Knicks · Porzingis Vs. Okafor/Towns and Grants Vs. Russell/Mudiay - Summer Stats (page 1)

earthmansurfer @ 7/19/2015 7:53 AM
I found the stats below on reddit, credit given to the OP below - my brief comments before the stats. Note, the OP's stats are based on PER36.

Porzingis - You can see KP held his own and excelled in some areas. He played at the 5 so we couldn't really see what he will look like at the 4, but...
I think it is a bit shocking that KP appears the much better shot blocker than Towns, thus far anyway. And the way he intimidated on so many drives was a thing of beauty.
The rebounding has to come up, no shock there. Best of the bunch on TO's, basically tied on points, up there with FT%, assists and tops on steals. Beautiful shot.

Grant - really did Shine leading the team. What an incredible passer. Best passer we have drafted since Jackson (I say he is better than Strickland at the same stage.)
He was the run away leader here in Blocked Shots, steals, FG%, 3P%, FT% and up there with Mudiay on assists. I think he is going to be much better than many anticipate.

Another nice summary by the prior OP

Begs the conclusion that we should have gotten WCS, no?

Grant played very well - definitely much better than Mudiay. However, he's 3 years ahead of Mudiay. I'm sure the Nuggets are hoping Mudiay will be an NBA all-star who could come in and drop 30 points with one eye closed against summer league players 3 years from now. Grant did still play well and I'm a bit shocked we were able to get him for just TH Jr.

Porzingis played OK. The fouls and rebounding are worrisome but the scoring and shot-blocking were nice. For sake of thoroughness, the author should include Miles Turner's per 36 stats too. That's only 3 summer league games but the #s are shocking.

Points Rbs Blks FG%

how soon before teams start Hack-a-Okaforing? guy was bad at FT in college, shot 40% in Summer League. you can't be a low post threat if teams are just going to foul you and put you on the line.

Based on 5 summer league games? Can one even make such a conclusion.

Bottom line, A good summer league stat line is better than a bad one. Thats all.

Grant has the physical tools and court vision to be able to put up these numbers. He doesn't need to be a superstar or better then Mudiay etc. He just needs to be a draft pick that produces and sticks with quality production. Everything after that is icing.
newyorknewyork @ 7/19/2015 10:35 AM
And who is Scott Machado?
yellowboy90 @ 7/19/2015 11:01 AM
Can anyone calculate N'dour per 36 #s?

Great find. Thanks for posting this. Grant and Porzingis are proving to be as good or better than every other top pick in the draft to this point. Porzingis has been an after thought at times in the offense and he still had an impact. Looking forward to watching Porzingis get to the point where he can show all the facets of his game.

What impresses me about Grant the most is his ability to operate in very little space. Jerian is able to thread the needle with tough passes in traffic, on a moment's notice. He can also find really tough angles in his shot, or his drive to the rim. I dont know what his ceiling will turn out to be, but he has shown enough to demonstrate that he could be our PG for quite some time.

Yeah, I thought ch-dev did a nice job on the stats and it was useful. Definitely share worthy.

It is way too soon to say what we have but we sure have a good idea. KP has all the tools to be a first of his kind, kind of player. He is that talented. And that talent is in his game and also in his mind (Great IQ). Throw on top of that he is a basketball junky and his brother is a bit of his personal trainer. This kid wants to be a star and has the makeup.

The thing about Jerian, in part why he was under the radar (if #19 for a Senior is under the radar), is that, as you said, the kid can thread the needle and pass like the best of them in college. I think we look at Seniors as having reached their peak and overlook how young they are and how much they can improve. Like KP, Jerian has basketball in his blood, even more-so as we all know.
That said, if Jerians passing gets any better, and it will of course, the kid is going to be an incredible PG. He plays pretty good defense and just like KP, he wants to get better.

When you look at the stat comparison it really tells a lot. For KP, even playing out of position, just look at his defense and offensive efficiency. I can't wait to see him at the 4. For Jerian, the kid is solid + across the board against all the great college PG's. I think he was the #5 player, based on his stats and affect on the best offense in college BBall, for a few publications.
We got 2 guys that are just made for the Triangle...

Absolutely LOVE the Jerian Grant pick. I was hoping Phil would add another pick in the 1st rd and Jerian was an excellent pick. He's closer to what he's going to be than Russell and Mudiay who are younger and still have to prove what they're going to be and that is an important factor. We don't KNOW for sure that Mudiay will ever improve his shooting. We don't KNOW for sure that Russell will become the Steph 2.0 that he seems to have the talent to be. Jerian is less about potential and more of a known quantity. We don't have to guess if Jerian has the goods.

KP we knew was behind the curve in terms of his physical development. I think that's he's only real weakness. Once he gets stronger I think a lot more of his game falls into place. He has everything he needs to eventually become a dominant player. It's all about hard work and dedication from here on. I like his chances given his personality and desire to be great. That's what he's gonna need to make the needed progress.

why? And this goes for Grant as well... he should play like an elite player in summer league because of his age and experience. Same with WCS. Takes nothing away from them, they played well, but there should be a higher level of expectation I think. All the other guys are 19ish and are one year removed from high school. Grant is 4 years removed, and WCS is 3 years removed. They are older, more mature, more experienced and their games are more refined. So I think Grant and WCS both showed why older players are indeed "more NBA ready" as they both demonstrated they could step into a new situation and play impact ball.

Remember when the Yankees had Kevin Maas, and all he could do is beat the living hell out of the ball, well when he could make real contact. And that's it, that's all he could do.

That's Machado with passing the basketball. The guy is a human clinic while passing the basketball. But the rest of his game is a mess. The Trail Blazers had a guy, Sabonis, who would have crushed the NBA if he came to the NBA in his prime. Machado is that kind of raw passer, just instinctive and always seems to make the correct decision at the right time. With a full career in the NBA, Sabonis would have been the best passing big man IMHO in NBA history.

Machado was built to be a Harlem Globetrotter.

TheGame @ 7/19/2015 5:13 PM
Great article. Grant and KP really measure up. This Knicks team is going to look very attractive to FAs next summer.

THink about this. With the 4th pick and THjr, the Knicks got the second best center/PF and maybe the best point guard in the draft.

Machado's problem was that he was short and not particularly athletic. Think Omar Cook with a better J, but less athleticism. Machado was just an OK outside shooter, so his inability to score in the paint really hindered him.

I think we're missing something if we talk about our guys in isolation. I think Phil is building a team where the sum is greater than the parts.

I'm pleased our guys did well. But I am not under the delusion that they are better than others we might have drafted.

For the most part he had the same philosophy in mind with his FA signings.
