offered, we'd have to pay him closer to 200 mil.

I was not inferring anything from players not coming to NY. NY Stinks and is a shytty place to play when they stink.
I honestly think the Media scares off Free Agents.
