Knicks · Summer League Game 3 vs Philly Porzingis vs OK4 (page 17)

Porzingis has been a mixed bag so far for me. Tonight, his length on defense really helped against Okafor but what the hell is he on offense? Biggest enigma out of anyone picked in the first round. Not being critical at all--I'm just beyond curious as to what we have with this kid. What I see is either he's not being aggressive enough demanding the ball and then not aggressive enough once he does get it or he's not getting it enough. Hard to tell--maybe a little of all 3. I really wanna see the kid want the ball more, then shoot the ball more. I wonder where his sweet spots are on the floor. I have trouble figuring out what his identity will be on offense, where he'll be most effective, even what position he should play and what players on the 15-man he'll be effective playing with...What I really liked tonight was his halftime interview -- admitting he was playing poorly and needed to play better was indeed refreshing, I agree with Breeny.
KP is a versatile big. He's a forward now and may eventually grow into a C. He'll score all over the place as he gets stronger. He's got range to 3 and he can hit the mid range jumper. If he was a little stronger he'd be posting up more.
Just watch the highlight video and you can see his game in this offense. His game right now will likely be flashing to the Elbow, PnP, occasional 3pt shot and operating in the Pinch Post where he can face up. What you saw him doing in this game is basically some of the looks he'll get in this offense but with many more touches.

I agree. Galloway is either not recognizing KP or he just does not want to pass the ball to KP. KP had a bunch of post ups against smaller players and they could not get him the ball. This is a problem.

Granted, but I think Krispy also needs to do a little better job demanding the ball too, esp. knowing he's got people asking so many questions about him.

My bad...I just saw it..3:35 4th qt..incidental contact..He was trying to clear space after being rejected..That wasn't malicious..

one of the bigger ifs. what'd you think of the play where he gets stuffed by slim lanky and then decides a shot to the chin with the elbow is in order no less? i think it was a bitch move and showed a lack of character....
If you are referring to OK4 pushing off Grant and the incidental contact hitting Grant in the throat before he even took the shot, then you later try to say OK4 retaliated with his elbow, after being blocked..Then this is showing me your character more so than that of OK4..
I thought he threw his arm out after the block- but it on the offensive foul against KP, I think. It was on the player prior to him asking to come out of the game.I use the free feed on my computer, and the quality is so so, as are my eyes.
He actually plays bully ball on a somewhat regular basis, and has gotten away with some arm swings and elbows on offense, and grabbing people he's guarding. I don't think he wants to waste his energy chasing his man.
OK if you get away with this type of stuff, I suppose, but he is doing it. Kind of like Shaq in this regard.
Karma came back to bite him in the end, though,
Well you are wrong..I watched it again a few times..Grant was between him and Zingis..OK4 tried to clear space before the release and hit Grant with the area above his wrist not his elbow..Again, it was prior to the shot..Zingis blocked the shot and they ran up court..Zero retaliation effort..None..
6:45, bro... Left elbow/arm to the face.
That was a different time period, sorry...3:35 of the 4th..He was clearing space..I doubt that was intentional..He was called for the offensive..

intentional?
Frustration, desperation, perhaps a little embarrassment after the block, and the fact that he was blocked 4 or 5 times, in the game. I don't think he was trying to intentionally hurt KP, but he seems to be willing to throw his elbows around a lot and really drive his butt into you. Should have been called for an offensive foul one time when KP was called for blocking. He also grabs a lot on D, from what I could see.
If a guy like O'Quinn was on the floor when he used the elbow he would have been in OK4's face.
Just glad the ref made the right call...one that OK4's dad surely did not agree with.

I'm confident that KP will make the needed improvements. He's mostly passing the test so far IMO. You can see that he is a fighter and won't back down. He eventually adjusted to OK4's strength and weight and held his position better. He will do better posting up as well with more reps. Once KP gains strength he's gonna be a monster. No one will be able to stop him.

it was intentional and above the chest. it's the game within the game and don't think the refs are going to look past that because they're not. he looks prone to frustration fouls. matter of fact i think porzingis and n'dour figured him out pretty quickly.

i said he was not in shape during the tournament which was weeks and weeks ago. i also noted then that he had no lift on his shot and he would have trouble against nba-level talent. i also questioned his character back during the tournament. today's game did not change those perceptions.
during the period that led up to the draft i said that i wanted towns or winslow and that if we got okafor i hope we could somehow trade down for two picks, like winslow and kaminsky. knicks were never going to draft russell or mudiay... of that i am certain. when we got porzingis i said i liked the pick, having seen his length and athleticism in the workout videos. the game footage i saw showed good court awareness too.
who was your first choice after towns?

