Knicks · jahlil Okafor vs Porzingis (page 1)
Porgy played him really tough. Two way potential here .

Have no issue with the time limit.
Guards have to set him up, though, and that is an issue.
Calderon might actually have a good time with Porzingis, like he did with Jason Smith this year.

This is going to be a problem if Grant does not acquire the skill of an entry pass. This is why I think Shved is a must. Lin would have been great but he is at Charlotte.

part of the problem is that KP is too weak to maintain his post position
okafor is soooo freakin skilled. but the dude's chubby and i could see him gettin fat. work ethic's already been questioned.

I respectfully disagree. He holds his position for at least 2 seconds but we could not get him the ball. That should be long enough for our guards to get him the ball.

they should have gotten him the ball more. I bitched about it all over the game thread. however, PART of the problem is that there is usually a very short window since he does not maintain post position.
Also, the coaches did not run any plays for him and pretty much kept him on the other side of the court.
And, for some reason, they don't want to use him as a shooter but want to force him into a traditional big man role.

Actually KP is playing a traditional role for a Big Forward or C in this offense. He's doing all the things he supposed to do, but it's up to his teammates to look for him. They are still not quite there yet in terms of recognizing him as a primary scorer.
Even in this game you saw KP post in the Triangle and in the Pinch Post. You saw him flash to the Elbow for the jumper and into the middle of the paint. He's setting picks and setting up for the Jumper. Basically he's in the flow of the offense as it's designed. Just give it some more time and he's gonna be a primary target.
Seems like the Knicks need to look for him more on offense. His jumper in the high post seems automatic.
Okafor's post moves are insane. He's gonna be ROY. He'll put up 25ppg on that Philly team. To me his basement is DeMarcus Cousins and his ceiling is a Duncan or Hakeem level offensive player.

Calderon had the pick and pop going with Smith...he was not feeding him in the post.
This is what KP was doing in Spain, not unlike the GS stuff run with Green.
They do miss him a lot on the entry passes, especially when he's moving before settling into the post. Hit him on the move and see what he can do from there.

Still have to see what he does with the J. I don't ever see him like Duncan. There is some Hakeem in his movement, though. Hakeem had a a great J from 5ft to 12-15FT, if I remember correctly, as well as those amazing spin moves.
Teams and good defenders always make adjustments, and OK4 will have to do the same thing. Time will tell, but some of those moves he makes are pretty crazy, and hard to stop 1/1.
He has to make the commitment to improve his fitness level, and gets his bodyfat down to 10-12%. Probably needs a little extra heft for his butt banging moves in the post, but he needs some serious work to get into, and maintain his shape.
meloanyk wrote:KP>>>>>>>>OK4. Okafor blitzed him early but KP adjusted as he said at half and winded up challenging every move and seemed to begin to intimidated OK4 late with his height. KP will just get better and better as he fills out andcan impact in more ways. OK4 uses his rump extremely well and has all the post moves but he has little lift, still dont understand how one can justlower shoulder and bang into chest of defender holding ground and get defensive fouls called. Easily could have ben called offensives imo. . Knicks gotta a get more shots for KP as 5 is not enuff given his skills
I agree. KP did a great job after he realized how much effort he'd have to put into absorbing OK4's back down moves. He adjusted just fine and really gave OK4 all kinds of trouble. Imagine if KP was already stronger? Once KP gets his strength up he's gonna be a real problem for teams.
If they gave KP more shots he'd get into a real rhythm and put up some nice shooting nights. I really look forward to seeing that down the line. He's got some real potential.

He's got even more length than Mchale and could b an unstoppable force from that mid range shot( the ones he hit today) down to learning the footwork associated with great post play. He is NOT Dirk Nowitski who was more agile and nimble. The 3s I've seen kp take were ghastly they were forced low % heaves. I don't mind him taking one in a nice rhythm buy again his bread and butter will be served in the mid range to post. Also would lol to see some aggression attacking th basket for a few dunks. We didn't draft a 7-3 guy to make himself small we want him to use bis length and advantage where it counts in the mid range to post. I would rather see a few dunks next game
Briggs- none of those 3s came within the flow of the offense, and you already know. They were shots taken by a young kid who wants to show folks what he can do, but is not being set up well.
Our guards have failed to get him the ball in a good position, for the most part. I would prefer that he take mid-range shots and do some work in the post, but it would help if our guards set him up. He is always moving, but at some point, a player will get frustrated if his movement is not rewarded. He was ahead on a break the other day and Galloway completely missed him
He and Grant should be unstoppable with those pick and pop setups. He's also shown that he is a much better passer than his stats indicated...probably because he was playing a stretch 4 all the time.
He's just starting. He should be over 240 lbs come training camp, and hopefully he watches some McHale vids to get an idea of what he can do.

Mchale was only 6-10 imagine what kp could do using the up and under in this league-- he'd score 30 a night and shoot 57%+ He doesn't need the strength of superman he just needs the knowledge and the post skills. Why would we ever want kp playing more than 12 feet from the basket?

U drafted him for his shooting skills not his post up skills..He never showed what you are asking him to do...

i saw an extremely smooth and quick release and no effort at all shooting 5-6 ft behind the 3pt line. There are lineups where he will be able to explore his long range shot. Play Melo at 4 Rolo at 5 and Zinger at the 3. No 3 can even intimidate his shot if he gets a good pass because hes so long and release is so quick.
I agree with McHale route, though I'd call it the KG route, who kind of took McHale's frame and style to the next level. I see the Dirk in him and disagree on the agility. Havent seen him make the moves in a Knick Uni, but some of his clips from Europe show him taking his man off the dribble and dunking.

Okafor:
I also think he is extremely skilled, but on the offensive end. His conditioning will probably come around but he is not going to be able to bully NBA centers around imo, and will have to develop other parts of his offensive game. Which, I think he will. The problems:
Defense - He is below average, especially for his size.
Free Throw shooting - Do you really want to throw it down low to him and have Hack a Shack? (Even if they change the "rule" lol.)
Kristaps on the other hand is honestly a marvel, a two way player who can score from outside, midrange (did you guys notice this?) and up close (needs to gain strength.)
He can pass, partly due to his size (see's the floor incredibly and has quick reactions) and can defend extremely well. Once his body fills out, look out.
No way do I pick Towns over this guy. Right now you can argue KP is the #1 pick and if the draft was redone, he is not there for us to pick.
Edit - just found this: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basket...
Okafor complimented Porzingis, saying that the 19-year-old "looks like he can do everything." Porzingis has impressed opponents and scouts in his three games here.
Two NBA general managers, who did not want to be identified, said they would have selected Porzingis first overall.
and http://nypost.com/2015/07/14/porzingis-r...
The Sixers went with the safer choice in Okafor. Ironically, Knicks general manager Steve Mills revealed on MSG Network that Clarence Gaines, Phil Jackson’s top advisor, graded Porzingis as the No. 1 pick in the draft over Okafor and Karl-Anthony Towns.
