Did we draft Early last year to eventually replace Melo once we trade him?

Early's only replacing Melo if marketing decides to add "CLE" to all the surplus Anthony jerseys on hand.

don't know about that but now that we have the future Melo in Derrick Williams ...
It's just strange that with all our needs we drafted a back up for Melo.
Maybe they knew Melo's health was going to be an issue and that Clay would fill in when Melo was to sit out games. Then again I hope the Knicks didn't know about Melo's health because then why did Dolan give him $124mik and why didn't he have knee surgery last offseason
I think Early was a BPA pick - several mocks had him late first. I think ESPN among others called him a steal when we took him.
Yea maybe but the Knicks scouts over the last few years have been great at targeting unknown draftees late in the draft. Wasn't Gobert available when we picked Early? There is always a diamond in the rough at a position of need in the draft. The Knicks have been pretty good at finding them

The coaching staff has seemed to have gotten through to him: play D, play consistent and with energy and Early has taken it to heart. Rotation guy for sure if he can keep it up. Doesn't seem to have the highest IQ but if he can focus on being scrappy and take what's given to him, he'll do quite nicely.
why do you think he does not have a high IQ?
the easiest, most glaring example: shot went up for the Knicks and I think Ndour did his best Tyson impression and batted it out to the perimeter for a rebound, ball went too far and over half court line and Early didn't know you could go into backcourt to retrieve ball, caused a turnover instead of just scooping up ball. Ndour and perhaps Grant went over to him after play to remind him of the rule.
I remember that play though mistakes happen especially with young guys. He had one really sweet pass to NDour in OT.
I think that his IQ is good and he just needs experience.
Even last season when he was bad, he was one of the only players who seemed to move the ball smartly.
Early been in the league for a year, Ndour and Grant have not and knew the rule. I'll watch more closely and point out some other stuff about Early and his IQ.
Mostly I really really really like what I have seen from Early. The fact that he has accepted his role of a 3 & D type of guy indicates to me that his focus about his role is locked in and he can concentrate on his strengths within a limited scope, telling for a young player who came off a disappointing year. It's obvious that he has taken the time off after the season to improve both his role and his body, something that I have not seem from either Gallo or Wear (Ledo may have taken strides but either hasn't been able to put it together or is still a ways away and Antetokounmpo has a long way to go).
I figure that his name never ever came up late last season for a 10 day contract, and i totally see why. He's just a ball of out of control energy.
I think early looks more comfortable.
What scares me the most is these guys playing with melo, he's such a dynamic scorer that his teammates get caught up watching him, instead of playing off him. That goes for everyone except billups and kidd.

Hobert was available when the Knicks picked Hardaway. That was a weird pick. The Knicks already had Shumpert and JR.

Hes done a lot of nice things and should be a nice back up to Carmelo at 3. Also noticed how much L galloway is playing? I wonder why they are giving him +30 minutes? Must have smaller faith in ledo than first thought?
I wouldn't say Early is being over looked at all. You need to remember that this is summer league and Early played like this when he was sent down to the D-League last year for a few games but when plays with the big boys he shows none of what he does with the D-League kids. I'm rooting for him just like i do with anyone that's on the Knicks and love what i see when he's playing with the kids in SL and DL but he needs to show something in the NBA as well.

I don't think they had re-signed JR yet. Re-signing JR made the THJ pick even worse!

Ok you're seriously reaching right now with this comment. So you think that we drafted Melo's replacement in the 2nd round of the draft??
Researched th r full game and early defense was very good. One of the commentators said that Fisher said he would earn minutes by playing better defense, so kudos to him. I want to see him play that level of intensity every time.

Early's pick was part of the Tyson trade. If he turns out good then phil deserves credit for that deal.
idk why anyone would think he could be Melo's replacement

that's just guns spazzing out again lol
from what he has shown in summer league i am not a fan. i'd like to see him him make plays for others in the halfcourt. seems like his entire game is going one on one and scoring in transition. defense doesn't look like much either. for all his energy his floor impact is negligible. same with ledo.
n'dour, however, is another story.

Early has made some really good passes this summer league.
I think early takes a big step this year. Remember he was projected to be a first rounder in the draft but fell because he was older

I'm just amazed at how off you have been in you recaps regarding players..Once you said Early wasn't efficient when he went 6-9..He doesn't make plays for others yet he is second in assist on the team behind Grant..He had a 9 rebound game the game prior..His defense doesn't look like much but it what the Knick commentators are raving about...He leads the team in scoring and the Knicks have won every game..His impact is negligible??? Bro are you watching these games or just pulling shiit out your, you know what???

Yeah, I can see Williams being as good as Melo. We're talking Melo at 50 right.

you lack perspective and don't see things outside the context once again....
i said i do not see an efficient player out there when it comes to the triangle. have you see much triangle in sl? he'll be fine in a bench role outside of the triangle. i am saying when i see him play i see a lot of energy but it isn't a team-oriented energy, meaning when it comes to working his game through the triangle offense i just don't see it. he's also taking too many shots at the expense of trying to be a playmaker.
as always i hope to be proven wrong but come the regular season please remember this exchange.