I'll rather put my chips on OK4 getting in NBA shape than on KP getting strong enough to play the post or man the interior..I wanted OK4 or another NBA ready player like Winslow..I wasn't big on Towns, he isn't skilled..I wasn't fond of our pick maybe because I'm old school..I don't get the value of a 7 foot jump shooter who is soft on the inside, that includes Kaminsky, and years away from development..He really needs to get stronger..Players are generally who they are..He isn't going to develop into an inside scoring force..He is long and mobile so he will block some shots..He doesn't jump to block shots which is interesting..I think Phil is just winging it but we will see..

The impression that I got from KP's Spanish highlight videos and which made me question whether he could ever be a franchise cornerstone is that he is simply not a one-on-one, create-his-own-shot, gimme-the-damn-ball-and-get-the-hell-outta-my-way player. He needs to play within a team concept for his offense: put backs, rolls to the basket, open jump shots. Without teammates passing him the ball or plays called for him, I just don't know how effective he can be.
So far, SL play only reinforces my view.
holfresh wrote:My impression is that KP is a shooter..There are scorers and there are shooters..Paul Pierce is a scorer and Ray Allen was a shooter..Scorers have that aggressive mentally of give me the ball and you can't stop me...Shooters are judicious and pick their spots..KP will be fine in a roll with the right pieces around him...But I think we underestimate the 82 game season and the adjustment a rookie have to make when it comes to fitness, diet, travel, lack of sleep, etc...It a huge adjustment...When he figures that out, I think you might see what he really is... Asking him to demand the ball or asking players to feed him like he is a go to guy isn't realistic right now...He has never been in that role before and you are asking him to be that, at the highest level in the game...
I know what you mean but I am not sure Ray Allen is the right comparison but in a way hopefully he is. Ray Allen was a scorer and a shooter. Lets not forget that Allen in Milwaukee and Seattle. Allen only became judicious when he got to the end of his career.

he can practice three's in an empty gym all summer- it makes sense to use this summer league time to work on his inside game.

So after all the Fredric Weis and Darko insults the poor Latvian has had to endure; after the draft night booing by people who had not even taken the time to learn about who he was; after all the jokes about his lack of strength and rail thin 195 lbs. body; after all the talk of him being a 5 year project, and how Melo was being betrayed by Jackson, there comes the most devastating criticism of them all...Kris Porzingis...YOU ARE A TEAM PLAYER!
Where is that American "me first" attitude we all crave... where is that swagger that we all love to see? Why oh why, Kris, are you looking to be part of a team and not selfishly promoting yourself? Forget about passing the ball or setting screens, you should be putting up 15-20 shots and making 5 of them like many of your American born counterparts are doing in SL. How will the NBA market you...how will you market yourself and your brand, if you continue to play selflessly, and not selfishly?!
Who do you think you are, Kris Porzingis...some kind of Latvian Bill Russell??
If you actually take a deep breath, have some iced coffee, or some other legal stimulant which may wake you up, and then look again at what you just wrote, perhaps...just perhaps, if you have any sense, you may come to understand why Phil Jackson, and not you, is in charge of creating a competitive team and choosing what kind of players will help the franchise achieve the success it has not had in many many years.
OK4 was blocked 5 times.
Dude showed some super advanced post moves but there is some other troubling signs for the young man, starting with conditioning.

OK4 was good one-on-one for about 3 quarters and I noticed the Knicks doubled him late in the game... when they did was he able to pass out of the double? I didn't think so but only saw the double once.He really tired down the stretch. Not sure if he should lose weight or if he would if he increased his stamina. He is able to move guys around in the post with his size but isn't able to get much lift. He would be a nice problem to have though.OK4 was blocked 5 times.
